Whiskey Tasting at Greg_Ace's house

Sat May 21 at 6:00 PM, Greg_Ace's house
4414 SE Center St, Portland, OR, USA (Map & Directions)
At the last Portland meetup, the subject of a scotch tasting came up. The backstory is long and unnecessary, but the upshot is that we thought it sounded like a hoot and I'm willing to host it at my house in SE Portland (4414 SE Center St., near SE 42nd and Powell). NOTE: The original plan of "five or six different types of scotch" has mutated into "whiskey" in general, to include Irish whiskey and bourbon.
UPDATE: mrzarquon has created a spreadsheet of who's bringing what, whiskey- and food-wise.

There's plenty of room indoors and out (I have a covered patio), and there's easy access by bus - 9, 17, and 75 all have stops within 4-6 blocks; 14 is 9 blocks away - or car (or griffon). Thanks to Lutoslawski, who has volunteered to bring some extra folding chairs so there's plenty of places to sit.

- We can set up "anonymous" tasting rounds where everyone gets a shot of a particular whiskey and fills out a little sheet with what they think about each round - color, smell, flavor, aftertaste, that sort of thing. At the end of each round we can reveal the name of the liquor. If/when we get tired of that, THEN we can drop the game and drink whatever to our heart's content.

- If you have a favorite libation or one you'd like to try, bring it along; but not everyone is obligated to bring liquor. If you do plan to bring a whiskey, it would be a good idea to post to this thread so that others can see and we can avoid any more duplication than necessary.

- Feel free to bring other beverages (alcoholic and non-), mixers, or food as you choose. My reasonably-well-equipped kitchen is available if necessary, including a coffee maker and an espresso machine.

- I have no extra beds (except for the couch), but LOTS of floor space for anyone who wants to bring a sleeping bag and crash if they're unable to drive/ride home. Safety First!

- Music was mentioned, and I've got a basement "rumpus room" that makes up in size and sonic-isolation-from-neighbors what it lacks in furniture or decor. Bring instruments or not, we'll see what transpires. Alternatively, I've got a stereo and lots of jazz recordings to class up the joint.

- FOOD...You can Google "scotch food pairing" for more ideas, but here's a short list of SUGGESTIONS. Don't feel like you have to limit yourself to these! That said: Coffee (as I mentioned I have a regular coffee machine and an espresso machine), dark chocolate, and shortbread/non-flavored crackers tend to be mentioned most often as palate-cleansers between rounds; next come both strongly-flavored desserts and savory/smoked meats; followed by seafood (including raw sushi); various sharp or hard cheeses, olives, and tapenades on crackers or dense dark breads; baked/roasted veggies, mushrooms, or pumpkin seeds; and smoked almonds or mixed nuts. In other words, foods that will stand up to the strong smokey/peaty flavors of various scotches. Easy on the garlic, though, from what I hear - one source said it tends to clash with the scotch flavors. *shrug* Whatever.... Beyond that, fulfill your personal potluck whims, and it'll be fine (I believe a couple of people have already volunteered to bring scotch eggs so we're probably covered there).

If we want to refine the food and drink list and get more persnickety with subsequent tastings, we can; for a first stab at this, relaxed and easy seems to be the favored approach.

Sounds intriguing. I like the idea of the anonymous rounds & rating, though if we do that it would make sense to limit to a single theme and to no more than five or six varieties. Furthermore if people bring food we'd have to ensure compatibility palate-wise with the scotches being tasted.

Also we need some kind of a live jazz band playing in the background, to clinch the classiness of it all. ;)

I would greatly enjoy this, there are too many scotch whiskys I've not yet tasted.

I think that there are enough scotch whiskys available in Oregon to put together a broad representative set. Adding a couple blendeds for comparison would be good.

In March I attended a bourbon tasting. We tasted a flight of six bourbons and one white dog, each with an introduction, after that it was an open pouring of whichever one one desired. This worked pretty well.

I like scotch and am good at bringing food to potlucks! I even have a (completely silly, but quite decadent) recipe for whiskey & chocolate cupcakes.

Prince_of_Cups is the household booze-authority, thus I'll leave it to him to contribute intelligently to the discussion of selection & tasting-format. I will note that the recent bourbon tasting also included a couple of rounds of cocktails mixed on the various bourbons available, and that's something I favor at theses events-- I think it's interesting to discover that sometimes you like X brand best straight (or over ice or whatever) but Y best in a Rob Roy.

Monday May 30 is Memorial Day (three-day-weekend-yay), which, depending on people's families, schedules, etc etc, could mean that Friday May 27, Saturday May 28, or Sunday May 29 are good choices/bad choices for an event.

Great ideas, keep 'em coming!

spherical_perceptions, I've got a fairly good CD collection, if that's any consolation. :) AND, I'll note that I have a big ol' basement "rumpus room" where we could all set up and crank everything to 11 without disturbing the neighbors, so...anyone is welcome to bring their instruments (I play sax and trumpet).

I don't drink scotch, but I do eat food. I agree with kpele that Memorial Day weekend is probably a bad weekend. On the other hand, I think the weekend before that we'll be out of town.

How do you know what food pairs well with a scotch? I went to a McMenamins scotch tasting with a be-kilted Scotch Master and all, and it was awesome, and the foods seemed to not clash... but I wouldn't know where to start figuring that out on my own. Does anyone have any suggested resources? Or should I just bring pickled herrings with my scotch?

At this moment, my calendar says I could do Memorial Day weekend, the weekend before that, or the weekend before that. So really, I can't help narrow a date down. I'm going to a friend's wedding on 5/7, so that's right out.

As I think about this, I'm beginning to realize that EVERYBODY bringing a bottle of scotch would be serious overkill. So maybe the thing to do would be for a few people to bring a bottle, and everyone else can bring food, non-scotch beverages, that sort of thing. Then the fun begins with deciding who brings what. I'll volunteer to provide a bottle...anyone else?

Scotch flavor pairings, from the MeFi Project Ingredient Pairing app, and from FoodPairing.

Perhaps 5 people could provide scotch, and the rest could be tasked to bring a necessary mixer (for cocktail round(s)) or food?

I've only tried scotch once and I may have spit it out. I was young and it probably was not very good scotch, so it might be time for me to try again.

Rather than one-on-one pairings, it may be prudent to get more substantial food into tummies before the tasting in earnest begins, and then have nibbles thereafter.

If anybody feels like firing up the smoker for a few hours just to make some smoked ice, we can play the game where you try to tell the difference between a cheap blended scotch on a couple of (smoked) rocks and an expensive Islay malt on a couple of (unsmoked) rocks.

[Protip: Lagavulin is interesting and complex enough that you can tell the difference; Laphroaig, not so much.]

[Protip the second: If you are at work, you may not want to google "smoked ice" unless you have an extremely tolerant and progressive IT department.]

The thing about everybody bringing a bottle is that it's not a problem if (a) nobody is under the impression that we have to finish them, and (b) people are willing to gamble that they won't have the most popular scotch at the meetup and accordingly go home with the emptiest bottle. But even that is a kind of winning, so, hey.

I guess the problem with (a) is that you're driving home, if you're driving, with an open bottle of booze in your trunk.

Um, hello? Scotch eggs !

Okay, so...FOOD:

Coffee (as I mentioned I have a regular coffee machine and an espresso machine), dark chocolate, and shortbread tend to be mentioned most often as palate-cleansers between rounds; next come both strongly-flavored desserts and savory/smoked meats; followed by seafood (including raw sushi); various sharp or hard cheeses, olives, and tapenades on crackers or dense dark breads; baked/roasted veggies, mushrooms, or pumpkin seeds; and smoked almonds or mixed nuts. In other words, foods that will stand up to the strong smokey/peaty flavors of various scotches. Easy on the garlic, though, from what I hear - one source said it tends to clash with the scotch flavors. *shrug* Whatever...

So that should give folks some general guidelines. One could get more particular about what foods *exactly* with what style of scotch *exactly*, but frankly one doesn't have the patience (or OCD, depending on one's outlook). I say, let's wing it, fulfill your personal potluck whims, and it'll be fine. If we want to refine it later and get more persnickety with subsequent tastings, that's cool too. For a first stab at this I vote for relaxed and easy.

...and also, DATE:

We'll probably need a show of ...hands (I was about to write "a show of posts" but I knew no possible double-entendre would go unremarked on Metafilter) - who would be available Memorial Day weekend, May 27th-29th? Who could only make it May 20th-21st? 13th-14th? First weekend in May (6th-7th) might be pretty short notice for people but who knows. Once I get something vaguely resembling a consensus (or a large enough bribe), I'll make it official in IRL.
posted by Greg_Ace at 11:48 AM on April 27, 2011

Broadly, I think taking a laissez-faire approach on the first go-round here, and maybe gleaning tips or guidelines from that, is the way to go. If someone's got a lovely bourbon or irish or whatever they want to bring, I say let 'em. For my nickel, I'd rather someone bring a booze they personally like (or are curious about) than grab a random scotch so as not to violate the theme.

For food, since we'll be sampling different-tasting drinks, something appetizer-y that can cleanse the palate between sips would be good.

Unless something comes up, any of those dates work for me.

> Although, wasn't there something about a top secret highly monetizable whisky and tea cocktail?

> Every day is Saturday to the gentleman of leisure.

I'm right there with you. Saturday the 21st works for me. I can see about smoking some water to try that trick. And I'll try to find a way to pack up my smoker/grill and bring it to greg_ace's, if we just want to have a selection of sausages cooking.

I would strongly reccomend that we have a meal part first, and then a scotch tasting with snacks in it. Otherwise folks end up with a stomach full of a booze, which sometimes then ends up on someone elses lawn.

Blended scotch is fine. I am, however, highly disappointed that I guess I'll have to take back all the unicorn-and-griffin-themed party decorations and favors and hope I can get a refund.

Some extra glasses would be great, since the current attendance list is already pushing the limits of what I have on hand (a set of 12 highball-size glasses and a half-dozen shot glasses). I also have a pack of your typical basic plastic picnic cups for general beverages...but those wouldn't be suitable for proper "tasting". So yes please, thanks!

Bring some nice local whiskey, that'd be keen.
posted by cortex at 10:32 AM on May 18, 2011

McCarthy's Single Malt, by clear creek, has been on my "to try" list.

You could also bring a bottle of Wild Turkey (101 proof, rye or bourbon) if we want to have some American representation.
posted by mrzarquon at 10:42 AM on May 18, 2011

Oooh...McCarthy's looks like it would be fun to try. I was thinking of bringing Whipper Snapper, but McCarthy's seems like a better choice. Word.
posted by Lutoslawski at 11:12 AM on May 18, 2011

Whipper Snapper is interesting, but it's a young whiskey, and quite cereal-y. If I recall, I like it in some cocktails (where the cereal flavor is an asset), but not as much on its own.

House Spirits has done a couple of white dogs (unaged), but those might be sold through. I think the McCarthy's is one I've enjoyed.
posted by Kpele at 12:29 PM on May 18, 2011

McCarthy's is a rather beautiful whiskey. Rare as hell, though. On the distillery tour they talk about sending most of it to Japan.

House Spirits might have a white dog / "new make" whiskey available. IIRC the current bottling is Oregon-grown and malted organic barley.

Stonebarn Brandyworks does a beautiful rye white whiskey. It's still available at better liquorstores.

Oh, man, someone makes a corn moonshine in a mason jar that the liquor in St. Johns sells. I might have to pick up a bottle of that finally.
posted by cortex at 12:44 PM on May 18, 2011

> I might have to pick up a bottle of that finally.

I've had it. You really don't.

Fine, a jar then.

Wait, I mean, do tell.

It tastes like shitty high proof vodka. Except the vodka tastes better.
posted by mrzarquon at 2:12 PM on May 18, 2011

Oh, man, are you talking about this stuff? I bought that once like 15 years ago because I thought it was hilarious. It may well be hilarious, but it's fucking gross. These tasting notes are not inaccurate. A highlight: "The Finish: At this point, you'll be thoroughly disgusted, and will be pondering how quickly you can throw your glass into the sink.

Just confirming that there will not be a grill available, but that I may be able to pop something in the oven to heat it up.
posted by mimo at 4:37 PM on May 18, 2011

cortex - I've had Seriously Real Local moonshine - its reputation far outstrips its execution. There's a reason *good* liquor is aged and mellowed for years before being sold.

mimo - Correct, unless someone brings one. I have a smoker grill but not a Grill-grill.
posted by Greg_Ace at 5:11 PM on May 18, 2011

But I do have an oven you can use. Just to be clear.

I have a portable gas grill I can bring. It's good, but won't do more than maybe 6 burgers at a time

fiercekitten, that ought to be big enough for a couple dozen bacon wrapped dates (although maybe not all at once).

No pork shanks, because I figured out how to do smoked pork tenderloin the other day. About 3.5lbs worth of it, to be percise-ish. Sliced thin, served cold, dippable in teriyaki or soy sauce, for some crazy pork based sushi thing.

For those who like a little rough, smokey & slightly raw but nonetheless comforting feel to their single malt islay scotch whisky, I'll bring Bowmore.

Don't lull yourself into a false sense of security, Greg. The apocalypse isn't supposed to happen until 6 pm. Which is the time that our meetup is scheduled for.

...You guys, I'm pretty sure we're going to cause the end of the world.

Do we have lawn chairs to watch the end of the world?

I knew I should have got tiny drink umbrellas. The apocalypse is better with drink umbrellas.

... I think there is already enough scotch.

For what? You need to define the terms of your premise more clearly.

I probably didn't get enough plates, or crackers. I think otherwise we're set. I'm assuming that anyone who wants to attempt any scotch- or bourbon-based cocktails will bring the necessary fixings.

NO UMBRELLAS! I don't want to risk rending any more poorly-understood cosmic forces than absolutely necessary.

That was fun. Good to meet Kpele and Prince_of_Cups. Due to the dinner-ish timing of this meetup I just chowed down on everyone's food contributions, rather than pairing anything, but it was all delicious.

Sorry if there's a sticky spot on the floor near the chalkboard. There was a small Julip spill- I tried to clean it up, but I think the simple syrup got tracked around a little.

Speaking of irresponsible...I managed to be careful about my liquor imbibing, but I totally pigged out on rich sweet desserts and sugar-crashed in a major way on Sunday! Lesson learned - there's more than one way to overindulge.
