August: Goat County

Wed August 7 at 6:00 PM, Billy Goat Tavern
430 North Michigan Avenue, Chicago, IL, USA (Map & Directions)
(Coming up on time, so I figured I go ahead and post this before people started getting anxious.) This is our monthly Chicago meetup as the Billy Goat for those who don't yet know that this is what this is. You should definitely come to this if you did not already know this. It is good. (You should also come if you have already attended and did know this, but I'm not as worried about making you feel comfortable.)
Not sure how long/late I'll be there as my parents are coming up for a long weekend visit starting the next day so..yeah...

The traditional U.S. birthstone for August is the peridot, which is a gem-quality olivine. Peridot is one of the few gemstones that occur in only one color, an olive green. The intensity and tint of the green, however, depends on how much iron is contained in the crystal structure, so the color of individual peridot gems can vary from yellow- to olive- to brownish-green. The most valued color is a dark olive-green. And now you know that.

We were just explaining to deathpanels yesterday that the pain that we have organizing our alterna-goat meet-ups is exactly why the goat meetup became a fixed monthly meetup.

Peridot came up recently in my life and I have no idea why. Was it in a book? Maybe. I do not know. The world may never know. But now I'm really curious.

I just started to do a Google search as if your peridot query was something you expected me to answer like it was AskMetafilter. But that is crazy and I am stopping now.

More from the peridot Wikipedia page:

It is sometimes mistaken for emeralds and other green gems. In fact notable gemologist George Frederick Kunz discussed the confusion between emeralds and peridots in many church treasures, notably the "Three Magi" treasure in the Dom of Cologne, Germany.

I love that "in fact" there -- it's so silly but it also so marks it as a Wikipedia article that I can't bring myself to edit it out.

Oh you know what? It might have been the Cash 4 Gold episode of South Park.

I have said a few too many good things about karaoke at the frog with you, my internet nerd friends, that my non-internet quasi-nerd friend wants to join us. Therefore, I dearly hope this won't be a repeat of last month's shitshow.

I'm just glad that "shitshow" is the agreed-upon nomenclature for that experience.

my non-mefi friends enjoyed it enough that I think they're coming again this month.
posted by garlic at 7:35 PM on July 29, 2013 [1 favorite]

To be clear, it was also very much a shitshow I enjoyed while I was there.

I am generally pro-shitshow.

What's the demarcation line between nerd and quasi-nerd?
posted by deathpanels at 5:21 AM on July 30, 2013

Fluorescent light exposure.

Speaking of shitshows, as the poster of this event, I'm unofficially turning this into a fundraiser for our local diaper bank. Don't feel pressured AT ALL, but I'll have some sort of alms box at the table at the Goat.

Mike, I LOVE this idea - do you want us to bring actual diapers or just money? I assume money would be easier to cart around for you. I'm so in.
posted by misskaz at 7:26 PM on July 30, 2013

I think cash would be the best. The place I'm checking out accepts both cash donation and diaper deliveries from Target's website (they or may not have a discount deal with them), so I'm going to reach out to them to see which they would prefer.

Prince among men. Truly. I'll be there. I may or may not be bringing guests. I mean, I talked it up to guests who are interested, but you never know.

I've been staring at this box now for a long time trying to remember what else it was I wanted to type in it. But I can't think what it might have been.

Prolly pics of your cat. I'm waiting.

Quite possibly, I suppose, but I don't think so.

This pleases me.

Other people: you were all thinking about posting pics of your critters, too. I can tell. I'm psychic like that.

Here's one of my stupid dog.

This week, for the first time in a long time (maybe since we moved two years ago, definitely , all of the laundry in our house was done -- except for the clothes on our body and the comforters that don't fit in our building's washing machine. That morning, Dusty and Lucinda immediately determined that the comforters were a good place to have an unplanned morning sleepover, probably because it was the only place that reminded him of the mess that is usually there.

My cat is a little perturbed because I keep making her pose when she just wanted to sit on my lap.

I've been waiting to get home where my cat pictures are to stun y'all with pictures of truly spectacular felines, but I can't get it together. Heading out of town this afternoon on a roadtrip with my daughter, and so will miss the fun. The south beckons.

Until that guy puked on the bar, that was an absolutely anti-shitshow evening. Good job everyone.

"Why does everything fun start after I left?", I say, missing the point entirely.
