Comedy for Carmen (Rubio)
I'm hosting a killer comedy showcase at the very cool Rose City Book Pub on Fremont. Lineup includes
Adam Pasi (Portland's Funniest Person winner), Belinda Carroll, Alex Rios, Julia Ramos, Thomas Lundy, Meanroth Ny, and Mefi's own Mark Saltveit (my final Portland gig before moving)
We'll pass the hat about a third of the way through the show but no one will be turned away.
No politicians, no speeches, just funny.
SymmyS Awards for the world's best new palindromes
On 6/10/2016, we'll announce tthe world's best new palindromes in 7 categories: short, medium, long, poetic, word-unit, visual and nasty palindromes. Free admission, all ages (the nasty winners won't be read aloud). Entertainers include Comedian Dax Jordan from Los Angeles, Metafilter's own Mark Saltveit (the reigning World Palindrome Champion) as MC/comedian, and Michael "Shoehorn" Conley, Portland's epic tap-dancing saxophonist (who is also one of the nominees). Should be fun, there's beer and good food, and the event will be short (one hour max), 6-7pm. And free admission. [more inside]
Chip Kelly's first NFL Game + "Tao of Chip Kelly" signing
To celebrate Chip's first real NFL game, McMenamin's Backstage Bar is showing the game against Washington at 3:55pm, after a Q&A and book signing for "The Tao of Chip Kelly" by metafilter's own msalt.
I'm hoping to rally enough steady Chip/Eagles fans to convince McMenamin's to regularly show Eagles games all year since they're not on national TV again, except maybe the Thursday night KC game.
Portland's Funniest Person comedy show
Opening night of Portland's Funniest Person contest, with a lot of the strongest competitors -- the ones who already work at Helium as MCs or features, including Metafilter's own msalt, Gabe Dinger, and Shane Torres.
This is a dozen comics doing 5-6 minutes sets of their best material. If you tell them you're a friend of Mark, you can get 2 for 1 tickets (2 for $10). If that's still a bit steep, memail msalt as he has a limited number of free tickets, first come first served.
Standup Comedy in Portland - Sklar Brothers and msalt
I'm going to be hosting a week at Helium Comedy Club. Headliners are the Sklar Brothers -- regular guests on ESPN Sports Center, & former hosts of Cheap Seats on ESPN. They've appeared on many TV shows including Entourage, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Grey's Anatomy (where they played conjoined twins). Also, they're funny.
(Edited so it doesn't disappear before the last show Saturday) [more inside]
Bridgetown Comedy Festival - Tabor Lounge I Showcase
Jon Daly (Jon Stewart, Conan, UCB, SNL)
Solomon Georgio (Seattle)
Don Frost (Portland)
Paul Jay (LA, Biggest Mistake podcast)
Marianne Sierk (LA, Live at Gotham)
Keith Lowell Jensen (famous atheist)
Hosted by Mark Saltveit (Metafilter, palindromes)
Solomon Georgio (lanky, very clever queer Ethiopian Seattlite) and Don Frost (blue collar stream of consciousness improv) are brilliant. I haven't worked with the other comics.
Bridgetown is one of -- if not THE -- best comedy festival(s) in the U.S. 180+ comics in 120+ shows at several venues along Hawthorne Street over several days (April 21-24th, 2011.) Plus long-form improv, sketch and live podcasts. These are the best "comics comics", not necessarily the Seinfelds and Chris Rocks', but some will get famous and all are doing great work right now. Margaret Cho, Andy Dick, Doug Benson, Oscar Nunez, Jimmy Dore, and Hannibal Buress you might know, but also don't miss Kyle Kinane, Kristen Schaal, Brent Weinbach, Moshe Kasher, Hari Kondabolu, Nick Thune, Auggie Smith, James Adonian, or Don Frost either. [So as not to be overdo it, I'm editing this first event to cover the show I'm hosting on Thursday night, at 10pm. ] [more inside]
