Should we do something fun, like A Stupid Gifts Under $5 Exchange?

I still need to work up the nerve to go to one. It's sad, I know. Also, traveling at rush hour from Evanston, assuming I get out of work in Lake Forest in time. Arrgh, I will probably wait for a weekend one (and then worry too much and still not go).

Hey Glinn, it looks like there's a Metra line that goes from Evanston to Union Station in about half an hour: http://g.co/maps/fqnwk

If you can make it to Union Station at whatever time, I can pick you up and probably take you back depending on post-goat proclivities.

Glinn - all monthly meetups are on Wednesdays. There might be some kind of weekend do at some point? But I don't remember seeing any suggested.

That train goes to Ogilvie, not Union. (Not a huge difference, just worth noting.)

On the way in, assuming it's during rush, you can Purple from wherever in Evanston to Belmont, switch to Red, and take that to Grand. It's actually really convenient. (This is what I do, because I'm coming from work in Northbrook.)

It's the way back that's brutal. Gotta take the Red all the way to Howard, wait for an elusive Purple, and that'll take you wherever you need in Evanston.

But seriously: Worth the effort. I went to many Goatups before moving into the city.

Thank you for the kind and helpful info. I uh. Haven't taken a Chicago train yet. However, we're very south in Evanston and Howard is less than two miles away. The SO and I keep planning to go places on the train. I shall make it a 2011 priority to do so.
So maybe see you guys in January. Hermit-tendencies.

If we exchanged goofy 5-buck gifts, I vote we play the game where you pick a gift (order by a hat, or whomever answers a trivia question first) and can decide to keep it....OR FORCEFULLY TRADE FOR SOMEONE ELSE'S GIFT.

I've always enjoyed White Elephant games.

I, like shakespeherian, get very antsy and weird about that game (my friends laugh at me when they want to play UNO and I beg off), but I will fling CDs at everyone's head. Metaphorically.

I assume zombiestripperjesuscat will make an appearance? It's the December goatup, after all.

We could make up a whole mythology for ZSJC -- maybe he brings presents, but because he's a zombie (and a cat) they're all dead things? Wrapped in glitter?

Coming from a place where White Elephant is called Chinese Christmas, the game makes me uncomfortable, too.

Also, I will be making my gift, and would prefer to personalize it, though I suppose that's not totally necessary.

CHRISTMAS, MOTHERFUCKERS!

posted by tzikeh at 9:49 PM on November 30, 2011

Back in school there were some Christmas/Winter songs we'd sing at old folks' homes and hospitals and the like every December. Among these was "Sleigh Ride."

One of the honors of being a senior was the chance to get to wield this bad boy, which very accurately simulates the sound of a whip crack.

Because it was so wildly loud and jarring, and the old/infirmed tend to not be huge fans of wicked loud noises, it was VERY IMPORTANT that whoever used the whip crack did so sparingly. As a result, there were pretty much three times in "Sleigh Ride" when it was deemed acceptable to use it:

1. "Let's go for a sleigh riiide (whi-cha!) A wonderful sleigh riiide!"
2. "Giddy up! Giddy up! Giddy up! Let's Go! (whi cha!) Let's look at the show..."
3. "There's a birthday party at the home of Faaaar-(whi-cha!)-mer Grey."

So when I finally got my chance to use the whip crack, it ended up that we were in one of the mall-esque hallways of the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. The acoustics are pretty cathedral-esque.

And maybe it was because the anticipation of getting to use the whip crack finally came to a head, or maybe I'd just been listening to "Baby Got Back" too much (like that's possible, butts lol) but friends, I tell you, I let that whip crack fly!!!!!!!!!!

(It's really hard to represent this in text. Know that the "cha" always fell on the beat. I am a musician.)

Let's go for a sleigh riiiiide! (whi-cha!)
A wonderful sleigh riiiiide! (whi-cha!)
Come hurry a-(whi-cha!)-long with a song
In a (whi-cha!) wintery (whi-cha!)world to (whi-cha!)glide!

I was not allowed to continue using the whip crack when we moved to the ICU.

posted by BevosAngryGhost at 6:40 AM on December 7, 2011

It seems like I'm always the table growth tipping point. I walk in the door, put down my stuff, and our guy comes over and starts reassembling the tables. This has seriously happened, like, five times now. Then everyone gets to play the "whose beer is this" game while I sneakily make my move for prime central seat positioning.

Frankly, I have no idea how the tables have any organized growth on those days when I have to miss a meetup, and nothing you say can convince me that it actually happens.

But have no fear, tzikeh! I will be there tonight and your need for both table space and chocolatey things will be fulfilled.

Usually what happens is I just sit where I can and then when our normal server starts his shift, then he wrangles us into his preferred seating arrangement and hustles the tourists out of the way.
