MeFi-favorite Flying Lotus is playing a hometown show at House of Blues Sunset w/ the always-relaxing Teebs (sample here) and bass virtuoso Thundercat (music sample here, really short bass solo here). Let's go enjoy it together and maybe get food/drinks before/after. :) tix and other info for the show here

food and drink suggestions would be appreciated, btw... i am not familiar with the sunset strip at all.

Directions to Betalevel: 1) Find yourself in front of "FULL HOUSE RESTAURANT" located at 963 N. Hill Street in Chinatown. 2) Locate the alley on the left hand side of Full House. 3) Walk about 20 feet down the alley (away from the street). 4) Stop. 5) Notice dumpster on your right hand side. 6) Take a right and continue down the alley. 7) Exercise caution so as not trip on the wobbly cement blocks underfoot 8) The entrance to Betalevel is located 10 yards down on left side, behind a red door, down a black staircase. Description: In an age of musical pluralism, it would seem that song contests should be an anachronism. And yet Idol, The Voice, and other similar franchises remain amongst the top-rated television programs internationally. On the twentieth anniversary of the EU, one might think that European nationalism had died down a bit. But, you know, what's twenty years compared to hundreds of years of history? And there was a while there when the Eurodisco sound was decidedly outré, having taken a backseat first to the guitar-based approach of grunge and then the global ascendancy of hip hop. More and more, however, the blueprint for the "EDM" on the pop charts was drawn up in studios in Italy or Belgium, circa 1983. And so, with all this being the case, one might conclude that the Eurovision Song Contest, an annual event celebrating competition, national pride, and above all else the undying beat of disco, would feel strangely relevant again. And maybe, in a way, it does. And yet it still feels cheesy. Very, very cheesy. (In the end, its earnestness is probably what does it in. You just can't get away with outfits like that anymore if you mean it.) And we say CELEBRATE THE CHEESE! How, precisely, do we recommend celebrating the cheese? With cheese, natch! Bring your favorite European cheese to Betalevel on Saturday*, we'll bring some of ours, we'll watch the Eurovision finals together, and while votes are being cast on songs, we'll cast our own votes — for cheese. Surely there are more than a few board gaming, card dealing, and role playing MeFites out there. Let's organize a meetup for mid-May. The afternoon of Sunday May 19th. The location is set to Mountain View but we can change that easily. If you are interested hop in the thread. If you don't like the date/time give suggestions for alternatives. Location will vary depending on the number of people. For groups < 12 I can host at my house in South Bay. If we grow larger we'll find a venue. I have access to some largish areas for up to 30 players. Games to play can be sorted out later.

How would Bay Area Metafilterians like to meet up in a locked room in a Japanese mystery game, with 90 minutes to solve the puzzle and get out? Inspired by this SF Chronicle article.

In yesterday's SF Chronicle there was an article about a mystery game where you and up to 10 others are locked in a room for 90 minutes. Inside the room are a bunch of clues that tell you how to get out! How awesome would it be for a contingent of Bay Area Metafilterians to crack the puzzle? Be warned though, that the clues are set up to be difficult enough so that only about 5% of the participants actually solve it. Apparently the room also has guide type people in it as well, to help people - the Chronicle reporter said they discouraged their group from taking the wiring apart... No indication as to whether you can bring beer in, but I'm sure we can figure something out! Here's the webpage for the event and the dates available - looks like Thurs - Sunday March 6-10 and 27-31. It repeats several times a day. Unfortunately, it looks like it's about $30 a ticket, so not cheap, but maybe if we did it as a group we could get a discount?

Presentation: Two MeFites at WonderCon

jedicus and I will be presenting at WonderCon 2013 in Anaheim, California. Our presentation is scheduled for Friday, March 29 at 6:30-8:30PM.

We're collaborating with the physicians from Broadcast Thought (their website is currently borked) who do a lot of work analyzing the portrayal of mental illness in fiction, especially TV and movies. The presentation will involve the interaction of mental illness and criminal law in a fictional setting appropriate for the con. We're trying to craft something with significant audience participation, so don't come expecting a straight lecture or moderated panel discussion. Feel free to drop on by! Our schedules are still a little bit in flux, but there's also the possibility of a meetup outside the con. If no one beats us to it, and if our schedules allow, we'll post a separate Event for that later in March.

Next Sunday (March 3) the Roxie (16th and Mission) is screening the rarely-seen pre-code classic "Shanghai Express"- directed by Joseph Von Sternberg and starring the incomparable Marlene Dietrich and Anna May Wong. Meetup fun could occur before, after, and during, depending on preferences.

Screenings are at 3:30 and 7:30, which gives interested parties different options for pre- or post- drinking and nourishment and in joining in for the movie or not, with many appealing options right in the neighborhood. I was thinking maybe the matinee and then some early booze or eats (people could opt in as they see fit), but am open depending on schedules and preferences. Plot summary: crazy shit goes down on a train. And you've got Marlene to look at. If you already have your membership to Gallifrey One, let's meet up! I know it's capped at 3200 people this year, but even so, I can't be the only Mefite going. (If you haven't heard of it and you're a Doctor Who fan, you really should go: Gallifrey One. But not this year, because it's sold out. Next year's tickets will go on sale March 8, IIRC.) I'll arrive tomorrow and I'll be there through Monday morning. I know the schedule is packed, but if anyone else IS there, do you want to have breakfast or carve out our very own corner of LobbyCon? (Warning: I'm terrible at social stuff...but I do like talking to people and I'd love to finally meet some more Mefites, if my hunch is right and some of you will be there.)

Yoni Ki Baat is a South Asian take on the Vagina Monologues that has been part of the Bay Area for nearly 10 years. The pieces, written by South Asians around the world, deal with various themes of gender, sexuality, and race - from sexual repression, to health and beauty concerns, to love and marriage. I am performing in this so I'd love to see you there!

There are two ticket dates: Saturday March 9th and Sunday March 10th. The Saturday show starts at 7pm and the Sunday show is at 5pm. My wife (dancingfruitbat) my adorable 1-year-old son and I are going to be in San Diego from February 1st through February 5th and would love to meet up with some MeFites while we're visiting. Except for Friday night we don't have set plans in the evening although we will be meeting with a lot of relatives. The first two nights we will be in the Kearny Mesa neighborhood and then moving on to Pacific Beach for the next few days. We've gotten really excited reading the Convoy Street blog and would be especially interested in a meetup there!
