Who wants dim sum?
Today's FPP about dumplings has given me a craving. I know there's been some talk in the past of a dim sum meetup, but I don't think it's actually happened. Who's in?

ETA: Note that the location has changed! Gold Mountain's gone out of business, so we're going to Canton instead.

Yes.

Definitely there. I'm gone from the 25-30th, so I'll keep my fingers crossed that isn't the PERFECT time for everyone.

Well, yes. How about earlier in the day on New Year's Eve?
posted by eugenen at 1:38 PM on December 19, 2011

I'll be gone from the 29th to the 12th, but I'll make the next thing if you guys decide to do it then.

If this is today or after the 29th, I'd love to be a part of it.

I would love to do this!

I love dim sum, but eating them is fraught with peril, since so many have shellfish and I'm allergic. So....maybe.

The wife and I recently went to Yank Sing. She doesn't do shellfish, I don't do meat, and my (Chinese) dad doesn't do anything but.

We all left happy and full.

Bonus: it's near muni, BART, and parking is super easy.

So it seems like either the 31st or the 1st work best. I like the idea of a New Year's feast with Mefites. Anybody been out for dim sum on New Year's Day? Are places packed?
posted by asterix at 8:36 PM on December 19, 2011

I am pro-dim-sum but fly out tomorrow morning and come back on the 3rd. So you'll have to do it without me.
posted by madcaptenor at 8:45 PM on December 19, 2011

Clearly we'll have to have another one of these later in January, too.
posted by asterix at 9:13 PM on December 19, 2011

Caveat re: Yank Sing: Ten years ago, my mom, step-dad and I managed to rack up an $80 dim sum bill, which is a feat never remotely replicated at any other dim sum restaurant.

(Translation: by dim sum standards it's pricey)
posted by small_ruminant at 9:24 PM on December 19, 2011

What about Gold Mountain. I've eaten there before and it was awesome. They can seat really large groups easily.
posted by babbyʼ); Drop table users; -- at 9:38 PM on December 19, 2011

I might or might not be able to join this, but as a non-crustacean-eater, I can say that if you have enough people in your crew, you're usually fine. (A Cantonese speaker is a bonus--you're in the clear then. I speak only so-so Mandarin.)

Yank Sing is shiny and tasty but way overpriced unless you want to pay for comfort and convenience. I think we paid a similar rate for pts and me and my husband some years ago. :|

I love dim sum. I'll be back in SF on the 27th, any day after that is good.

Cityview is excellent. Smack between the financial district and Chinatown.
posted by eugenen at 9:36 AM on December 20, 2011

I'm pretty much always in favor of dim sum.

I'll be back in town on the 28th, so anything after that works for me.

And yeah, Yank Sing is a rip-off.

I am in favor of dim sum, comfort and convenience. Money is no object. Dates may be a factor.

Yank Sing is crazy overpriced. One place we've gone lately is the Canton. It's pretty good, and close to transit (Folsom around 2nd). Not sure about the crowdedness though.
posted by jasper411 at 11:14 AM on December 20, 2011

Yeah, I've been to Canton many times and it's never been crowded. OTOH I've been to Canton many times and would kind of like to try someplace new, so I'm leaning towards Gold Mountain.

If I make this for the 1st, will people show? Later in the day, obviously, so folks can sleep off their hangovers a bit.
posted by asterix at 11:24 AM on December 20, 2011

I'm a maybe along with rtha. There's rarely much I can eat at dimsum, probably moreso these days. But I'd like to see everyone!
posted by gingerbeer at 12:01 PM on December 20, 2011

I'm gone between the 30th and the 3rd. I support the idea of multiple iterations of dim sum.
posted by casarkos at 12:02 PM on December 20, 2011

Yum, dim sum! For me, anything after the 30th works -- and while I'd love to try Yank Sing, I've also heard that it's absurdly expensive for dim sum.
posted by polexa at 12:34 PM on December 20, 2011

I'm going to fess up and admit I've never had dim sum. I KNOW. So I'm interested!
posted by grapesaresour at 12:46 PM on December 20, 2011

I'd show on the first.
posted by eugenen at 2:08 PM on December 20, 2011

DO IT! Make it for the first. Hangovers can't win over dim sum.

We've confirmed that Gold Mountain is open on 1 January?

Hadn't even occurred to me that they wouldn't be. I'd be shocked if they weren't, but I'll call tomorrow to make sure.
posted by asterix at 10:01 PM on December 21, 2011

Gold Mountain is excellent and also crazy busy. Very vibrant noisy scene, a gazillion carts roving by, great food, though be prepared to wait for a table.
posted by jasper411 at 9:13 AM on December 22, 2011

Well this is problematic... apparently Gold Mountain has gone out of business! So far we have Cityview, Canton, and Yank Sing as alternatives. Any preferences between the three?
posted by asterix at 10:41 AM on December 27, 2011

I prefer NOT Yank Sing. It's too expensive.

I haven't been to the other two.
posted by small_ruminant at 3:08 PM on December 27, 2011

Canton's like a block and a half from my house.

But I'm a vegetarian and a picky one at that, plus 1:00pm is pretty early to wake up, so even if it's so close I'm only a maybe.
posted by aubilenon at 9:46 PM on December 27, 2011

Okay, Canton it is.
posted by asterix at 1:14 PM on December 28, 2011

I like Canton's location better. But I'm a maybe right now due to potentially having to attend New Year's Day festivities with my better half.
posted by spitefulcrow at 7:40 PM on December 28, 2011

Okay I'll try and roll my sleep schedule over by then!

I'm so envious...I'm on the other side of the country and there's no dim sum in Chattanooga. So I'm making jeri come. She's lovely! Give here a hearty wave from me!
posted by The Wrong Kind of Cheese at 9:14 AM on December 30, 2011

I love Yank Sing, even though it's pricey. But I've never tried Canton, and I'm all for giving it try.
posted by jeri at 9:46 AM on December 30, 2011

Most probably coming because I miss you guys. But there's no telling what crazy things will happen on NYE, so I'm hesitant to make any promises.
posted by chatongriffes at 12:21 PM on December 30, 2011

well, bummer, i can't make this meetup cuz i'm workin' tomorrow from 1-6 :-(
but if anyone feels like coffee after dimsum, drop in and see me at Dogpatch cafe, at Third St & 20th!

Bailing because I'm heading over to Fremont to eat New Year's Day lunch with the boy.

Sad that I'm missing out. There should be a repeat for this one.

We also have a sick cat, so we're sadly a last minute no.

posted by politikitty at 12:50 PM on January 1, 2012

I ended up doing NYE out of the city, and won't be back in time. Clearly we're going to need a repeat.

I was listening to covers of that song on Spotify on my way home. These two were pretty good, and they also had this compelling rendition from Swedish Idol.
