MeFi IRL

In the past I've tried doing meetups at DragonCon, at specific times and places there, and I only ever met one person that way. So I gave up. Now I'm doing it again, but differently. I'm going to be at DragonCon this year. If you're also going to be there, let me know and we can communicate and try to say hi in person over Labor Day Weekend. Nothing huge, just a chance to bump into interesting people and maybe go to related panels or get in board games or the like. I'm going alone and it'd be nice to actually see people that I know (even if just in the MeFi online kind of way).

DragonCon 2018 is nigh and the schedule app update is out. Past years have proven that an actual designated time & place for a mefi meetup is logistically unlikely, but, just wanted to open a thread for roll call/friend code exchange/panel postmortems, etc. [more inside]

Penguicon is a combination scifi convention and open source conference that's been running annually for 15 years. I'm a guest of honor at Penguicon 2017 (my schedule), as is MeFi's own Cory Doctorow (schedule) and Ada Palmer (schedule) whose work's been discussed on MetaFilter several times. Metafilter has a number of furry and furry-friendly members and lurkers. Biggest Little FurCon in Reno from May 12-15 seems to be the spring con that everybody is going to. Let's have a meet-n-greet in the Main Stage space near the artist's alley at 1:30 PM on Saturday. [more inside]

There's a significant number of MeFites who love Guillermo del Toro's robots-punchan-monsters film, Pacific Rim. Shatterdome Atlanta is in its second year and is expanding to 2 days -- June 13 and 14. It's a fun little niche con (I'm on staff). I've just registered for VidCon, a convention for online video/Youtube creators and enthusiasts taking place in Anaheim CA from June 26 to 28, and will be there an extra day. It's my first time and I'm wondering if there are any other Mefites going. After some discussion I think the best place will the evening of June 29 at the House of Blues in Downtown Disney, which is accessible free of charge. That said, if you are going to Vidcon, let me know!

I'll be in Indianapolis for GenCon next week. It seems to me that there are bound to be other MeFites there, both locals and other attendees. Maybe we could try to meet up Wednesday night or Sunday morning when things are quiet, or find some time during the convention itself?

Update: Sounds like folks are up for trying to meet at the board games library area at 10. I'll try to keep this thread updated through the day with location info. I know some people like to just wander the floor for a bit when they first get in so we can still aim to reconvene at noon.----- PAXEast is March 22-24. Anyone else planning to go? It hasn't always been the most organized meet-up but I had a lot of fun with some mefites last year. If there's enough interest, I propose a meet-up on Saturday for boardgames or PC/console freeplay. The London meetups are shapin' up! Plans for Friday are here; this is the Saturday thread. Please feel free to simply show up to any/all of this fun. Let's start with the Science Museum at 1pm. We'll meet right out front, here. Then roughly about 4pm, let's head over to Taqueria for Mexican food, here. Then off to begin the pub crawl, starting at 6pm at The Slaughtered Lamb, here.

So, there's a brony convention coming up in NY on January 7th at the Hotel Pennsylvania near Penn Station. Several voice actors from the show will be there. My girlfriend and I, being HUGE NERDS, are going. Anyone else from MeFi going?
