Proposed: Asheville, Saturday, May 7th & Sunday, May 8th
I'll be passing through Asheville on the evening of Sat, May 7th on my way to visit my brother in Ohio, and hiking in the area with a pal on Sunday May 8th. She wants to go someplace a bit out of the ordinary, if possible, and I'd like to see spring wildflowers and/or waterfalls, if possible. We'd almost certainly be up for drinks and food on Saturday or Sunday night as well - i.e., we'll be out and about and would totally love to have MeFite company. Anyone interested in a day hike and/or dinner? Queer bar recommendations welcome, too.

Performance: "A Midsummer Night's Dream" with six actors playing all the parts -- roles randomized at each performance
This production of Shakespeare's comedy features mefite Evangeline and is directed by another mefite, grumblebee. Every actor has memorized multiple roles. At each performance, the audience chooses which actor plays which part. Tickets are normally $18. We're making $15 tickets available to metafilter members. Use the code word MEFI when reserving seats. Details inside. [more inside]

Meetup: Monthly Goat.
Tiny Beers, cheeseborgers, possibly springlike weather. What has everyone been up to since last month? Meet us at the usual place, at the usual time, and listen to the usual stories. It will be fun! No, really. It usually is! The question is: "What are you doing to ensure it stays that way?" That's what I thought; see you there.

Meetup: Los Angeles Euchre Meetup
With as many native upper midwesterners that have emigrated to Los Angeles, there should be a lot more Euchre played around these parts. But, there's not. And we need to fix that. And if you don't know how to play, and are curious how under certain circumstances the Jack of Clubs is actually a Spade, and vice versa (well, quad-versa when considering the red cards), read on. You'll love spending time in the barn. [more inside]

Meetup: Whiskey Tasting at Greg_Ace's house
At the last Portland meetup, the subject of a scotch tasting came up. The backstory is long and unnecessary, but the upshot is that we thought it sounded like a hoot and I'm willing to host it at my house in SE Portland (4414 SE Center St., near SE 42nd and Powell). NOTE: The original plan of "five or six different types of scotch" has mutated into "whiskey" in general, to include Irish whiskey and bourbon. [more inside]

Meetup: Toronto meetup at Ceili Cottage at Queen and Leslie
We are overdue for a meetup. The last one, at the Ben Wicks on Parliament, was fittingly genteel. Shall we try for the Leslieville pub with a warm interior and full menu? The Roy, 842 Queen East west of Logan (72 bus by TTC), Thursday, May 5, 2011, at say 19:30 hours?
No, we’re doing it at the Ceili Cottage, 1301 Queen East just east of Leslie, Thursday, May 12, 7:30 onward. (Queen streetcar. Jones 83 or Greenwood 31 buses; if you’re coming down after about 9:30, the 31B stops directly across the street at Alton and Queen.)

Performance: LIVE from the Lab Comedy Night
Live From the Lab started as a weekly happy hour open mic night but is now the first (and sadly only) monthly Indie Comedy Night in DC. I'm not really sure what Indie Comedy is but I know we're the only ones trying to do something weird you can't find at the comedy clubs. We've got a dozen incredible comics (including Mefi's own comedy genius i_foody), sketch groups, and one dedicated dramatic monologist all taking comedy to it's logical extreme and way beyond it. Expect to get offended and possibly educated accidentally. [more inside]

Performance: Bridgetown Comedy Festival - Tabor Lounge I Showcase
Jon Daly (Jon Stewart, Conan, UCB, SNL)
Solomon Georgio (Seattle)
Don Frost (Portland)
Paul Jay (LA, Biggest Mistake podcast)
Marianne Sierk (LA, Live at Gotham)
Keith Lowell Jensen (famous atheist)
Hosted by Mark Saltveit (Metafilter, palindromes)
Solomon Georgio (lanky, very clever queer Ethiopian Seattlite) and Don Frost (blue collar stream of consciousness improv) are brilliant. I haven't worked with the other comics.
Bridgetown is one of -- if not THE -- best comedy festival(s) in the U.S. 180+ comics in 120+ shows at several venues along Hawthorne Street over several days (April 21-24th, 2011.) Plus long-form improv, sketch and live podcasts. These are the best "comics comics", not necessarily the Seinfelds and Chris Rocks', but some will get famous and all are doing great work right now. Margaret Cho, Andy Dick, Doug Benson, Oscar Nunez, Jimmy Dore, and Hannibal Buress you might know, but also don't miss Kyle Kinane, Kristen Schaal, Brent Weinbach, Moshe Kasher, Hari Kondabolu, Nick Thune, Auggie Smith, James Adonian, or Don Frost either. [So as not to be overdo it, I'm editing this first event to cover the show I'm hosting on Thursday night, at 10pm. ] [more inside]

Meetup: Seattle! I am coming to visit!
I'll be in Seattle the weekend of April 8-10, and I'd love to see you all. Yes, all of you.
Saturday evening works best for me - 7:30? 8 pm? But I leave it to more experienced Seattleites to choose a venue. mrzarquon will be in town as well, so you get two for the price of one! Site confirmed: Shorty's it is! Thanks, Jawn - one of us will search you out to let you know we're there.
