Brooklyn Backyard Cookout/Potuck Saturday Sept. 14

Edit: It's happening! We've got the date and time chosen I'll provide burgers and chicken and some sides (including a vegan gf thai rice noodle salad), maybe some sausages with peppers and onions if we get enough people coming. I'll have a base level of beer and wine and NA beverages. Chime in with whatever you'd like to bring (and no ones gonna shun store bought anything here). [more inside]

Lesbian potluck!

Looking for new lesbian friends in SF! I’d like to set up a recurring small group to have meals together and hopefully form a friend group. Not looking for dates or romance. First iteration June 8 at Dolores Park (perhaps near the playground) at 2pm. Bring a picnic blanket or towel in case we can’t find a table, and bring something that you want to eat, with a little extra to share if you are able. [more inside]

DC Ice Cream Social Redux

The 2016 Ice Cream Social/Potluck at Crispus Attucks Park was a lot of fun, so how about a repeat? Does July 7, 8 or 22 work for people? Or if July's too hot, later in August or early September?

UPDATE: August 5th looks like the best date. Looking forward to trying everybody's efforts. At least one attendee is lactose-intolerant, so I'm making the Vegan Chipotle Chocolate again.

Potluck III: Luck of the Pot

From Wikipedia: To the Irish, a potluck was a meal with no particular menu. Everyone participating brought a dish for all to share. The term comes from a time when groups of Irish women would gather together and cook dinner. They only had one pot so they cooked the meal together with whatever ingredients they happened to have that day.[citation needed] [more inside]

Potluck in the Great Outdoors

Update: Confirmed, for Saturday, September 20th, between 1 and 2 p.m. Olympia Shelter, in North Park. Many thanks to librarianamy! Per this thread, there's been some promising talk of holding a potluck in a county park while the weather's still amenable. Please offer any suggestions! [more inside]

Cherry Blossom Picnic

Come to the gardens in Yonkers where I work and have a potluck picnic under the cherry trees.
As an outside event that depends heavily on weather and when the trees blossom, the date for this event is likely to change.
So definitely check here before heading out the door! I'm putting the day down as the 18th even though I may have to sneak away at 2pm to give an official tour of the place. [more inside]

Distilled Crazy After All These Years - Whisky/Whiskey Tasting Redux

Three years after our last (very successful) whisky-centric meetup/potluck, we're doing another one at my house! Bring a bottle of something you either like, or haven't tried but are curious about; we take little tastes of each, we compare and contrast, we all go home a little happier, wiser, and tipsier. Obviously, good liquor can be pricy, so if you can't afford an expensive (or even mid-priced) bottle that doesn't mean you aren't welcome! Booze is appreciated, and bringing a bit of food is encouraged, but come one come all. See below for food-pairing suggestions, also please be sure to update the spreadsheet with what food and drink you plan to bring. [more inside]

Looks like the 50th anniversary of Dr. Who is at 11:50 a.m. on Saturday, November 23 for us on the west coast. This could be an entertaining start to a potluck/game day. Or maybe some soapmaking for holiday gifts. Whatever strikes the fancy of whoever turns up. [more inside]

Game Night at Greg_Ace's

Since we haven't done a Game Night in a while, I thought I'd host one. Rather that try to create a "meal", I thought it might be better to bring snacky-type stuff (along with beverages), so we can focus on games instead of food.

Criterion Thursday: Do The Right Thing

This week: Spike Lee's DO THE RIGHT THING ("The hottest day of the year explodes on-screen in this vibrant look at a day in the life of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. Featuring a stellar ensemble cast."). Because it's on a weekday, we're starting a little later: food at 7, movie at 8. [more inside]

Criterion Sundays: Dodes’ka-den

Due to some travel we each have planned in the next few weeks, we're taking a two-weekend break from Criterion Sunday - but not to worry! Criterion Sundays: French Cancan

This week's film: Jean Renoir's FRENCH CANCAN ("a Technicolor tour de force by a master of modern cinema"). Trailer. Charles Silver, curator of film at MoMA: "If someone asked me to recommend two or three essential or seminal Chaplin or Ford films, I would be less hesitant than I would be with Renoir, whose thoughts and feelings seem universal, and whose films seem to encompass virtually all that is Cinema—and life itself." Criterion Sundays: Smiles of a Summer Night

This week's film: Ingmar Bergman's SMILES OF A SUMMER NIGHT. Pauline Kael: "Late in 1955, Ingmar Bergman made a nearly perfect work—the exquisite carnal comedy Smiles of a Summer Night. It was the distillation of elements he had worked with for several years... The film is bathed in beauty, removed from the banalities of short skirts and modern-day streets and shops, and removed in time, it draws us closer." Roger Ebert's Great Movie review. An interview with Bergman about the film. [more inside]

Criterion Sundays: Mr. Arkadin

This week's film: Orson Welles' MR. ARKADIN: The Comprehensive Version. Time Out says: "Long unavailable for theatrical screening... Mr Arkadin assumed an equivalent patina of myth and legend to that cultivated by its central character.... Flamboyantly melodramatic, it's a playfully egocentric display of a magician's perverse revelation of his own trickery."

We are back to our regular schedule this week. Potluck dinner from 6pm, movie starts at 7 en punto. [more inside]

PDX "seasonal holiday of your choice" potluck dinner

Open invitation to any Portland Mefites who for whatever reason aren't planning to spend the holiday otherwise occupied visiting or being visited by relatives, and are interested in getting together during the weekend of Dec. 22nd - or perhaps 29th? - for a relaxed and calorie-filled nondenominational dinner. I'd be willing to host, as well as roast or smoke meat of some sort. People could bring side-dishes / desserts / drinks - you know, the usual. We can toast the season, have some fun, and avoid sitting home alone in the dark drinking box wine and feeling maudlin and sorry for ourselves! Yay! [more inside]

PDX harvest fest/potluck

I know several of us grow vegetable gardens. Is there any interest in an autumnal harvest-themed food meetup? Not sure what the best month would be; wouldn't necessarily have to be at the very end of autumn. Take some foodstuffs you've grown and either bring it raw or as (part of) a dish of some kind.

Whiskey Tasting at Greg_Ace's house

At the last Portland meetup, the subject of a scotch tasting came up. The backstory is long and unnecessary, but the upshot is that we thought it sounded like a hoot and I'm willing to host it at my house in SE Portland (4414 SE Center St., near SE 42nd and Powell). NOTE: The original plan of "five or six different types of scotch" has mutated into "whiskey" in general, to include Irish whiskey and bourbon. [more inside]

Thanksgiving dinner potluck for PDX "orphans"

I figure since I consider Thanksgiving to be a great excuse for me to go nuts cooking anyway, I'd see if there are any local Mefites who are - like me - at loose ends family-wise and have no other plans for Turkey Day. My apartment can probably accommodate about 8 people comfortably, but if the response is greater than that and someone has the means (and willingness) to host a larger gathering, that's cool too. We can figure out the exact logistics and time but what I had in mind was an afternoon+early evening potluck sort of thing.
