May 25-28, 2018: WisCon is an annual feminist science fiction/fantasy/literature/media convention and this year's Guests of Honor are Saladin Ahmed and Tananarive Due. WisCon features smart, funny conversations, interesting sessions you can sign up to participate in, great accessibility and affordability, and more; here's more on the environs, the con, the crowd, other attractions, etc. There are discussion panels, structured activities, parties and events, $1 childcare, gaming, readings, poetry, a dealer's room to buy stuff, a Con Suite with an array of snacks, a Member Assistance Fund for people who need financial help to attend, safer spaces for people of color and for trans/genderqueer people, and a dedicated Quiet Place where you can catch your breath and decompress. September 26

I'm giving a public lecture on NW Coast Archaeology at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) on October 3rd at 7.45 (This link says 7.00 but there is an AGM first, I think). It's free and open to the public. If you come, be sure to say hi. I'm also in Portland the next day (October 4) and if anyone was interested in meeting for an after-work beer that would be fun - but I'm staying near Gladstone/Jennings Lodge so don't know how feasible that is, I don't know Portland at all.

Ride with us from London to Amsterdam from 12-17 September, and support a good cause or two! Two (optional) days in the UK, two in Belgium, and two in the Netherlands (last year's route). Never thought you could do a long-distance ride before? Well here's a gentle one! [more inside]

Penguicon is a combination scifi convention and open source conference that's been running annually for 15 years. I'm a guest of honor at Penguicon 2017 (my schedule), as is MeFi's own Cory Doctorow (schedule) and Ada Palmer (schedule) whose work's been discussed on MetaFilter several times. Other speakers include MeFi's own John Scalzi. [more inside]

February 28

Hi! This is super short notice but I have 2 extra tickets to the Nebraska vs. Minnesota basketball game on Thursday at 6pm. One of the ticket holders has to work and the other is staying in Colombia for an extra few days. Would one or two of you be interested in coming along? They're not the best seats and you'll have to put up with me rooting for Nebraska, but they'd be free! Post here or memail me if you're interested. -Ian

A protest will be held in Paris this Saturday 19 November. Fellow MeFites who want to come: we could all find each other once there. If someone knows the area well (Ecole Militaire) and can suggest a specific spot, that would be great! Be sure to join the Facebook event here. [more inside]

Heya cobbers. We were considering doing a Pokemon meetup and catching of monsters. Lollusc is late to the party and banished to Canberra for a few days so we must soothe her pain upon return. And for the love of dogonthemoon, someone has to help me take down msfish. ( blue team is bad, m'kay.) Open to date , time and venue suggestions although Usyd isn't bad and may be centrally accessible. Can be day with kiddoes or night with boozoes. (Fridays are out as it's often Chaiday Night at my place. To which MeFites have a standing invitation. ) We can all set lures in close proximity and enjoy the sprinkle of soft falling pink bits.. A biology book club I'm part of in Toronto is going to be starting Freeman and Herron's Evolutionary Analysis. We read a chapter of a textbook a month (more or less), and answer the end-of-chapter questions. We also try to find a paper related to the chapter to discuss. Everyone is welcome; when we did Albert's Molecular Biology of the Cell, we had everyone from people who had zero biology background to biology Ph.D.s attend. Sometimes we stick to the subject of the chapter, and sometimes the discussion is wide-ranging. It's held at Toronto's Hacklab, which strives to be an inclusive and welcoming space. [more inside]
