I think I've missed one since I moved here? It was winter and I was very sick and I had not yet imprinted on Eamon like a baby duckling. Don't turn me into the Feds.

Seeing as I've been here 10 months and I started going right away...damn. I suppose this is why some of you have graduated from "internet people" to, dare I say, "friends."

Hey, Miss Botter, if you actually come through on having a party this Friday it'll be an official Mefi Meet because it has at least two Mefites there. Provided I make it, my Logan Square Booty Call (LSBC?) who lives two blocks away from you is currently in California and I therefore have to "drink reasonably" and "bike home responsibly" instead of getting to be all "HEY WHO WANTS A DRUNK GIRL SLEEPING IN THEIR BED I BET IT IS YOU."

I am willing to come eat your tacos even if I don't get laid, though.

"drink reasonably" and "bike home responsibly"

For what it's worth, CUI is way, way funnier and less sad-making than DUI, so I'm not sure why this would have to be. Admittedly, my perspective is one of someone who's gotten a decent amount of amusement out of watching drunk people try to ride their bikes. The people actually doing the falling over/running into things might feel differently.

As an aspiring bike kid and lush, I bike in varying levels of intoxication pretty often. I have found I enjoy myself more and get near-murked a lot less when I'm at the "faster and looser but still obeying the rules of the road and riding in a straight line" level of tipsy and not the "weaving through the bike lane and running reds without checking traffic" level of wicked shit faced.

If you would like to laugh at my dumbassery, please accept this well-worn anecdote.

Eamon himself is mortal, but his beard, like the Dalai Lama, will live forever through many, many reincarnations[1].

...and had shaved his beard cleanly off?
posted by Windigo at 6:33 AM on July 14, 2010

This topic has long been of interest to me, so I believe I can shed some light on that question. A manuscript in the vaults at the Vatican--corroborated by a tablet I found (and subsequently lost through a series of...misadventures) in Iran--suggests that the Beard is a sort of quasi-hyperdimensional symbiote that has bonded with a series of hosts over the millenia and may, in fact, be in some way outside of time. In fact, further study suggests that (due to modern humanity's fascination with villains and antiheroes) that some part of this truth may have filtered into pop culture and become the inspiration for Venom in the Spider-Man mythos, and perhaps even Matt Wagner's Grendel, albeit in a more abstract form. The upshot of this is that even if he shaved the Beard, only its external manifestation would be thereby removed, and the essence would remain bound to him, unseen. It would, of course, grow back eventually, in a recapitulation of the corn-god myth that it may also have served as the inspiration for. As the Catechism of the Bearding Way states, "The roots go deep."

I am beginning to wonder what the REAL secret to the Golden Pyramid House is. All this time I thought it was Eamon that wanted to organize a little road trip to see it.

Now I wonder if it has, in actuality, been the Beard orchestrating events...pushing us all towards a future, an event, NAY A RECKONING we've never even considered, let alone can possibly imagine.

I just remembered a drunken plan Adam and I hatched while tipsily discussing threesomes and monster cocks over drinks at The Southern!

The Southern offers both a family style fried chicken dinner and cocktails by the punch bowl, making it an excellent spot for somewhat-fancy gluttonous gorging for a group.

FRIED CHICKEN DINNER

house made buttermilk biscuits, collard greens, mashed potatoes, pan gravy, black eyed peas, hot sauce, honey mustard. Must be reserved 48 hours in advance, parties of 6-10

$22.00/per person

Because we'd need a definitive headcount it wouldn't so much be an auxiliary meet where everyone and their mom is invited to pop in whenever so much as an "Adam and I want to eat fried chicken so we're going to pull from our group of mutual friends until we have 6-10 people who also want to eat fried chicken."

I'll bring this up again at Pequod's to see who's interested but I wanted to get the gears in people's heads turning and their mouths salivating.
posted by Juliet Banana at 6:48 AM on July 20, 2010

I've been wanting to go to the Southern since it was the Chaise Lounge.

posted by eamondaly at 9:22 AM on July 20, 2010

Who said you were invited, jerk face? The funny thing is I'm throwing a Juke Joint themed party in a couple of weeks that will mostly showcase fried chicken, biscuits, and pie but I still really want to try The Southern's chicken dinner.

PUNCHBOWLS $56
Pours 10-15 Cocktails

Planter's Punch
Spiced Rum, Brandy, Peach Schnapps, Sweet Tea, Lemon Juice

[editor's note: I have had drinks containing peach schapps at The Southern and whew that is some syrupy-sweet overload)

Kentucky Lemonade
Bourbon, Lemonade, Sweet Tea

Magnolias
Champagne, Gran Marnier, Orange Juice

So if we have 6 people and everyone's drinking it'll be $31.33+tip per person, if we have 10 people it'll be $27.60+tip but you also might have to deal with me trying to steal more punch than everyone else.

If anyone is down for fried chicken but not booze (who are these people and why are they hanging out with us) then that is fine, as well.

I guess I'm just trying to get people interested, we'll see if anyone at Pequod's is in and then set up a thread once a date is agreed upon. Fried chicken for life.

, if there's some brodouche at Smart Bar tonight bellowing DUBSTEP, PLAY DUBSTEP at the DJ can you punch him in the face for me?

There won't be that many brodouches. People might come downstairs from the Faint. But they'd be keeblerdouches?

(I have no idea who is playing but there is always a douche bag bellowing DUBSTEP at the DJ)

I have never seen this happen. Not there, anyway. HOWEVER. A couple months ago, a girl came to the disco night some friends of mine do there every Sunday and told them that they would "bring down the house" if they played some Bieber in the middle of their gay-ass disco set(s).

We LOL'd.

As far as tonight: Nate Manic (friend + talent buyer for SMRT BR) is playing, and also Zombie Disco Squad. Who are neither zombies, nor disco, but are good enough that I will forgive them these two failings. ... Though it occurs to me now to wonder if you can be a "squad" with just 2 members?

Will be lots of tech-house and some other things. Should be fun! Tomorrow night's a bigger deal though. Azari + III with some friends of mine opening. I will be there at about 10:15 yelling at the friend of mine who opens to play some Bieber. So, at least someone will be getting inappropriate "requests" yelled at them this weekend.

AAAAAAAAAh.
I have no idea how to get there. I am so lost. Will someone who can help memail me and I'll send my phone number? Stupid Palmer House charges something horrible like $20 for internet.

You can have my number, but you won't be able to call me for about 20 minutes (still at work).
posted by adamdschneider at 2:24 PM on July 23, 2010

If that was you who just called, I couldn't pick it up because I'm on the phone with a client. I'll call you in 15 minutes when I leave. :-)

Oh, whoops. Didn't see that before I called. Thanks Adam.
I just am trying to figure out what kind of transit to take, I guess. I am totally used to other cities, but it's been since, oh, 1996ish since I've been in Chicago.

Well, the Brown Line comes the closest. You can get on it downtown at Adams and Wabash. I'll call you.

FYI, Stew and I exchanged a few messages and I think she's cabbing it there.

That was the upshot of our phone conversation. Meanwhile, I am waiting on a late Metra.

Okay we can't make it. We were helping a friend prepare for moving to NYC and then she wanted to take us out, so.

Sorry, folks. Some shockingly unspeakable gastrointestinal issues derailed me. See you in a couple weeks.

Lovely time as always. Posting mostly to Get it on public record that I owe a fellow radiohead fan a few bucks/drinks/whatevs.

See you kids at The Goat.

PS. How have I lived 2 miles from Pequod's for 3 years and never eaten there? So tasty.
posted by sparkletone at 9:38 PM on July 23, 2010

The bill got paid without argument, tip and all. If anyone owes Pequod's debt I hear churros are a good way to work it off.

Fabulous pizza! Great company! Thanks ChiMeFites.

I don't have Pequod's debt I have MeFite debt. Which is probably both better and worse than Pequod's debt.
