PDX MeFi music night - CANCELLED
posted December 3, 2012 11:06 AM   RSS

UPDATE: Event cancelled due to lack of interest.
At the last Game Night meetup someone told me they were sorry they missed the music night a few months ago, and expressed an interest in attending the next one. I said I'd see if there was any interest in another music event. So...is there? Perhaps sometime in January?

For those who missed the last one: Music Night is a combination of half-ass jam and potluck. Whoever feels like lugging any sort of musical or percussion instrument over does so (but not required; just hanging out is fine too), and depending on participant consensus and ability we have a VERY informal jam session playing something vaguely music-like. In between "performances" we sip and nibble and socialize. No big whoop.

Also, I'm willing to host unless someone else wants to.

There was a music night a few months ago?!

Anyway I'd be interested in such a thing.

You were there, dude. In body, at least, if not in mind.

Alas, as usual, there is always the problem of finding an appropriate venue.

As before I can offer my basement Rumpus Room, if that's what works out best for everyone.

Let's have it at mimo's house.

Whoa, I think I heard her shriek of refusal from here...

That was me, and I am (interested in attending the next one), but hosting wouldn't really be possible because of limited space...and certainly not if things get as epic as game night. Because that was epic.

Yeah, I am not opposed in theory, but I live in a small house without a padded room.

And heaven knows, we could definitely use one of those for this group!

This sounds very interesting, though I don't play anything well enough to jam. I'd be a happy audience member if I can make it.

I want to stress again that this is more about FUN than displaying highly-accomplished musicianship. Think of it as MeFi Karaoke Night, strictly amateur, Keep PDX Weird time. Don't be shy. I've got a few things to shake and clack together if you don't play an instrument, as well as a keyboard and a small amp (if we do this at my house). Everybody bring your Fisher-Price xylophones and guitars and kazoos and ukes and Vibra-Slaps and recorders and tambourines and fiddles and bagpipes and drum sets and nose-flutes and birdcalls and croaky voices and, and, I dunno, gongs and kalimbas and stuff (And perhaps some liquid courage to help you use them in front of others, who will clap and cheer enthusiastically...or at least enough to clap and cheer enthusiastically for others). NO VUVUZELAS. We can start with "Mary Had a Little Lamb" and "Hot Cross Buns" - bypassing "Kumbaya", if I have any say in the matter - and work our way up as far as the mood takes us.

End of January sometime?

That's why god invented the tambourine. And the udu (as my extremely non-musical self learned at a meetup at Lutoslawski's a couple years ago).

End of January sometime?

That would be January 19th or 26th (or February 2, if we bleed over into the next month). Any preferences?

If anyone is giving this any more thought, looks like I'll be out of town on the 26th.

Jan. 19th, then? Are enough people still interested that it's worth confirming the date?

(Alternatively, we could do a bowling meetup instead)
