Pierogies and fun times

Fri August 25 at 6:30 PM, House of Targ
1077 Bank St, Ottawa, ON K1S, Canada (Map & Directions)
Let's aim for Friday at 6:30 pm. Once it gets too noisy as the punk show looms, we'll shift to another nearby location (and update this thread).

It's been over a year since our last meet up. It was great fun so let's do it again, but this time with pierogies, arcade, and more* at House of Targ.
*I've never been to House of Targ. Can we bring boardgames? (I won't bring any.)

My daughter really thrills to their Doctor Who pinball, and a dear friend lives nearby [which means that I, a rural-ish person -- I am an Ottawan but currently living in the western boonies, would actually be able to drink beer and not have to worry about driving home, a thing that nearly never lines up] so I might actually be able to make this. Late in the day, later on in the month, on a Friday or Sunday would be my pick...

I would be interested in that date and time range, similar to kmennie. I've never been to House of Targ but my family goes all the time and they love it.

Depending on the actual day and time, I could probably make it. That week is also Pride week. But I have been to House of Targ and the Pierogies are amazing. Didn't notice if you could bring board games though. I don't recall a lot of table space, however.

I'm probably in if it doesn't clash with anything. My spouse may also be interested.

OMG! I just moved to Ottawa and was thinking of calling a meetup to see if there were active Mefites here, so I'm very excited about this.

Also, I recently made a post about the awesome Ottawa couple that are traveling around visiting all the Heritage Minute locations and one of them is a Mefite so we should stalk them and force them to ... I mean ... MeMail them and see if they would like to come to the meetup.

Oh hey! I remember you from a Toronto meetup.

*waves*

We should get together at a meetup and talk about how much better Ottawa is than Toronto. And then in a year or so, about how much better we had it in Toronto.

Ok, let's try the Friday?

suetanvil, there's a club for displaced Torontonians in Ottawa? My people! I'm in.

Welcome, jacquilynne! I moved here two years ago and I'm still honeymooning with Ottawa. It's a lovely place filled with so many incredibly nice people.

Winters are dreadful though.

Hey, I'm good pals with the Heritage Minutes couple! Will point them to this post!

Aw man, we can't make it! We're off doing non-Heritage Minute things that weekend.

I'm still in Ottawa then and can probably make Aug 25 (anything in the 23-27 range is possible for me), +1. House of Targ is great. I've never seen anyone bring board games there, but there are tons of games already there (which does make board games seem maybe not ok? Unfortunately I guess monopolatte closed).

FYI there is a show there on Aug 25, doors at 9, show at 10 -- so cover will probably apply at 9 or so. That probably suggests having the meetup on the early side?

Thanks advil. I should have checked the calendar first. Does anyone have a preference for Friday vs Sunday? Looks like Sunday doesn't have a show, per se, but a DJ spinning around 9 and $5 cover which includes free game play. Or would an earlier time on Friday work? Say, 6pm? I defer to y'all.

Could someone please briefly school me on the usual flavour of NCR MeFi meetups? For ten years I have been living in Pakenham -- having bounced off Metcalfe St to do so (?!? -- I question this too at times) -- alone with a kid, so have never made it to one, even though I have optimistically ticked "maybe?" a few times...

Are ye all family folk with prestigious careers who bounce after a pint and nosh? Or ye be drunkards and closing down the place? Previously mentioned dear friend has my back on sober child care and a place nearby for me and the littlest MeFite to spend the night, so...so this factors in on my vote for a Friday vs Sunday. (I don't get out as much as I should.)

(On the off chance there's someone here livin' up the Valley way, eh, I can drive you into the city. Return trip might be two days later. But, now that we have Uber, it's only $40 from Stittsville to Pock-in-'em...)

If the band is loud, and I expect it will be, I vote that we pack up and depart for Quinn's at that point...

I've only been to one in Ottawa, I wouldn't really describe it as drunkards closing down a place -- we played board games in a board game cafe. But I don't think it ended super early either, and it was a board games cafe that served alcohol.

It's a good point that there's a couple of other pubs right near house of targ, quinn's and also an ok barley mow if there's a lot of us. (Also Stella Luna.)

(I'd prefer friday for myself, I'm leaving early monday morning so I wouldn't stay long on sunday. But $5 for free play might actually be a good deal, pinball machines are pricy.)

I probably can't arrive either day until much before 8:30, I'll be busing in from Orleans. My preference would be for Friday; I have family potentially swooping in for a visit later in the weekend. But, I have a feeling that a band billing itself as "1000% POWER-TRASH" is going to make for much conversational room.

I have never been to a meet-up and am also curious what they're like.

I may have inlaws visiting that weekend and they may be expecting me to drive them to Montreal on Friday so my ability to make it is up in the air right now. If that happens, I may be able to make it back for Sunday night but that seems unlikely as well.

I think I am going to run to Toronto that weekend. I can work with either Friday or Sunday, just need to know which! I don't think live music is conducive to a meetup, though, so my vote is probably for Sunday.
posted by jacquilynne at 6:01 PM on August 17, 2017

hmm, I will definitely be in town that weekend, and hope to see you all there.

This sounds good! I will try to make it. (I also vote to leave if a show starts up.)

(There's quite a few of us displaced Torontonians in town!)

Stella Luna on a summery Friday night? I'd worry the queue would stretch to the front door of House of Targ.

heatherlogan and I will probably show the flag.

Do we have a reservation, or is someone bringing a sign?
posted by jacquilynne at 8:47 AM on August 25, 2017

I'll bring a "Mefi" sign. I called to make a reservation, but they don't open until 5pm. Will do then, under the name "Mefi". See you all soon.
posted by mayurasana at 10:21 AM on August 25, 2017

Last minute change of plans; I can't make it. Sorry for being a false "attending" for reservation numbers!

I won't be there tonight. Have fun!

We're heading to Stella Luna now, just a few steps south of House of Targ.

Thanks for this! I had a really great time, and was excited to meet some local Mefites.

Unfortunately, I was not able to make it due to familial obligations. I would really like this sort of thing to continue, though.
posted by suetanvil at 2:11 PM on August 28, 2017

I had a great time too!

Many who came out also expressed interest in meeting more often (our last one was two years ago!) I'll aim to propose monthly meetups.
