MeFi IRL

After proposing and then totally failing to make it to a Helsinki meet up 2 years ago, I'd like to try again. Thursday (15th August) seems like a good plan, food? drink? somewhere kid friend as I am attending with a kid and a teen. I am from Dublin but the convention is in a part of town that basically didn't exist when I immigrated in the mid-90s, so I don't have a strong feeling about where, though somewhere near the Point Square part of the con might work?

Metafiltroids daisyk and Zarkonnen are currently in Helsinki for Worldcon 75. Surely we are not the only Metafiltonites here? Let's meet up at Olutravintola Nurkka, a pub a few hundred metres away from the site!

Worldcon is in Helsinki this year (http://www.worldcon.fi) and I'm bringing resident 11 year old. Dates are 9-13 August though I think we are arriving on the 8th. Anyone else planning to be there? I've been to 2 Worldcons before and generally the problem I've found is I have no problem talking to new people but meeting up with people I already know can be difficult if we haven't made concrete plans as Worldcon is just so big. While I am all about the sitting and drinking, that probably won't be very 11 yo friendly so I am open to other suggestions - maybe a picnic or walk near the convention centre? Or an evening meal?

Any mefites going to be in the KC area for MidAmericon II this week and interested in making an IRL happen? Edit: I'm going to go ahead and throw something on the calendar - if it turns out this time/day is especially bad, we adjust as needed. I'll be around most of the day on Friday for sure if we wanted to do something during the day instead.

I think it would be really cool for all MeFites who will be at Sasquan, the 73rd World Science Fiction Convention, to get together. I propose the District Bar on Friday August 21 for early dinner because a) it's a mile walk from the con so we can work up an appetite, b) the menu looks good, and c) I know I'll certainly need a break from the con at that point. I'll be in London from Wednesday 13th until Tuesday 19th for the Worldcon and I'm sure there will be more MeFites there. Is there any desire for a meetup at or near the Con? I'd be available on Wednesday evening or at some point during the con itself.
