Auxiliary Trivia Meetup

Thu October 27 at 8:00 PM, Fizz
3220 N Lincoln Ave, Chicago, IL, USA (Map & Directions)
Since phunniemee has requested a mid-month gathering - and she also brought up trivia earlier - We're going out for trivia on Thursday, 10/27.
We're going to Fizz in Lakeview (Belmont & Lincoln). Trivia begins at 8.30pm, so I figure we could meet around 8 to get settled in. A bit later than we're used to, I know, but their food is good and beer list is pretty big.

Trivia is run by Team Trivia Illinois. They have a wide variety of questions, some are on the topic of 'sport' (but aren't too challenging), and they give away one answer online. They say teams can be as big as we want.

Darn you, MeFi and your efficiency. I was excited that I got an email then realized it was (again) because I had created an event within fifty miles of myself.

HELL YES.

This is a terrible lesson: whine enough about something and eventually one of your minions buddies will do your bidding.

Weird, this didn't get sent to my inbox, I only saw the link in the Goat thread.

I'd be game. I've been to trivia there once before, and seem to remember having a good time. The beer was fantastic, though the list was very nearly overwhelming with its overabundance of choice. The Goat, this is not.

Pat Quinn is talking on the teevee, but not saying anything.

Hey the beer prices look really good! Gumballhead for $5! Pere Jacques for $7! LET'S DO IT

Dang! I've got a class on Thursday nights.

Also: I don't know about Governor Pat Quinn, but when I have nothing to say, my lips are sealed.

I feel like this is exactly the kind of thing someone who's really good at trivia would say.

I am TOTALLY interested for the future, but can't this time - previous engagement.

I am most definitely in for this.

I want in on this. I've been determined to make a meetup for a while.

That sets a dangerous precedent. What happens if we do this again next month and you can't come? We can't show up without our mascot! Someone needs to start making a giant, fuzzy crankyrogalsky bobble head, stat!
posted by phunniemee at 10:08 AM on October 19, 2011

That's probably in my wheelhouse anyway. I can pretty much guarantee I have more faux fur ... well, this is surely going to go badly.

But I have A LOT.
posted by crankyrogalsky at 2:39 PM on October 19, 2011

Does this place want us to, like, reserve tables or teams or anything for the quiz? Or is it more casual?
posted by phunniemee at 2:58 PM on October 19, 2011

Also, you need to confirm this thing so Chicago can move on up the most active list. Right now we're tied with Houston. Houston.
posted by phunniemee at 3:06 PM on October 19, 2011

I'm a might-could next Thursday.

Youngergirl! Confirm this! We must pull ahead of Houston!
posted by tzikeh at 6:04 PM on October 19, 2011

Sorry for the delay in confirming, guys! I got distracted. The last time I was there, we didn't need to reserve a table. We did need a team name though. SO START THINKING, PEOPLE!!
posted by youngergirl44 at 6:24 PM on October 19, 2011

We did need a team name though.

What's going on in pop culture these days?

Last time I went to a trivia night, Scarlett Johansson had just broken up with her husband. Our team name was "The Future Ex Mr. Scarlett Johansson" (the team was mostly dudes who kept talking about her bangin' boobs), which was met with rave reviews.
posted by phunniemee at 7:20 PM on October 19, 2011

The only things I can think of, pop-culture-wise, are Breaking Bad stuff, Dexter stuff, and Walking Dead stuff.

Good thing it's Hallowe'en time.

How does one have a conversation about a celebrity's boobs? It seems like a limited topic.

Dude 1: Did you hear? Scarlett Johansson broke up with her husband!
My BF: Who's Scarlett Johansson?
Me: The blonde chick from that movie.
My BF: The Big Lebowski?
Me: No, Match Point. [note: we had just watched Match Point that weekend]
My BF: There was a blonde chick in that?
Me: *sigh* Yes.
Dude 2: How do you not know who Scarlett Johansson is?!
Dude 1: She's the extremely hot one!
Dude 2: With gigantic boobs!
Me: Seriously? How do you not remember this?
Dude 1: Gigantic boobs!

Oh, you know, volume, consistency, what class of spheroid they are, whether there are support structures present, what attachments and protuberances are present, all kinds of vectors.

We need somewhere consistent to track people's disparaging comments of Chicago pizza, so we can rail against their ignorance. When someone creates that, add Justice Scalia.

Then tell Adam. But not Spiffy.
posted by BevosAngryGhost at 10:27 AM on October 20, 2011

There, see that, Spiffy? Do you really want to side with Scalia on this?
posted by shakespeherian at 10:39 AM on October 20, 2011

Given that I explicitly said that I don't think that? To such a biting inquiry, I suppose my answer would be: Konami's Stinger.

I can but pity you, zombiestripperjesuscat. Partly because you have closed your eyes to pizzic glory, but mostly because your head is the first third of a cat protruding from an undead stripper's skull.

'Pizzic' is officially a word.
posted by shakespeherian at 2:09 PM on October 20, 2011

My cat loved pepperoni pizza. She was not, however, a zombie. Or Jesus. I suppose she was a stripper in the casual sense of the term--the very few times in her life when she had to wear the Cone of Shame so that she wouldn't bite at a sore spot on her leg or something, she would contort her body all *kinds* of ways to take it off.

The free answer for tonight is "lace".

Would naming our team ZombieStripperJesusCat be offensive?
posted by youngergirl44 at 6:10 AM on October 27, 2011

Also, if this goes well, perhaps we can join their league. We could win prizes!
posted by youngergirl44 at 6:12 AM on October 27, 2011

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay! Triiiiiiiiiviaaaaaa tooooniiiiiiight!!

I'm cool with naming the team ZombieStripperJesusCat. If we get any flak about it, we just need to say, "WHAT, YOU DON'T LOVE KITTIES?!" (Or zombies or jesus or strippers, depending on what kind of person confronts us. Because most people like at least one of those things.)
posted by phunniemee at 6:54 AM on October 27, 2011

I would be offended, but only because ZombieStripperJesusCat has no concept of pastry-making as it contrasts with bread-making. Sorry to miss it tonight! I hope you go back later, so I can come along!

I used to have a regular trivia night at the Hidden Shamrock, then my teammates moved, got married, or otherwise disappeared.

No doubt -- as long as they aren't trying to eat my brains or proselytizer too much (same thing?), I'm a big fan of all four.

I'd really like to come to this, and it's such a convenient just-down-Ashland trip that I hope I can. I've got a pukey partner at home but talking to him, it sounds like it might be the type of sick where he'd appreciate me not being around. But if I can't make it, kick ass!

Even though I picked 8pm, I think that I'm going to try and be there between 7 and 7.30 to score a table. It should take me about half an hour to get there from the office - I'll post when I'm on my way.

Holy crap, guys. My computer crashed. HARD. I've spent the better half of the afternoon intermittently clutching a tiny screwdriver and sobbing.

I spent an hour on the phone with my bf's tech genius little bro trying to walk me through what could be wrong, and I somehow managed to get it started up again (I think it's a fluke, though) which is how I'm even able to post this, and now I'm rabidly backing up EVERYTHING because I'm pretty sure it'll die again any second.

Anyway, because I'm not going to leave until I've got everything important transferred offa this sucker, I probably won't be there until closer to 8:30. Save me a good seat, in the middle, so I can rant to everyone about HOW DEAD MY COMPUTER IS OMG. See you folks soon! (Hopefully!)

Our first trivia outing was a success. And by success, I mean people liked it and we drank many, many beers. At least I did - if I ever see Tony LaRussa again, it'll be too soon. We did not win, but that just means we have to do it again and again until we win. And then probably do it some more.
