Sat March 5 at 2:00 PM, Somerville Theatre
55 Davis Square, Somerville, MA, USA (Map & Directions)
My 40th birthday* is coming up, and I can't think of a better way to celebrate than watching some of my favorite movies with the fine folks of Metafilter. Saturday, March 5th, 2-11PM, Somerville Theatre in Davis Square.
I'm renting out the 31-seat private micro-cinema for an all-day movie marathon (but come and go as you please) featuring beer, cake, and a special guest appearance by Discourse Marker.

We've got time for about five movies, and the last one is definitely going to be Troll 2. For the remainder of the schedule, I'd like to get your non-binding preferences from the following list (if you are at least a maybe):

O Brother Where Art Thou (103 mins.)
Mystery Men (122 mins.)
Idiocracy (87 mins.)
Wet Hot American Summer (97 mins.)
Galaxy Quest (102 mins.)
Ed Wood (127 mins.)
Hot Fuzz (121 mins.)
Waiting for Guffman (84 mins.)
Rushmore (93 mins.)

Due to time constraints, we can probably only do one of the 2-hour movies. I'll post a schedule once people have a chance to register their preferences.

Theater rules: you are welcome to bring in outside food and beverages, but no glass bottles. I'll be getting a mini-keg of beer (Magic Hat #9 or similar)--your RSVPs will help me settle on the appropriate quantity. Please feel free, but not obligated, to bring snacks to share. As mentioned above, you will be able to come in and out as needed. I don't expect that we'll max out the capacity, but bear it in mind.

*Technically it's February 22nd, but think of this as Horace Rumpole's Birthday (Observed).

I will try very hard to attend this with the mister. I'd rather see the weirder movies [O Brother I saw once, it was fine, likewise Rushmore] but really just hanging out doing whatever is great with me.

Congratulations! That is an awesome idea. I (and probably Metroid Baby) will try to come and pay tribute to your lengthy survival! And possibly see Idiocracy in the theater again, which I never thought I'd do again!
posted by ignignokt at 5:02 PM on February 9, 2011

I will totally be there. The +1 will also likely attend.

I will be there, but you already knew that. Also, dude, there's no space in my username. I feel betrayed.

Sorry, swee tie.

...Get a room! oh, I see you've already reserved one.

I've never seen Mystery Men or Wet Hot American Summer, so my votes are for those, in order of preference.

This sounds awesome. And I will be taking my [+]1. ok now i will get a room

Holy crapbucket, that is such an amazing idea. I've seen all but two of the movies (three if you count Troll 2 -- do I need to watch Troll to follow the plot?), and if the ones I've seen are any indication, the other ones will be great as well.
posted by Plutor at 4:27 AM on February 10, 2011

do I need to watch Troll to follow the plot?

There is nothing that would enable you to follow the plot of Troll 2.

This is a brilliant idea, which I will also be stealing for my birthday, in addition planning to attend.

I am excited for each of these movies.

happy early birthday, HR!

This sounds super fun. I've seen Best Worst Movie so the possibility to watch Troll 2 is really enticing. Can I crash if I bring snacks?
posted by zix at 8:47 AM on February 10, 2011

You are most welcome, zix. And for everyone else, I can't recommend Best Worst Movie highly enough.

Bummer, I'm moving away and haven't been able to make any of the meetups lately. :( You folks have fun. Happy impending birthday Horace Rumpole!!

Whoa..this sounds great and I'd love to come! Troll 2 on a big screen sounds mind bogglingly awesome. I still say it needs a shadow cast, though.

As Thankskilling isn't on the list, I will have to cast my vote for O Brother Where Art Thou.
posted by Cat Pie Hurts at 6:23 AM on February 11, 2011

Yay! I'm coming, and cast my votes for Mystery Men and Galaxy Quest .

Also, there's a rifftrax for Troll 2, unless you feel that would dilute its grandeur.

Oh, believe me, I've got it. But I thought that most of the audience would be seeing it for the first time, and should experience it as the filmmakers intended.

I've seen Mystery Men, Oh Brother Where Art Thou, and Rushmore. (I've also seen Ed Wood, but it was a long time ago, so I would happily sit through that again. Of course, you may get angora as a gift, then....

Wait, so we all need to be weird anti-vegetarian Italians who speak limited broken English? That may be a tough sell.

He would look perfectly adorable in angora, though. Goes beautifully with the beard!

I'm from Brooklyn and I've never met any of you, but my brother and his wife live in Somerville. Would you want a complete stranger showing up to help celebrate your bday? This sounds like a lot of fun.

Here's the schedule of movies. Thanks to everyone who contributed their feedback.

2:00 PM Wet Hot American Summer
3:45 PM Galaxy Quest
5:30 PM Mystery Men
7:45 PM Idiocracy
9:15 PM Troll 2

Also, I feel like I should mention that this is not what I would call an especially family-friendly lineup of movies, so this probably isn't the best event to bring kids to. I hope that won't prevent anybody from coming.
posted by Horace Rumpole at 10:17 AM on February 28, 2011

Galaxy Quest and Mystery Men are quite family-friendly. I'd say Idiocracy is borderline, although it's mostly just (very) crude humor. Nothing an average High Schooler doesn't hear on a daily basis. I can't speak for the other two, as I've never seen them.

I can't make the whole thing, but if my schedule works out, I'll show for a good portion of the afternoon. This is such a beautiful idea that I might do it for my next birthday.

Do you have any snack food preferences or suggestions to give internet strangers crashing your birthday party?
posted by little cow make small moo at 7:13 AM on March 1, 2011

I will confess to a certain fondness for Cheetos, but of course there will be 30 other snackers present, so I'd say bring whatever you'll enjoy (as long as that isn't limberger or lutefisk or something) and hopefully we'll get a good assortment going.

Durian. Got it.

I should check if I have any durian snacks left over from long ago a.r.k. meetups. I expect to drop in mid-afternoon.

Totally acceptable and totally your call, but it does mean we can't come. C'est la vie!

Enjoy your awesome party!

How dark/chatty is it going to be in there? I'd like to be able to say hi to people.

I am looking forward to making some sort of tasty snax to bring!

I want people to be able to hear the movie, but I definitely don't expect reverent silence. Saying hi is totally fine (and open heckling of Troll 2 is specifically encouraged), maybe head out to the hallway (and the Museum of Bad Art!) for an extended conversation. I see this as inviting you all over to my living room for movie night, except with a bigger living room.

zix will drag me in for some of it, probably laterish.

(Okay, more like I'll come in with her so it doesn't look like I'm crashing at the last minute.)

Hmmm... I'm also a total stranger, but I'm in the neighborhood Saturday. And I've never seen GalaxyQuest. May I crash? Cheetos, you say?
posted by Diablevert at 8:19 AM on March 4, 2011

Come crash! Is there any place we need to go in special, sekrit handshake or whatever? I'll be bussing down that morning so may be a little late, but am totally looking forward to this!
posted by jessamyn at 8:26 AM on March 4, 2011

Please do, Diablevert.

I believe you just let the ticket-taker know that you're with the private party in the microcinema, but I'll confirm that later this afternoon and post if there are specific instructions.
posted by Horace Rumpole at 9:54 AM on March 4, 2011

Yes, theater confirms that you can skip the ticket booth, and just let the usher know that you are there for the private party in the microcinema. (You can check my profile for my real name, which is what the reservation is under, but I'll also let them know to expect "Metafilter" and "Horace Rumpole". Anyway, none of that should really be necessary--there's only one microcinema.)
posted by Horace Rumpole at 1:11 PM on March 4, 2011

I'll try to come by sometime in the Wet Hot American Summer to Galaxy Quest time range. It depends heavily on me getting up early enough Saturday to make food both for this and a potluck I'm already committed to Sat evening.

At any rate, have a blast!
posted by maryr at 3:55 PM on March 4, 2011

maryr, if the food is a headache, please don't worry about it. All you have to bring is you.

Also, Idiocracy fans, make sure you get there before the movie starts. Someone's going to go home with a very special prize.

I just chatted with Jim [I'm on the bus, pointed in your direction!] and he's feeling logey and didn't want to give everyone rhinovirus for HR's birthday so he'll be staying home. Maybe we can save him a piece of cake and leave it by his doorstep?
posted by jessamyn at 10:17 AM on March 5, 2011

omg there's a rhino in my virus someone call the tiny zookeeper
