Maybe THIS time I'll remember to log my hours daily and not have to put them in in enormous chunks! Or maybe not. We get to Japan either way.

I just logged 2 hours from the past 3 days. Trying to log my time at least once a week. Thanks for sticking with it, aniola!

Well, and everyone else, too, of course!

I ended up listing my January and February hours in a single chunk, but I'm going to shoot for Bella Donna's goal of weekly logging. Thanks! Now when I don't want to walk, I can tell myself to take one for the team!

Just logged my past 7 days of walking. Didnā€™t see the new entry but I think itā€™s just a glitch. 4:5 hours total, which is better than I expected. We can do this!
posted by Bella Donna at 10:02 AM on March 8, 2021

I have to go through and manually re-sort from Z to A before new entries will show at the top of the log instead of the bottom. Haven't figured out how to get it to do that automatically yet.
posted by aniola at 12:38 PM on March 8, 2021 [1 favorite]

If anyone cares, let me know and I will get around to figuring out how to automate it. I am operating on the assumption that I'm nearly the only one who reads the log.

The honorary puffin post was pretty fun! Those are my favorite kinds of posts. And science Twitter posts.

I read the log too! It's fun to see the little things people notice, and the different activities we're all doing. KathrynM, amazing job getting to Week 5 of C25K, getting to Week 5 of anything is an achievement! (I am a serial plan starter...)

Also you guys make me laugh...

Puffin cams are coming back online for the spring! 10pm in CA is 6am in the UK and perfect for for a few minutes of puffin watching time.

Shetlandā€™s puffins return to the cliffs at Sumburgh Head

Each morning particularly the Puffins gather on top of the Hide before heading out to sea. (Up close and personal!!!)

Is this a meetup?

If I refuse to move from my couch for whatever reason can I still attend said meetup?

Reasons include: desperation, despair, depression, demoralization, etc.

But I love me some puffins.

I've actually been logging again. I've been sitting on my butt at work doing busy work/data entry. Also have been too tired to actually go out running. I signed up for a 5K on July 3rd, so I need to get moving again.

IT'S ALIIIIIIVE!

There now exists one stuffed tufted puffin in a swimming pose. My guess is it's almost to scale but not quite. Its beak does not glow in the dark or under ultraviolet light. Indisputably homemade. Mostly all natural fiber exterior, polyester fill. Comes from a home with a little dog in it. Button eyes are a pretty decent color match! Spare eye on butt.

Tufts are streamlined, whoever wins it can make them sprawly if they'd prefer sprawly tufts.

But! I did make the ballot box. Think of it like one of those "win this lawn chair!" boxes at a grocery store. Anyone can fill out a form for anyone. Traditionally, most people fill out a single entry for themselves. But there's no rule saying you have to do it that way.

Can someone else arbitrarily pick a deadline for entering to win? First arbitrary deadline wins.

I recently learned my partner was going to be a wildlife photographer when he grew up. Maybe he can take a photo of the stuffed puffin! A new kind of wildlife. Tame life.
posted by aniola at 6:27 PM on May 2, 2021 [2 favorites]

aniola's partner here: I took some photos, and aniola put them in the ballot box form linked in her comment above.

For better or for worse, the wildlife photographer aspiration didn't last much past 2nd grade... but it was really easy to catch this particular puffin in good light/poses. (-:

posted by kathrynm at 6:08 AM on May 4, 2021 [2 favorites]

It has been my observation that allowing that practice (it is totally fine) mostly just seems to lead to procrastination of data entry, and then we don't get to see as many day-to-day notes to go along with the entries. So what I'm saying is: we'll miss you. But go for it!
posted by aniola at 6:12 AM on May 4, 2021

We have walked for 1046.1 hours and are 3138.4 miles into our 5141.6 mile journey.

YAY! Just added my belated entries for, basically, weeks and weeks and weeks.

Also, thank you WalkerWestridge for modelling self-care. So sorry that walking has become so painful. Very much hope your leg improves soon!
posted by Bella Donna at 7:22 AM on May 6, 2021 [1 favorite]

SPEAKing of self-care. There've been a couple instances of this lately, so now we have a rule!

Rule #1. No flaggellation on this pirate puffin crew, not even self-flaggellation. Everyone can do this walk* the way that works best for them. Memail me if you need me to send you a licorice whip or something as a reminder of this rule.

Lots of love to all y'all!

The finalists are Lemonade, KathrynM, and katecholamine.

Can somebody who is not me or a finalist please pull a name out of the figurative pirate hat?
posted by aniola at 2:39 PM on May 10, 2021 [3 favorites]

First name pulled out of the figurative pirate hat wins.
posted by aniola at 4:19 PM on May 10, 2021

Real hats are okay, too.
posted by aniola at 7:33 PM on May 10, 2021

Ask your partner to do it! I canā€™t do it because Iā€™m biased. I think you should keep it because youā€™ve done so much work. So I say outsource it to the other person in your household because I cannot be trusted to help. My apologies.
posted by Bella Donna at 9:11 AM on May 11, 2021

My partner refused. There is a new rule. Rule #2: You have to pick a finalist's name out of the literal or figurative hat.

It will be ok, we're only like 80% of the way there. There's still time. We'll just have to wait until someone comes along and finds this thread who has a hat.

I just asked chat for help.
posted by aniola at 9:26 AM on May 11, 2021 [1 favorite]

Aniola asked in The Chat for a disinterested 3rd party to draw names out of a hat. Names were printed, folded, placed in an ISO standard baseball cap and mixed. One name was drawn.

The winner is katecholamine

CongrAA-AAtulations, KATECHOLAMINE!

Memail me and let me know your mailing address and whether you'd like your puffin in a package to protect it from mail germs, spills, and whatnot, or unwrapped so all the postal workers can admire the puffin. (I figure if they can send a potato through the mail unwrapped, I can surely send a stuffed tufted puffin that way.)
