The close to transit meetup
As of now, Thursday is looking to be rainy (c'mon May, get it together). How about the newish The Hollow Nickel on Atlantic? Close to all your favorite public transit lines.
Update: Now that this is moved up a week, who knows what the weather will be. We can update it to an outdoor place if it looks like it'll be nice.
Weekly meetup, come to Sycamore!
I keep saying that I'm going to organize a meetup at Sycamore so let's do it! (On a Thursday, not a Wednesday, so I can actually be there.) Come enjoy the greenery of Ditmas Park while drinking tasty beer! [more inside]
Weeklyn Meetup
Ok, so no one got around to putting this up earlier, so this is last minute, but if you people are interested: weekly meetup, Soda Bar. [more inside]
Monthly Brooklyn Board Game Meetup
Our May meetup will be Saturday the 11th. Bring your games, snacks and/or drinks. Please post in the thread what you're bringing so others can make sure they don't bring the same thing, and/or so they can drool over the thought of homemade cookies. March's board game meetup lasted 9 hours, and April's lasted 8, so feel free to come over even if you can't make it for the first hour or three. [more inside]
Criterion Thursday: Do The Right Thing
This week: Spike Lee's DO THE RIGHT THING ("The hottest day of the year explodes on-screen in this vibrant look at a day in the life of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. Featuring a stellar ensemble cast."). Because it's on a weekday, we're starting a little later: food at 7, movie at 8. [more inside]
Criterion THURSDAY: I Live in Fear
This week, we're trying out moving our Criterion night to Thursdays, with: Akira Kurosawa's I LIVE IN FEAR ("his most literal representation of living in an atomic age"). Because it's on a weekday, we're starting a little later: food at 7, movie at 8. [more inside]

Nobody likes 61 Local! Let's go somewhere else! Like Zombie Hut!
Monthly Brooklyn Board Game Meetup
Our April meetup will be Saturday the 13th. Bring your games, snacks and/or drinks. Please post in the thread what you're bringing so others can make sure they don't bring the same thing, and/or so they can drool over the thought of homemade cookies. Shaking it (meet)up #1
I see the darling rope-rider is on hiatus for a bit and I forecast myself wanting a beer on Wednesday. Perhaps others have a similar drink outlook. Someone else at the last meetup suggested 61 Local, so maybe let's try that? Open to venue change if that's really inconvenient for people or if people are afraid of change.
Cherry Blossom Festival 2013

Criterion Sundays: Dodes’ka-den
Due to some travel we each have planned in the next few weeks, we're taking a two-weekend break from Criterion Sunday - but not to worry! We will return on Sunday, April 7th with: Akira Kurosawa's DODES'KA-DEN ("by turns tragic and transcendant...all of his hopes, fears, and artistic passion are on fervent display"). [more inside]

Lucky 13 Saloon
Criterion Sundays: French Cancan
This week's film: Jean Renoir's FRENCH CANCAN ("a Technicolor tour de force by a master of modern cinema"). Trailer. Charles Silver, curator of film at MoMA: "If someone asked me to recommend two or three essential or seminal Chaplin or Ford films, I would be less hesitant than I would be with Renoir, whose thoughts and feelings seem universal, and whose films seem to encompass virtually all that is Cinema—and life itself." Criterion Sundays: Smiles of a Summer Night
This week's film: Ingmar Bergman's SMILES OF A SUMMER NIGHT. Pauline Kael: "Late in 1955, Ingmar Bergman made a nearly perfect work—the exquisite carnal comedy Smiles of a Summer Night. It was the distillation of elements he had worked with for several years... The film is bathed in beauty, removed from the banalities of short skirts and modern-day streets and shops, and removed in time, it draws us closer." Roger Ebert's Great Movie review. An interview with Bergman about the film. [more inside]
Criterion Sundays: Mr. Arkadin
This week's film: Orson Welles' MR. ARKADIN: The Comprehensive Version. Time Out says: "Long unavailable for theatrical screening... Mr Arkadin assumed an equivalent patina of myth and legend to that cultivated by its central character.... Flamboyantly melodramatic, it's a playfully egocentric display of a magician's perverse revelation of his own trickery."
We are back to our regular schedule this week. Potluck dinner from 6pm, movie starts at 7 en punto. [more inside]

Weekly Brooklyn Bearded Meetup
Have a beard? Want a beard? Want to show off your beard while someone throws popcorn at your face (consensually)? Then this meetup is for you! (Non-beardeds welcome as well).
Criterion Sundays: Eraserhead
As the IFC Center describes it: "David Lynch once described his stunning debut feature simply as 'a dream of dark and troubling things,' but the unclassifiable ERASERHEAD is so much more: an expressionistic headtrip, a Grand Guignol nightmare, a pitch-black comedy of manners, and even a deeply personal allegory about the (post-) nuclear family. Amidst a monochromatic wasteland teeming with smoke and shadows, Jack Nance’s wire-haired wage slave Henry struggles to navigate the horrors of mutant offspring, sinister hallucinations and, most terrifying of all, his new in-laws." How can you resist?
This week there will be no potluck, but feel free to bring snacks to eat during the movie. We're starting a little later than usual. Screening starts at 8pm sharp. [more inside]

Criterion Sundays: Diabolique
What's the point of having access to the masterpieces of cinema if you never actually watch them? It's time to remedy this sad state of affairs, one movie at a time.
Introducing: Criterion Sundays, where each weekend we* will gather for a potluck dinner and watch one of the hundreds of Criterion Collection films available through Roku/Hulu Plus.

Monthly Brooklyn Board Game Meetup
Our February meetup will be either on Saturday the 9th or Sunday the 10th. Bring your games, snacks and/or drinks. Board Games in Brooklyn! (Now with less Hurricane)
Let's try again, shall we? We have Pandemic, Ticket to Ride, Scrabble, and Risk, and I will probably buy Small World or Dominion before this comes around. We have three tables for playing games, and will provide a small amount of snacks. Bring snacks and drinks that you'd like to have. I propose that we do this on either Saturday, Dec. 1, or Sunday, Dec. 2. Once again, we'll start at 2pm. [more inside]

Board Games in Brooklyn!
I want to play board games with you fine people! I can host such an event on Sunday, Oct. 28th. We have Ticket to Ride, Scrabble, and Risk, and I've been looking for an excuse to buy Pandemic or Dominion. We can either use my place (we have three tables that could be used for playing games) or somewhere else.
Brooklyn Fully Vaccinated Weekly Meetup
Don't worry, we're not going to check your records. Just don't sneeze on the popcorn! At the ever-present 4th Ave Pub.
98.1034 Bottles of Beer on the Wall
98.1034 Bottles of Beer on the Wall provides drunken encounters with compulsive systems. A program continually preens itself, inserting lines of code to change its visual representation, but along the way, introducing glitches and new patterns of behavior. A therapist program tries to dispense advice as her logic slowly breaks down. Sound editing software turns simple geometric shapes into hallucinatory landscapes. Photoshop generates intricate patterns in an attempt to hide visual compression. A book displays the abuses and absurdities of the DNS system, an addressing apparatus that has seemingly exhausted meaningful combinations of English words. [more inside]
Dog Meetup 2.0
Let's have another dog meetup. Same time, same place works for me. Let me know if it does for you.
Brooklyn. Weekly. Declarative. Meetup.
It's been a week. The 4th Ave Pub. Not really sure what a declarative sentence is. English education woefully lacking.
Greenpoint (Weekly Brooklyn) Meetup
I moved up to Greenpoint a few weeks ago, and was really eager to explore my new neighborhood, preferably in the company of a few MeFites. So, I decided to hold a meetup there. NOTE: this will also be the weekly Brooklyn meetup this week. [more inside]
Weekly Popcorn-For-Dinner Brooklyn Meetup, Part I
What is popcorn? What is dinner? What is Part II? What does it all mean? How awesome is the 4th Ave Pub? And why is this description entirely composed of questions?
Weekly Meetup, EDITED AND CHANGED AND NOT THE OLD MEETUP YOU REMEMBER
This week's meetup completely slipped my mind. Perhaps all those Cosmonauts gave me Space Amnesia. No fear, faithful friends (and new friends to be!), the meetups continue at the ever-lovely 4th Ave Pub next Wednesday Thursday, the 13th. See you there!

Sycamore meetup!
Since several of us are from the Ditmas Park/Kensington area, we've been talking about having a meetup at Sycamore, the neighborhood whiskey bar/flower shop (don't worry, they've also got beer). There is a backyard, so let's meet there if the weather is nice!
Weekly Meetup -- Wednesday at the 4th Ave Pub
Besides that nasty olive flavored beer, everything about the 4th Ave Pub is amazing and wonderful and superlative. Even the popcorn. Especially the popcorn.
Weekly Meetup -- Wednesday at Barcade
It is at Barcade which is a bar and an arcade. Together. As one. It's all very romantic.

A backyard, beer, and August. What could possibly go wrong? At the 4th Ave Pub.
