Hey New Yorkers, oinopaponton moved to our hood! Let's show her how the New York nerds throw the best meetups. We're gathering July 31st at Rebar in DUMBO.
Meetup starts at 7pm, though I might show up earlier to grab a larger table.

I created a standardized test for that. All questions are "true", "false" or "I don't know."

1) I like people who are awesome
2) I do not like things that bite me
3) I like it when spiders crawl on me in my sleep and put eggs in my ears
4) I am comfortable in a bar/restaurant setting
5) I like to punch strangers
6) I don't like having fun
7) Laughter makes me uncomfortable
8) I like awesome people
9) I don't like not punching strangers
10) When I see someone from the internet, I want to talk to him/her
11) I think bars/restaurants are comfortable
12) I have hugged 5 serial killers today
13) I like enjoying myself
14) I would prefer it if things don't bite me
15) I think it is okay for people to laugh sometimes
16) It is okay to punch a stranger if you get mad enough

posted by Karmakaze at 12:02 PM on July 26, 2010

LEMU: 120
PPM: 0
LSBL: 0

I can't tell you what these acronyms mean. Because I don't remember. But in my professional opinion you should come to the meetup.

what are the downsides of losing mefinonymity? Do you look at people's questions and go...ugh, thats sweetkid and now I know x, y, blahblah about her?
posted by sweetkid at 7:09 AM on July 27, 2010

You can always just come to meetups and not tell us who you are, if you want. It's cool. We definitely won't go "ugh!" Probably we will go "Oh that's her! She's cool! I didn't know that she has a cat." But here are the downsides:

People can recognize your anonymous questions more easily once they know more about your life. This is especially bad if you date someone from mefi. (Then again...that means you met someone from mefi which is pretty cool.)

It makes you less likely to get into fights or state absolutist positions (this is both good and bad--I know that I've been reluctant to challenge bullshit because I know the people involved).

The only thing that ever really hurt about people knowing who I am in real life is some people talking smack about real-life me over on another blog. That kinda sucked but was in a really unique situation which is unlikely to reoccur.
posted by internet fraud detective squad, station number 9 at 7:28 AM on July 27, 2010

It's great— they bathe you in wine and everything. You can politely refuse the spider eggs if that's your preference but I think the biting is mandatory.

posted by edbles at 7:47 AM on July 27, 2010

At a recent meetup we decided that the best way to truly anonymize your question is to auto-translate it to Chinese and then auto-translate it back to English so that no one will recognize your sock-puppet. Here's my question:

"Causes (and confusion) my question complication is that he' S always one little timid about pledge, will do plans for the future. I tell him me to love him, his doesn' t said it, but displays the profound affection to use nearly each way. But his doesn' t sees itself to think, if by anybody, but I. . What? ?"

Nothing aggregiously "he could die at any second" is going on, he's just 18 and more and more bits of him are starting to require extra attention, and sometimes it takes three weeks to figure out "okay, which bit is going to pot NOW?"

Did any of you ever remember or figure out how we ended up with that tiger and that baby in my apartment the next day? They're starting to get real expensive to feed and NYC seems to lack no kill baby shelters. Maybe I should post to ask... Although the tigers pretty great, I think I want to keep him, I ended up naming him Milton and I taught him to do this real fun trick where he chases my roommates around the house for literally hours. It's adorable!!!!

Are you serious? I called last week and they said the website was updated. And the website mentioned no weddings on the 31st.
posted by zoomorphic at 6:43 AM on July 31, 2010

Their Twitter indicates that it is closed for a wedding. And if you go to the calendar as opposed to the homepage, it lists all the closures.

I think the gods are against us.

Can I put in a request for a new location that isn't too far into the depths of Brooklyn? I'm coming from the BX end of the 1 line, so this is already a long trip for me.

Man, fuck wedding season. If it weren't for open bars I would call shenanigans on the entire institution. I called their manager last week and he gave us the green light (though he sounded distracted).

Welp, there's Superfine, which I'm already realizing is probably a good-to-great for this sort of thing. It's directly across the street from ReBar and, indeed, pretty fine. They've got pool in the back, as I recall. Lots of seating, but a little louder than Rebar. I just called and they're open tonight for normal, non-marrying peoples.

Is that okay with everyone? If someone really hates Superfine or has a better suggestion, weigh in soon, otherwise this is our emergency relocation.
