I don't have family nearby - but I won't let a little thing like that ruin a perfect excuse to cook a big ol' turkey! Any other MeFites who don't have Thanksgiving plans and want to do a potluck feast are welcome to join me on Saturday Nov. 26th. EDIT: Time changed to avoid a Civil War-like conflict.
I'll provide a turkey...this year I've got a BBQ smoker big enough to cook it that way. People can bring whatever sides/desserts they wish, but let's try to plan ahead so we don't end up with nothing to eat but mashed potatoes with no gravy.

fiercekitten and I will be doing family stuff on Thanksgiving (the 24th), but we'd probably be up for a potluck on the 25th or 26th.

TheDonF and I will actually be in England, so we have to skip Thanksgiving entirely. Otherwise we'd come and bring cornbread sage stuffing that has all this cream in it and is deadly delicious.

Enjoy your trip, and I'm sure you'd be more than welcome to bring that great-sounding dish to one of our future potlucks!

Any more development on this? If it's on Thanksgiving itself I'd probably split the day, but a potluck that weekend would be great.

Not too much response so far, but if even just a few people are interested I can go ahead and set it to an official date/time and see if that catches anyone else's eye. I get Thanksgiving day off, but I'd vote for Friday 25th or Saturday 26th so that I have a day to prep the turkey. (And Sunday to recover...)

I would come to such a thing for hangouts + smoked meats + FIRE.

The last fire was so nice, it finally convinced me to get a 1/2 cord of wood delivered. So flames there will be!

OK, it's official. Let us know what food you plan to bring (cooking facilities available here if needed) so we don't all make the same thing!

Not sure I'll be able to make it before 4:30 or 5:00 due to the Civil War being on ABC at 12:30. But once the game is over I'll be there to either drown my sorrows or celebrate a Duck win. Interestingly, both involve alcohol.

Since I'm sure nickthetourist isn't the only one with an interest in beavers and ducks, I've changed the meeting time to 5pm.
posted by Greg_Ace at 11:54 AM on November 13, 2011

That said, feel free to stop by earlier if you're not watching the game and have nothing better to do. We just won't eat before the official starting time.

We just won't eat before the official starting time.

That just sounds too much like a dare to me.

Nah, no worries. If anything, because of the slow cooking process involved in smoking the turkey, I'll be lucky if it's even done by the official starting time! And besides, based on comments in this thread (I'm looking at you, curious nu) we'll most likely be too busy drinking and alternately staring raptly at / fussing with FIRE to start eating early.

I will bring some type of bread. Probably rolls.
posted by nickthetourist at 8:59 PM on November 20, 2011

OK, so far we've got:

- me providing turkey, gravy, and cranberry sauce, and
- nick providing bread.

who can bring stuffing? side dish(es)? dessert? beverages?
posted by Greg_Ace at 10:02 AM on November 21, 2011

I am bringin' vegetables and can totally bring stuffing as long as no one minds if it is Stove Top, and beverages may be supplied also!

I'll try to pick up some of my favorite Thanksgiving beer: La Fin du Monde.
posted by nickthetourist at 3:20 PM on November 21, 2011

If it's La Fin du Monde as we know it, then nous sentir bien!
posted by Greg_Ace at 5:39 PM on November 21, 2011

then nous sentir bien

Oh dear. The end really is nigh.
posted by spherical_perceptions at 10:24 PM on November 21, 2011

Could have sworn La Fin du Monde meant 'top of the world,' but sure enough, it is 'end of the world.' You can learn all about it here. The beer, that is.
BTW, Unibroue is one of my absolute favorite breweries. It's a shame that so few places actually offer their beers.

I'm a terrible cook, so my idea is to bring a pie of some description from the local bakery, if that would be acceptable to y'all.
posted by spherical_perceptions at 12:21 PM on November 25, 2011

Pie is always acceptable.

Yeah, that's what I get for relying on Google Translate! Je suis vraiment désolé.

hope it's okay that I'm bringing sweet potato croissants. I've got a couple dozen left over.
posted by 0bs01337 at 1:04 PM on November 26, 2011

Things I am bringin':

* vegetables (mushrooms, green beans, onions, carrots, peppers)
* some beer!
* some hard cider!
* some regular cider!
* also some cider that is not in cider form (e.g. "apples")
posted by curious nu at 1:07 PM on November 26, 2011

Also: some potatoes. Unless someone else brings mashed potatoes or something, or Greg already has that planned. Then I won't. Maybe also some tomatoes? It's a mystery.
posted by curious nu at 1:08 PM on November 26, 2011

I haven't made potatoes of any type, so that all sounds fine. I do have a 17-lb turkey that's smoking up nicely, gravy, apple-walnut dressing, red (cabernet sauvignon) and white (sauvignon blanc) wines...and some habanero-infused rum that'll put hair on your chest IF YOU DARE.

I am at work, trying to write my grant. If I feel like I have accomplished enough, I will stop by on my way home after 6pm with a bottle of Danish mead. If not, I am doomed and will take the bottle directly home.
posted by mimo at 1:22 PM on November 26, 2011

That sounds.. like.. you ruined some perfectly good rum. =( WE'LL SEE ABOUT THIS.
posted by curious nu at 1:23 PM on November 26, 2011

It sounds like you've accomplished acquiring Danish mead, which the rest of us have not. You should come by and share your accomplishment. You can brag about it if you want.

It's not like I had to fight a Viking to get it.

Pie has been acquired.

It may not be Danish mead, but it'll do.

Maybe he had to defeat a Viking to get in and he's just being modest.

[obviously, I'm not working hard enough]

It wasn't a viking, but in order to remain modest I shall not describe here what had to be defeated such that the simple words "pie has been acquired" can be uttered with a calm and foreboding air of finality.
