Goat-Up

Didn't see the monthly goat-up post. Figured I'd make it. I feel like Charlie from Charlie's Angels. Nobody ever sees me, but I'm running the cabal!

Are you actually going to make it this time?
posted by Evilspork at 12:33 AM on August 27, 2011

Did you learn nothing? Never propose a goat-up, just make it so.
posted by SpiffyRob at 4:14 AM on August 27, 2011 [1 favorite]

You get three. Three goat-up postings without coming to a meetup. After that, we set traps for you around your house, tie you up, then haul your ass down under Michigan Ave, Ewok-style.

You're playing with fire here, tzikeh.

*sigh*

I'll put a reminder on my calendar and on my phone.

MAYBE I'M NOT CORPOREAL; DID YOU EVER CONSIDER THAT?

Wait, who's the smart angel? who's the pretty angel? and who's the ditsy one?

I want to be the rich client who thinks her house is haunted by my rich dead husband and one of you has to pretend to be a psychic to save me from what turns out to be my stepson gaslighting me.

"Once upon a time, there were three little MeFites who went to the Billy Goat Tavern..."

Wow, that reads a whole lot more like the beginning of a Grimm's Fairy Tale where all the MeFites get turned into CHEEZBORGERS than a parody of the opening credits of Charlie's Angels.
posted by tzikeh at 3:01 PM on August 27, 2011

I'll probably be able to make it, but later. We've got people visiting from out of town. (From Brazil! For our wedding!) They would not enjoy a Goat Up but they have little ones and will probably be back at their hotel early.
posted by hydrophonic at 7:18 AM on August 29, 2011

I mostly lurk, but I'm kind of curious about this GoatUp business (and have just left Hyde Park), so how can you all be recognized?
posted by besonders at 8:00 AM on August 29, 2011

We mostly know each other at this point. But, usually, we are seated to the left of the grill and generally the only large crowd of people there. You can search flickr for the metafilter tag, coupled with "chicago" or "billygoattavern" or "chicagocabal" or "tincc" and see some photos of us. Older meet-up threads also have photos.

Alternately, just ask for Eamon.
posted by crush-onastick at 8:10 AM on August 29, 2011

Besonders, we are invariably the group of rowdy nerds at several tables pushed together and piled high with many tiny beers, directly to the left when you walk in the door. You really can't miss us.
posted by booknerd at 8:16 AM on August 29, 2011

There is no Chicago cabal.
posted by eamondaly at 11:21 AM on August 29, 2011

Besonders, pretty much what crush and booknerd said, but if you see a glorious, planet-consuming beard, it'll be attached to eamondaly, and he's with us.
posted by BevosAngryGhost at 12:41 PM on August 29, 2011

besonders, I've never been to a GoatUp before either. We can be n00bs together!
posted by tzikeh at 1:26 PM on August 29, 2011

YES! MOAR NOOBS! Eamon's beard is getting hungry!
posted by phunniemee at 2:28 PM on August 29, 2011 [1 favorite]

"Excuse me, are you a friend of Matt Haughey?" is the usual opening gambit, if you're not sure. Or look for the table full of people with wearing glasses.
posted by hydrophonic at 2:41 PM on August 29, 2011

Since I don't wear glasses, I'll just be sitting there like this. Like they said...we're not hard to spot.
posted by phunniemee at 2:57 PM on August 29, 2011 [1 favorite]

Man, I hate it when I'm cruising through my Recent Activity and I catch a typo in one of my comments. That should be "the table full of the people with the wearing of the glasses."

Hoyvin glavin.

....and if Eamon has his way, it will later on in the evening look like this.
posted by Windigo at 6:29 PM on August 31, 2011

Be advised his beard has grown MUCH larger, as it contains the souls of all those Noobs whom asked about the Chicago Cabal.
posted by Windigo at 6:30 PM on August 31, 2011

A is for Eamon, because that's how it's pronounced.

B is for wow, there are actually a lot of people with B names! betty botter, booknerd, bibliogrrl, and baniak! But maybe "B is for BEARD" would be more appropriate, given all the beard talk we've had here so far.

E is for adamdschneider because I used the A on Eamon.

R is for SpiffyRob, because I'm saving the S.

S is for shakespeherian, even though he never comes to the meetups. Except that one time when we made Osama Bun Laden. We were just being silly...please come back, shakey! We won't make any hamburger effigies this time. (Unless you want to!)

T is for tiny beers!

U is for usernames that start with difficult letters. I, K, W, Y, Z: YOU ARE ALL SCRABBLE HEROES!

I <3 MeFiChi SO MUCH. Seriously, you people are awesome. Thanks for the alphabet shoutout, phunniemee!

I also may have accidentally had a large beer with my lunch on my work-from-home day. I will not comment on whether my blood alcohol level is currently influencing the magnitude of my display of affection.
posted by misskaz at 2:10 PM on September 1, 2011

Stick with tiny beers. Much safer.

Windigo: "....and if Eamon has his way, it will later on in the evening look like this."

Except with less Cortex, I'm guessing.

V is for Vergil and his pint-glass screwdrivers.

X is for the rating of the videos at the Bong.

I think I just pulled muscles in the back of my hands clenching my fists in anger about a work email. I need Tiny Beers, STAT.
posted by misskaz at 7:53 AM on September 7, 2011

I will actually make this one! I'm teaching a class at Loyola on Wednesday nights, so I can walk over after my office hour is done. See you a little after 8!
posted by me3dia at 8:29 AM on September 7, 2011

I'm now a "maybe"-- I have to drive from Evanston to downtown to home beforehand and there's a pretty good chance I'll be too burned out to go out again. I definitely won't be there before 8pm.
posted by eamondaly at 9:20 AM on September 7, 2011

I'm with misskaz. Having just been slapped around for doing something (I'm still not clear why I was being yelled at), I could very much use a Tiny Beer. Or five.

Can we not just start drinking at lunch?
posted by BevosAngryGhost at 10:46 AM on September 7, 2011

I'll be there not too long after 5.
posted by evisceratordeath at 11:04 AM on September 7, 2011

I'll be there at 5, as always.
posted by Windigo at 11:11 AM on September 7, 2011

I'll be there on the later side - 7 to 8, probably.

posted by misskaz at 12:47 PM on September 7, 2011

Wow -- I only hang out with you folks once a month every couple of months (at most) -- how can all of our "Work fucking sucks today" cycles be in sync?

I'd forgotten about this Meet-up until just now (thanks Google Calendar!) but hope to see you later.

I'm at the bar across the street because I couldn't stand to be at work for a minute longer. Will head over to the goat after this beer.
posted by misskaz at 2:42 PM on September 7, 2011

As I am hopefully to be grar-y about work, must tend to pre-interview prep tonight. I wish I could drink tiny beers, but I shouldn't.

Enjoy a tiny beer for me!
posted by readery at 2:55 PM on September 7, 2011

Well I was thinking I'm going to make it, but today we're just relaxing and enjoying being married today. It's the first day we've had to ourselves, and work (grar) starts tomorrow.

So, obviously, I didn't make the GoatUp. I did sincerely mean for this to be my first GoatUp.

I don't know why I'm sharing this with all-but-strangers, but yesterday I found a lump in my breast, and wasn't exactly up for socializing.

I've got an appointment with my OB-GYN in 40 minutes. I'll let you all know what's going on as soon as I know.

I hope to make the Pequod's meet-up.

Thanks, guys - just found out that my mammogram is the morning of the Pequod's meetup.

So, either I won't be there at all, or I'll be there DRINKING A WHOLE LOT IN CELEBRATION.

Let's hope for Door #2.
posted by tzikeh at 3:24 PM on September 8, 2011

Oh gosh, tzikeh, that really sucks. I hope everything turns out fine, and that we can all have celebratory Pequod's together. Fingers crossed for healthy boobies!
