The Know Show: Rise of the Machines. Toronto's only SCIENCE-themed comedy variety show, The Know Show, will be featuring a special guest this month—grouse! Jenna LeBlanc and Maddox Campbell host an evening of science-based sketch comedy, an interview with me, and improv somehow based on the interview with me. Proposed: mefites in Sault Saint Marie?
Okay it's a long shot, but are there any mefites in Sault Ste Marie, either in Michigan or in Ontario? My mefite spouse and junior mini-mefites will be in town between July 23 and August 2 or so and I think it'd be cool to raise a glass to Mefi on this, its 20th. Anyone interested?

Since a few people expressed interest who couldn't make it last time, trivia is on again this Tuesday at Folly Brewpub. Trivia starts at 7pm, but I'm generally there from 6:30. Last time we had a resounding win, so we need to try to retain our crown. Very low stakes, only a round of beer, but always fun.

Etc: Evolutionary Analysis book club
A biology book club I'm part of in Toronto is going to be starting Freeman and Herron's Evolutionary Analysis. We read a chapter of a textbook a month (more or less), and answer the end-of-chapter questions. We also try to find a paper related to the chapter to discuss. Everyone is welcome; when we did Albert's Molecular Biology of the Cell, we had everyone from people who had zero biology background to biology Ph.D.s attend. Sometimes we stick to the subject of the chapter, and sometimes the discussion is wide-ranging. It's held at Toronto's Hacklab, which strives to be an inclusive and welcoming space. [more inside]
