Trivia at Vinyl Wine Bar

My GF and I will be heading over to Vinyl Coffee & Wine Bar on Tuesday to give their trivia a try. We've never been before, so our knowledge comes exclusively from the fact that they advertise having trivia and this old SF Gate article. If this sounds like your bag, swing by & join the team! It ostensibly starts at eight, and ends at ten.

Galaxy Quest at the New Parkway

I'm a fan of Galaxy Quest, which is showing at Oakland's New Parkway at 9:30 pm on Thursday, August 13. Would anyone like to join me at 8:30 pm for a drink before the showing? The New Parkway has sofas, booze, food, and a great community vibe. It's within walking distance of the 19th Street Bart station in Oakland and a variety of buses so you don't need a car to get there--and you get a discount if you ride your bike. ("Patrons entering the theater carrying a bike helmet will receive a $1 discount.")

Georgian Soup Dumplings and All The Games

Citizens! I have a sudden and incontrovertibly ingenious plan, inspired by a Jonathan Gold review on KCRW of the Tumanyan Khinkali Factory, describing the khinkali as a "near peak soup dumpling experience." Given that this is in Glendale, and thus in vague proximity (2ish miles) to MeFite favorite GameHaus Cafe (previously and previouslier)...well, you can imagine my excitement! [more inside]

Post ALA Meetup

I will be in San Francisco for ALA, and a meetup would be grand. I will propose Monday night (29 June) at 6pm-ish. I will be near Levi's Plaza on the Embarcadero, so something near that would be best for me, but I am open to other options. Any thoughts?

Walnut Creek Corners Tavern Big Swanky Restaurant/Bar Meetup

I'd like to hold a meetup at Corners Tavern in Walnut Creek. This is an upscale, "swanky" venue, but also whimsical with a sense of humor, and only semi-formal, as I see it. It's situated in Broadway Plaza near Macy's and is easy to find. About 20-30 minute walk from BART, depending on what lights you get. What say you? [more inside]

FOGcon meetup

FOGcon, a literary sf convention, is happening on March 6-8 in Walnut Creek. This year's theme is The Traveller. "From The Odyssey to Dr. Who, Margery Kempe to Alyx, the Traveler is an iconic figure. This trope evokes a whole class of stories in both SF and fantasy in a compact and emotionally suggestive form....We will explore such topics as modes of travel, evolving attitudes toward the idea of an alien realm, the range of metaphors travel stands for, changing expectations about the experience of earthly or space travel, and how to be an extreme wilderness hiker - or an extreme hitchhiker. And lots more. Honored Guests: Kim Stanley Robinson, Catherynne M. Valente, Joanna Russ (posthumous)." [more inside]

Grand Central Market Game Nights -- Take two!

After checking in with Celsius1414 I'm re-posting this since it didn't get off the ground last time.

Food! Drink! Games! Friends! Food and drink and games and friends at the same time!

----

I stumbled across a mention of gaming nights at Grand Central Market in DTLA and tracked down this press release and then this page.

Game Night at Grand Central Market

Looking to unwind after a tough day at work? Searching for fast, amazing fare to satisfy your foodie cravings? Planning a non-cliche date night? Whatever your Downtown LA dilemma, the city's oldest food hub has your back.

Enter Game Night -- eat, drink and play every Thursday until 9 pm. Grab dinner and drinks from our late hours vendors over an assortment of classic and new games: ping-pong, cornhole toss, Jenga, Uno, Cards Against Humanity, Scrabble, and many more. Just head over to the Hill St. Platform to get started.

We broached the subject of a gaming night at our last meetup (mmmm ramen), so this "proposed" post is more of a means to continue that conversation than saying it should be here at GCM necessarily.

Update 9/5: The consensus during our Ethiopian food meetup conversation seemed to be that with everybody being spread out, it's difficult to make a game night plan on work nights. If someone else wants to propose game/trivia/movie meetups for their individual environs, that might be the better way to go. [more inside]

Field trip: the Museum of Jurassic Technology TAKE TWO

Reposting from previous event! Chicainthecity most courteously reminded me that the event needed updating, and we discussed NOVEMBER 8th as the most likely afternoon. The consensus is now November 22nd: let us know in the thread! The Museum of Jurassic Technology in Culver City is a place that engenders love and and serious confusion, perhaps in equal measures. It is a palace of many mythical wonders and it was proposed as one of the next meetup locations. It's open until 6:00 PM on Saturdays; the cafe offers complimentary tea and cookies until 5:00. (It is also close to the Center for Land Use Interpretation, which is equally a palace of wonders if you like scholastic text and resource allocation. They also have quite a cool map of points of interest in the area around their Culver City branch.) [more inside]

Every Sunday in October, Old World Village in Huntington Beach, puts on the sport of kings: Dachshund Racing! The races run from 3 PM to 4 PM.
