Fri November 1 at 7:00 PM, Queen of Sheba
1503 9th Street Northwest, Washington, DC, USA (Map & Directions)
I'm going to be in DC on Friday November 1 for a meeting (which just got finally confirmed, even though everyone in the department I contract for has been furloughed recently and so it hasn't had any organizers...) and I'll be staying overnight. Wondering if any mefites want to meet up for dinner and/or drinks? I'm staying in Dupont Circle, but happy to head anywhere. Update: we have added a restaurant venue.

Yay! I would be really excited to see you on the 1st. There are some options in DuPont if you'd rather stick around there (and it's near where I work so I'd be pretty happy with that), but we can see what other people think.

I think the dinner options might be a little bit better over toward U Street or Logan Circle, but there's certainly stuff near Dupont. gaspode, are you interested in anything in particular, like something that's easier to get here than elsewhere (like Ethiopian or Salvadoran food) or mainly after a good meetup venue?

I'm a maybe for now, but I'll try.

I'm new to the city and would probably join.

Cool. I'm interested in both a good dinner and a good meetup venue, if that's possible! I'd definitely be down with something that's very DC like Ethiopian or Salvadoran (don't think I've ever had the latter?) or in fact anything else. I eat *everything*. Am coming from NYC so public transport doesn't faze me.

For Salvadoran, Judy Restaurant is walkable from Dupont and close to the U Street Metro. It's a hole-in-the-wall kind of place, but the food is good and they've got space for groups, and there are lots of places nearby for after dinner drinks if folks are so inclined.

Personally there's no Ethiopian I like better than Etete, a few blocks east of the U st metro.

The best Ethiopian I know is Queen of Sheba in Shaw. Great food, good bar, and they don't rush you through dinner. It's also often pretty empty on weeknights, so it would likely be good for a group.

I looked at the menus. Queen of Sheba looks good! (Well, they all do. But there can be only one.) What's a good time for eating? I'm all askew with my normal habits and consider 9.30 a perfectly reasonable time to eat dinner, but maybe like 6, 6.30-ish? 7? Do you DC people work late? Would people be interested in grabbing a drink or two afterward? If so, should we plan a place now in case anyone wants to just meet up for that?

I have questions, yes :)

I should be able to make it to Queen of Sheba by 6:30 or 7:00, and I generally find myself on the "works late" end of the spectrum around here. I'm very likely to be up for drinks after.

Coolio. If we don't have any other issues, I'll make it Queen of Sheba at 7pm. Any recs for bars in the neighborhood, post-dinner?

Flying into DC that afternoon! Would love to meet up!

Just found out that I have a work thing, so I'm unlikely to make it to dinner. But if you plan something else after, update the thread! And enjoy the delicious Ethiopian food. I'm jealous.

OK, I confirmed the venue and time. If we come up with a post-dinner drinks menu, I'll post it beforehand, otherwise it will just be posted on the fly, I guess. Looking forward to it! Should we make reservations?

dammit. menu = venue and I am an idiot.

For after-dinner drinks, I've had good luck with Dickson on U & 9th not being a zoo.

I'm actually flying into Washington the same day, and having just joined Metafilter, would love to come and meet some real people if I'm still awake.

Unfortunately, work madness today means that I'm no longer sure I can make it tonight, but I'll try!

Oh, no -- I hope you make it!

We're walking over so we're headed out now -- for those who don't know us, I will be wearing a black t-shirt and Bulgaroktonos will be in a striped button-down shirt. See you all soon!

It was great to meet all of you! It's not every day that you get to see children cry and then hear drunken karaoke! Thanks for welcoming me to DC :)
