Hey New Yorkers, oinopaponton moved to our hood! Let's show her how the New York nerds throw the best meetups. We're gathering July 31st at Rebar in DUMBO.
Meetup starts at 7pm, though I might show up earlier to grab a larger table.

hmm, this is quite close/convenient for me. i might show up and blow my mefinonymity forever.

...There's a possibility I'll be bringing my beloved cat on his last trip this day. I'll know more in a couple days.

Huh, I'm in NYC right now, missed my first ever meetup by a week!

(as an aside, was anyone at that modest mouse concert last night? any word on a rescheduling?)

So glad Empress's cat is feeling better. I'm waffling about whether I want to make the drive. I'm so indecisive.

what are the downsides of losing mefinonymity? Do you look at people's questions and go...ugh, thats sweetkid and now I know x, y, blahblah about her?

It's great— they bathe you in wine and everything. You can politely refuse the spider eggs if that's your preference but I think the biting is mandatory.

People can recognize your anonymous questions more easily once they know more about your life. This is especially bad if you date someone from mefi. (Then again...that means you met someone from mefi which is pretty cool.)

Sockpuppet.

In order to understand cartoons the boulder must reflect that he is more like a rock that you must squeeze to get white lotus tea to assuage the anger of a mama saber tooth moose lion unless of course the rock is actually made of posion in which case- Why canmt I fel my tongmue?

Saber Tooth Moose Lions are the cutest of all lions.

So, after IFDSSN9's comment about the low 80s, I had to go check the weather report myself and noticed that Sunday is predicted to be 79oF. Yes, that's what we here in New York July 2010 call "sweater weather."

boots are not pushing it. i would wear mine if they were not badly in need of repair.

also, make sure to eat well before arriving or at least while you're in the bar.

because the beer at rebar is strong as fuck and we will be forcing everyone to drink it. a lot.

Right - I finally clicked on the little "yes" up there on the right to make it official. Because Zach (the cat in question) is indeed chugging along okay, but is not quite 100% "healthy" and may not be as boisterously healthy as he used to be any more, and BOY I need to drink.

Nothing aggregiously "he could die at any second" is going on, he's just 18 and more and more bits of him are starting to require extra attention, and sometimes it takes three weeks to figure out "okay, which bit is going to pot NOW?"

Did any of you ever remember or figure out how we ended up with that tiger and that baby in my apartment the next day? They're starting to get real expensive to feed and NYC seems to lack no kill baby shelters. Maybe I should post to ask... Although the tigers pretty great, I think I want to keep him, I ended up naming him Milton and I taught him to do this real fun trick where he chases my roommates around the house for literally hours. It's adorable!!!!

According to their event calendar they are closed all day today for a wedding. Has anyone checked on this? Their Open Table status is "Restaurant is currently unavailable."
posted by Splunge at 4:39 AM on July 31, 2010

In fact it looks like they're closed on Saturdays until October. Which seems like an odd business plan for a bar.
posted by sciencegeek at 6:01 AM on July 31, 2010 [1 favorite]

Are you serious? I called last week and they said the website was updated. And the website mentioned no weddings on the 31st.
posted by zoomorphic at 6:43 AM on July 31, 2010

Their Twitter indicates that it is closed for a wedding. And if you go to the calendar as opposed to the homepage, it lists all the closures.

I think the gods are against us.

Can I put in a request for a new location that isn't too far into the depths of Brooklyn? I'm coming from the BX end of the 1 line, so this is already a long trip for me.
posted by sciencegeek at 6:58 AM on July 31, 2010

Man, fuck wedding season. If it weren't for open bars I would call shenanigans on the entire institution. I called their manager last week and he gave us the green light (though he sounded distracted).

Welp, there's Superfine, which I'm already realizing is probably a good-to-great for this sort of thing. It's directly across the street from ReBar and, indeed, pretty fine. They've got pool in the back, as I recall. Lots of seating, but a little louder than Rebar. I just called and they're open tonight for normal, non-marrying peoples.

Is that okay with everyone? If someone really hates Superfine or has a better suggestion, weigh in soon, otherwise this is our emergency relocation.
posted by zoomorphic at 7:18 AM on July 31, 2010

Hey what about Low Bar? It was good that one time...

But then again, it is Saturday. Packed?

But yeah, Superfine is good!
posted by functionequalsform at 8:30 AM on July 31, 2010

Keeping it close to ReBar makes it easier for us to cast a pox upon the house of the marrieds who almost killed our goodtimes.

Have we considered bringing protest signs?
posted by sciencegeek at 8:45 AM on July 31, 2010

I have a stack of egg cartons I'm going to let sit in the sun all day so we should be good.
posted by The Straightener at 8:48 AM on July 31, 2010

F=F, Low Bar would have been my second choice except it closed and then reopened as an overpriced and pretentiously-named tapas bar that shames LB's legacy. I'm still mourning their Old Fashioneds. Can't type the name on an iPhone but it's pronounced EN-ya.
posted by zoomorphic at 10:09 AM on July 31, 2010

Also it would assuage my anxieties if other people would register their awareness of the venue change and/or alert your fellow mefites.
posted by zoomorphic at 10:12 AM on July 31, 2010
