Wed December 1 at 5:30 PM, Billy Goat Tavern
430 N Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL, USA (Map & Directions)
The Monthly Drunkening approaches. On the one hand, there will be no reporters or random gawkers. On the other, we will be responsible for our own sizzle. I think we can handle it.

I finally have a job with regular hours and think I can make it there by 6:15ish. What do I look for as I have never been to a meetup before?
posted by Uncle at 9:09 AM on November 22, 2010

I'll probably be overdressed, as I have a charity thing I'm supposed to go to as well that night.

We're usually on the left-hand side of the room, in the middle of a random cluster of tables, checking our mobile devices. Metafilter + Chicago at Flickr brings up a lot of our faces, if that's useful.

Just say you're a friend of Eamon's and if someone at the table hits you with his shoe or tells you you're in a safe place, you've found us.

I love the Billy Goat! Please have a cheezborger for this former Chicagoan.

By the way, thanks for posting, crush. I was totally going to do this today, but look at you! I hope everyone remembers... with no PAYNE in October, I'm worried we're losing that loving feeling.

Sidenote: A couple of weekends back, I went with friends to the Goat on a Saturday because they were visiting from out of town and wanted to go someplace "real." It was NUTS how thickly the Goat folks lay on the schtick on weekends! I'm feel so privileged knowing that they trust us Wednesday regulars and don't bother wasting their A game on us.

Also: Will I still have access to Eamon's shoe, for hitting, if he's not there?
posted by SpiffyRob at 1:20 PM on November 22, 2010

Did I hit someone with a shoe? I don't remember that.
posted by eamondaly at 8:38 PM on November 22, 2010

Maybe it hasn't happened yet. Adam?
posted by SpiffyRob at 5:58 AM on November 23, 2010

Actually, I did not mean *Eamon* would hit you with a shoe. Just that *someone* *might* or, you know, another possible outcome was that you'd be welcomed with a tiny beer and open arms.

I think this month I'll be in charge of getting home to take care of the dog so my better half can finally go to a meet-up. Be nice to him, and make sure he drinks enough to make it worth my while.
posted by booknerd at 8:12 AM on November 23, 2010

I knew what you meant, crush, but I was running with the alternate reading and I'm glad I was able to get Eamon on board. Mostly because I don't want him (or anyone) to hit me with his (Eamon's) shoe, but now that the cat's out of the bag, I fear my plan has backfired.
posted by SpiffyRob at 11:22 AM on November 23, 2010

Whew, I have a complex about not making sense. Maybe we should just hit Eamon with a shoe and move on to something more interesting.

CC? Cash Cow?
Much work anticipated next week, but i should break away for tiny beers. They are so redemptive and restoring.

There is no "Cheezborger, Cheezborger!" - except on weekends, apparently.

There is a Cardboard Cutout of Han Solo in my parents' attic. (I won the coin flip after the video store closed down and was giving its stuff away, so my friend Gabe got stuck with the Mace Windu one. Burn.)

Spiffy! You are once again MY HERO. Also, at my father's birthday dinner this year (he's in his late 60's now), he & mom were discussing what age that would have preferred to stop getting older. And dad picked his age around the time I started high school. So I mentioned that that was when all my friends thought he looked like Harrison Ford. I think that is probably the best birthday present I ever got my dad. I suspect he always wished he was Han Solo. Or possibly the Stainless Steel Rat.

Bites: Working the day after Thanksgiving.
Bites Hard: When the site appears to not be up to handling Black Friday traffic, let alone Cyber Monday traffic.
Gums Gently: Realizing it's the crappy Endeca server fucking it up for the people that's in the streets, and we can just throw some hardware at the problem in hopes of making it to Tuesday.

At least nobody else is in the office to bug me!

Continuing my grand theme of becoming way too busy for Mefi Meets, I will be drinking Malort in a divey bowling alley during this meetup.
posted by Juliet Banana at 12:05 PM on November 26, 2010

Hah, Endeca. I got trained on that but I left that job before actually having to work on it in production. Best of luck.
posted by evisceratordeath at 12:21 PM on November 26, 2010

We thankfully had some old servers in our farm that we hadn't decommed, so we've now got double the Endeca servers for Monday. I'm cautiously optimistic that if something breaks, it won't be that.

JB, anybody who would lead you to a bowling alley to drink Malort is not your friend.
posted by SpiffyRob at 1:40 PM on November 26, 2010 [1 favorite]

I was incredibly anti-Malort, about as anti-Malort as you could be, until my friend made me a Chicago 75, his own riff on a French 75 with Goose Island 312, North Shore Aquavit, and a bit of Malort.

I talked shit incessantly until I tried it and now, while I pray I'll have the strength to resist the demand to do shots of it, I can't totally hate Malort.

I just sang the title of this post to baxter_ilion to the tune of Holiday Road. He was amused.

Sadly, we will also be drinking malort at a bowling alley on Weds, and will miss. D:

You can turn out a decent green icing cake with boxed mix, crushed pineapple, Cool Whip, and instant pistachio pudding. Doesn't take so long to bake, actually.

When I was a lad, "Cyber" when used by itself, was short for Cybersex. As in, "Do you want to Cyber?" Accordingly, I have very different expectations for what will transpire on CyberMonday.

Still! A rousing success. Very excited to celebrate with the consumption of many a tiny beer.

6ish hours until boorgertime!

Whenever I eat breakfast and lunch on the day of a GoatUp, I find myself hating whatever I'm eating because it isn't a boorger.

Shit. My permanent retainer (which I've had for like 15 years) has come loose on one side. It's staying more or less in place. For now. Anyone know a good Orthodontist? (Preferably one covered by Cigna DHMO?)

I'm still totally coming.
posted by SpiffyRob at 11:14 AM on December 1, 2010

I think the Goat has a guy in the back who can take care of that for you.

I won't be there tonight; I'm going bowling. That's why I made a Super Awesome Mid-month Pizza Meetup!

I think we'll all be applying some tiny-beer anesthesia. You are not unique.
posted by BevosAngryGhost at 12:40 PM on December 1, 2010

Unless somebody else has a piece of metal half-attached to the backs of their bottom teeth, I'm going to go ahead and reject the idea that I'm not unique.

Also my hair is getting long and is kind of back in mock pompadour state and the sideburns ain't helping.

And I want beer and boorgers now. Thankfully, they're just 3ish hours away.
posted by SpiffyRob at 12:54 PM on December 1, 2010

Hey, Spiffy! That happened to my about two hours before I was supposed to speak at my high school graduation. Mom removed the poky bits of the retainer with needlenose pliers and some sort of snippy thing. About 15 years later I finally had the remaining bits of cement removed by a dentist.

Where is Mr. Schneider, anyway?
posted by crush-onastick at 1:02 PM on December 1, 2010

If I had to guess, I'd say Mr. Schneider will also be bowling tonight. The absentee-for-bowling MeFites will be found at the Long Room I think, sometime later this evening.
posted by booknerd at 1:34 PM on December 1, 2010

Yeah, my lizard brain wanted to rip the thing out by myself and scrape at the cement with a paper clip, but I found an in-plan ortho near work and got an appointment for tomorrow. I figured that, whether the answer is reseal or remove, I probably want a pro's opinion.

(But man do I hope remove is the decided-upon course of action. This thing sucks.)
posted by SpiffyRob at 1:42 PM on December 1, 2010

Oh, and Adam might have been lying to me, but I think he had another non-Bowling obligation tonight, possibly with out of town friends. He might have said he might try to come by. I... don't really remember anything from before the great metal-from-tooth separating of aught ten.
posted by SpiffyRob at 1:43 PM on December 1, 2010

Oh, hey. Sorry, I've been...away. Please do not talk about the shoe thing. My face is/will still have might be sore.

I am chagrined at the whelk thing. I loooooved that game, too. Can you believe there's no single YouTube video of the opera scene? A crime.

I do have another obligation tonight, a going away party for a friend who's departing our fair city, possibly forever. I will stop by the Goat, though, for an hour or so before going to her thing at Elephant & Castle.
posted by adamdschneider at 1:53 PM on December 1, 2010

I do have a piece of metal on the backs of my bottom teeth, but mine is wholly attached, so touche, sir.

I also have a false tooth held in with temporary glue. For the past seven years. I live in constant fear that it will fall out, much like a pin from a grenade, and I will explode.
