Kim's Scotch Meetup
posted June 23, 2011 12:06 AM   RSS | iCal | +googleCal

Fri July 1 at 7:00 PM, Zophi's House
Oakland, CA, USA (Map & Directions)
iamkimiam is in town for a week and a half and she'd like to drink some scotch. The last scotch meetup was well received, why don't we do it again?
At Zophi's apartment. 7 PM.

It'd be great if people brought some food to share!

Still at the bar crew seems excited about the idea. I, for one, will cook for the thing, provided it is not on a Tuesday or Sunday.

Awesome! Let's! Make! This! Happen!

(I can do any weeknight next week..a Friday night scotch meetup might be a wild way to go out, but I may hate myself come Saturday morning off to Colorado.)

I am all over this idea. Also, down for when/where ever's convenient for everyone.

I'll make my pan-friend potatoes and olives. That or skordalia.
posted by Pecinpah at 10:32 AM on June 23, 2011

Yes, yes everyone is happy to come to this meetup.
The real question is: Who is going to host it?

Things to consider:
1) This is not a wild party! It's well-behaved adults sipping fine spirits.
2) We totally didn't trash aubilenon's apartment.
3) At the end, the host is left holding an armful of scotch.

Thomasbrobber and I are happy to host- as a last ditch choice- we certainly have the space for it, but 1) we're in the east bay and 2) we're like a mile from Bart. We're at 2nd and Brush in Oakland.

Otherwise we will just come and enjoy scotch.
posted by Zophi at 3:35 PM on June 23, 2011

I am not part of the east bay contingent, but babby spoke for me since I was on BART too. In any case, this is awesome and shall be even more epic than the last one. Sadly, I do not have a suitable venue at my disposal.

posted by chatongriffes at 11:25 AM on June 24, 2011 [1 favorite]

I will wear a tux if I can get at least one other person to do the same.

Because if you're the only guy in a tux at a party, you'd better be serving the drinks.
posted by danny the boy at 12:01 PM on June 24, 2011 [1 favorite]

Sadly, I only own the tuxedo shirt, bowtie, and cummerbund, and it's a bit short notice to call my old acquaintance at the tux rental shop and ask for another super-discounted rental. Even if no one else does it, you should still wear your tux and you can buttle.

We could go for a Boston Legal Balcony theme though, which fits nicely with scotch.
posted by zachlipton at 1:31 PM on June 24, 2011

I will wear a fabulous gown if I am not the only one. Alternately, I've been wanting an excuse to haunt vintage stores for a tux.
posted by mollymayhem at 2:13 PM on June 24, 2011

So it's looking like this will not be a BART-friendly meetup. Are most people cool with that?

Zophi, what's it like to walk from your place to BART? Is it pretty safe to do it drunk, at night?
posted by ryanrs at 3:19 PM on June 24, 2011

Personally I'm fine with walking a mile from BART to the meetup. I mean, I'll already be walking a mile from my house to BART.

(My house is not meetup-friendly, in case you're wondering -- due to our landlord's desire to make piles of money off of us, what would be a good-sized space for this has been carved up into bedrooms. And they're not even my bedroom. So unless my housemates want what are, to them, random people from the Internet drinking scotch on their beds, it wouldn't work.)
posted by madcaptenor at 3:27 PM on June 24, 2011

Madcaptenor, it's not the distance, it's the neighborhood. But I don't know enough about the area to say it's definitely unsafe.
posted by ryanrs at 3:47 PM on June 24, 2011

yeah, I don't know the neighborhood that well either. But some people are more walking-phobic than I am.

Zophi, what's it like to walk from your place to BART? Is it pretty safe to do it drunk, at night?

To be honest we can't speak to whether or not it's safe but only that it's more industrial than residential. With that in mind we wouldn't anticipate any troublesome foot traffic or automobile traffic. I can comfortably say that I wouldn't have a problem walking it with a partner or group.
posted by ThomasBrobber at 4:06 PM on June 24, 2011

Molly, I will seriously wear a fab gown with you. Also, if there are any 4-6's out there, I have gowns and cocktail dresses to share. (I'm sure you're all really surprised by that.) Must be ok with some pretty serious cleavage.

I'd offer my apartment, but we are 2 miles from North Berkeley Bart AND industrial... At least Zophi et al are only 1 mile...

We are happy to re-extend our offer of our place. We have tons of space and a huge kitchen. We've been sort of weirdly non-committal because we just moved in. Our place is like 1/3 of a mile from Jack London Square, and is equidistant from both the West Oakland and 12th St. Bart stations. We do have cats, if that's an issue for anyone.

It's sounding like this is turning into a pretty dressy affair, so if I can make it over there I'll be wearing my kilt (I'll have to BART it, as I'll already be in the grip of the grape). Here's to hoping that's not too hokey for a MeFi Meet-up.

I'll be as swanky as I can, given my broke ass and lack of formal wear in my suitcase (I do have heels and a dress I wore to a wedding last weekend, so there's that). I'll also try to bring something cooked or bought and pre-cooked. And to complete my trifecta of loseryness, could I possibly trouble somebody for a ride to the party? I'm catsitting over at Lake Merritt, right near the Lucky's grocery (I'd bring the cats to the party, but I can only fit one in my purse at a time).

That was fantastic.
Thanks, everyone, for bringing whisky and excellent foods. Salsa, ribs, pork buns, Cowgirl Creamery cheeses and bread, pita and hummus, and a great couscous dessert. And extraordinary thanks to Zophi and ThomasBrobber for having us all over. And I do mean all over.

Big thanks to the hosts and generous folks.

So we could get to be first and second for number of comments in a meet-up thread?!?

It's good to have goals.

I am so sad that I missed this meetup. Please can we do it again when I'm in town?

I feel like everytime I've ever used the word "grand" in the past was undeserved, but this truly was a grand evening. Thank you so much to ryanrs, zophi and thomasbrobber for making this happen, and thanks to everyone else for always making the drive up worth the effort. Until next time, Kim!
