Chicon7 EATS PIZZA.

Wed August 29 at 7:00 PM, Pequod's
2207 N Clybourn Ave, Chicago, IL, USA (Map & Directions)
Chicon 7, this year's World Science Fiction Convention, is being held in Chicago August 30 through September 3, 2012. Mefites! Let's hang out!!
The con itself is being held at the Hyatt Regency downtown, but the city is our oyster! I live here, and would LOVE to get something together for visiting Mefites. Let's do this thing.

ETA - Pizza! Pequod's! WOOO.

When the date gets closer and we have a better headcount, we will make a reservation.

I'll be there! I need to get plane tickets this week - I'm flexible on whether we do it before, during, or after the con right now, but once I get the tickets I'll be nailed down a little further.

I won't be going to this thing (cough nerds cough), but I'm always up for meeting new mefites!

I wasn't planning on attending (but that was more out of 'lack of awareness' than anti-nerd bias*) but would also be up for any sort of meetup related activity.

Also, after a quick browse of the site, I cannot recommend much more in Chicago than a nighttime trip to the Adler Planetarium. One of my favorite spots in the city.

Dudes, Jscalzi's worldcon member signup story "Dave and Liz and Chicago save the world" is an awesome story. And I'm not just saying that because I'm Dave, and my girlfriend is Liz, and we live in Chicagoland (which means a suburb of Chicago, obviously).

My girlfriend read the story aloud during the long car ride from Salt Lake City to Yellowstone to a car full of Chicago nerdy people, and we had a great time guessing the next Chicago-y thing that would save the world.

Lou Malnati's has a weird overfermented funk in their dough, like instead of yeast they leaven their crust with a fetid alien spore. Pequod's crust is crowned with a black lace of caramelized parmasan. I'm not saying one is better than the other, but I'm saying you're a bad person if you prefer Malnati's. Sorry.

I work downtown, live in Avondale, and I'm a bike commuter and single dog mom. This means that I've stopped doing to Goat Ups, because after I work a full shift downtown I'm not making a 14 mile round trip to walk my dog just so I can make the last drunkest hour of the meetup. However, I will happily show up (late) to events that are within 15 minutes of my house and involve pizza because duh.

I may very well bring my parents to the meetup, because eating deep-dish is required but I can't do it twice or my intestines will kill me. They are amiable people and I'm always amused to haul them out at work events.

Anybody up for an informal early month meetup to give me the lay of the land (I am aware that for the most part the lay is flat having grown up on the other side of one of those truly great lakes) and tips on avoiding the lead based air pollution that seems to be flying about lately?
posted by srboisvert at 10:32 AM on July 14, 2012

Hmm, when do you arrive on the 1st? We have a monthly meetup on the first Wednesday of the month at 6PM, which in August is the 1st. If you can't make that one, I would make a proposed meetup post asking the same question.

Also, you avoid lead in the air by ducking.

Also, anyone out there in mefi land who hasn't seen Lars and the Real Girl should go watch Lars and the Real Girl.

It's actually the only thing I've seen with Ryan Gosling in it that wasn't Goosebumps or Are You Afraid of the Dark, so every time I see the HEY GIRL meme I just assume he's talking to a sex doll.

My constant Ryan Gosling referent is Half Nelson although at some point that will smush into Drive in my head and I will worry for all inner-city children.

Jesus, he was in Goosebumps. And here my constant young Ryan Gosling referent was his turn as an embryo Kevin Sorbo in Young Hercules.
