Sun July 6 at 8:30 AM, Ronald McDonald House
5444 South Drexel Avenue, Chicago, IL, USA (Map & Directions)
Let's go to the Ronald McDonald house in Hyde Park and make brunch for the families of sick kids.
We've done this a couple times before. Last time, people said dinner on sunday was tough, so we're going to try brunch on sunday. Brunch time is targetted at 10am, so plan accordingly as to when to show up. I'm planning on getting there around 8 to help everyone out and start working on whatever concoction I'm making.

The Hyde Park house asks that we don't bring more than 12 volunteers, but I don't expect that's a problem.

The house has 98% of the utensils and tools you need for cooking, we just need people to a) volunteer to be head chef for a brunch dish or b) volunteer to be sous chef for any / all of the head chefs. A variety of dishes that can get around a variety of tastes, allergies, and dietary restrictions is preferred by us, though the house is just happy for us to show up. We're typically cooking for 25 guests + us, and they'd prefer us to err on the side of leftovers if we can. We've rarely had issues with that though.

A couple of us drive down there, so if you need a ride, mention it and we'll get you there.

Gotcha covered, crush.

If the weather's nice and we feel like it, we can have mimosas in my tiny backyard afterward. We've got one spare parking place and can possibly borrow one from the neighbor.

Could my lovely companion and I requisition ferry service via Garlic?

not a problem.

I think I want to make Pork Chops with some sort of chutney. And I'll bring fruit along for a fruit salad since that's always popular.

I was thinking either a tomato tart or a spinach potato hash (one with one without sausage) or maybe muffins.

Or-oooooooo-cherry pie bars!

I'll come and do sous-cheffing. I may also have a Mr. Fig with me, depending on his schedule.

yeah for sous chefs! They're great for when I plan on doing biscuits from scratch, or Eamon buys 5 lbs of shrimp that need to be cleaned!

It's a month out, time to start firming up our menu plans.

so far it's:

Pork Chops and chutney
fruit salad
something from crush

Any other ideas?

I'd like to do like a baked egg thing. Can you bake eggs in muffin papers? I'm sure you can, right? That way they can be individual, and some can have cheese and some can be cheese-free.

I'll make baked eggs.

menu confirmation time:

Pork Chops and chutney
fruit salad
baked eggs
cherry pie bars
breakfast potatoes
tomato tart

Look good? are we missing anything?

Tomato tart! (I may throw in a bonus muffin or something for grab and go, but I can't guarantee).

also, mimosas in my tiny backyard afterward! or champagne cocktail, if you don't like orange juice

I would like to attend, can I also sous chef?

We love having sous chef's!

Just a heads up, if you are a maybe and are actually going to come, switch over to attending so we don't shoot over the 12 volunteers they'd like to cap us at.

So I reiterate--if you get edged out of brunch, feel free to stop by my place afterward. Sent me a memail and I'll give you the address & whatnot.

That sound you just heard was me volunteering to sleep in and my "Maybe" staying there in case it does turn out I'm needed at Ronald McDonald House after all.

Let me know if there's any special orange juice or champagne or anything else I can bring to your backyard.

I'll have a couple bottles of bubbles and some juice (there's also a Walgreen's across the street), but feel free to bring more. Those of us at RMDH will just have eaten brunch, but I'll try to have something like Trader Joe's snacks.

8:00 am is too early to start, 8:30am ( or however long your dish takes) is the right start for a 10am brunch. Sorry for he confusion.

I have to un-RSVP unfortunately due to I was over-optimistic about thinking I could make it. It looks like you're over-capacity anyway.
