September 3

A very low-key social partner dance: easy to try for newbies; traditional energetic as well as modern gentle music for the partner dances; an open-role dance for those who like it. From 7:20-8pm we teach a free lesson for *total beginners* that will get you through Walking That Counts as Dancing, and give you a try at either rotary waltz or polka, which are gloriously whirly. You don't need to dress up or come with a partner. [more inside]

August 24

DragonCon 2018 is nigh and the schedule app update is out. Past years have proven that an actual designated time & place for a mefi meetup is logistically unlikely, but, just wanted to open a thread for roll call/friend code exchange/panel postmortems, etc. [more inside]

July 29

I'm going to be co-facilitating a couple of sessions at this year's Fast Forward, a three day festival for the anti-authoritarian left that runs from 17th-19th of August. Tickets are between 35-80 depending on ability to pay. It's going to be pretty cool. Food is included, as is childcare (kids go free!). If you're feeling a bit down about the state of politics at the moment, this is a great place to feel hopeful. [more inside]

July 5

Hi! After discussion about the DSA in the politics megathread and some enthusiastic PMs, someone suggested we make an IRL event (thanks bilabial!). This is pretty much what it says on the tin. I've never been to this working group before, so I don't totally know what to expect, but I would be happy to meet up with various MeFites there. This is the DSA's description of the event.

May 18

Energetic social dancing, not particularly dress-up, beginners very welcome -- the lesson at 7:20-8 only assumes you can walk, and count to six -- we dance with each other so you don't need to come with a partner. [more inside]

Two world-class dance teachers teaching mazurka clandestina, which is suitable for dancing in a plaza to a plaintive violin at dusk*. We will be practicing inside and with the lights on though. More at https://www.broadwaywaltz.com/. [more inside]

May 25-28, 2018: WisCon is an annual feminist science fiction/fantasy/literature/media convention and this year's Guests of Honor are Saladin Ahmed and Tananarive Due. September 26

I'm giving a public lecture on NW Coast Archaeology at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) on October 3rd at 7.45 (This link says 7.00 but there is an AGM first, I think). It's free and open to the public. If you come, be sure to say hi. I'm also in Portland the next day (October 4) and if anyone was interested in meeting for an after-work beer that would be fun - but I'm staying near Gladstone/Jennings Lodge so don't know how feasible that is, I don't know Portland at all.

Ride with us from London to Amsterdam from 12-17 September, and support a good cause or two! Two (optional) days in the UK, two in Belgium, and two in the Netherlands (last year's route). Never thought you could do a long-distance ride before? Well here's a gentle one! [more inside]

April 20

Penguicon is a combination scifi convention and open source conference that's been running annually for 15 years. I'm a guest of honor at Penguicon 2017 (my schedule), as is MeFi's own Cory Doctorow (schedule) and Ada Palmer (schedule) whose work's been discussed on MetaFilter several times. Other speakers include MeFi's own John Scalzi. [more inside]

February 28

Hi! This is super short notice but I have 2 extra tickets to the Nebraska vs. Minnesota basketball game on Thursday at 6pm. One of the ticket holders has to work and the other is staying in Colombia for an extra few days. Would one or two of you be interested in coming along? They're not the best seats and you'll have to put up with me rooting for Nebraska, but they'd be free! Post here or memail me if you're interested. -Ian
