Los Angeles Museum + Art Crawl #4: Getty Villa

Sun August 10 at 12:01 PM, Getty Villa
17985 Pacific Coast Highway, Pacific Palisades, CA, USA (Map & Directions)
We had so much fun at Watts Towers (and the La Brea Tar Pits, as it turned out) today that we're hoping to organize another Museum and Art Crawl meetup at the Getty Villa sometime in August. Join us for the beach, art, and good company!
So far the most concrete we've discussed is "sometime in august." Sounds like Sundays are best for most people, so how about mid-day on August 3 or 10? We also discussed the Getty Center + Little Osaka (Sawtelle in west LA), but the general consensus among those of us present was that the Getty Villa is a good summertime destination. Also, apparently they have a very good cafe on site.

The Getty Villa does require (free) timed tickets in advance -- booking is available through their Website. Of course let's nail down a date/time before we all go get tickets, though!

[Update] I confirmed us for noon on Sunday the 10th, because that seems to be a good museum-visiting time! Get your tickets now!

The Getty Villa is literally one of my favorite places on earth (though I haven't actually been to the cafe in four or five years, I've just realized, oops. But by museum food standards it's a little pricey but good I think still.) Heaven and Earth is a wonderful, wonderful Byzantine exhibit and it's only up through August 25th, so hey, pretty gold things and icons and manuscripts, anyone? Eh? All wrapped up in the prettiest version of the Villa dei Papiri I've ever seen!

Been forever since I've been to the Villa (and I've *still* not been to the new Center), so this would be a blast.

At the moment pretty much any Sunday in August is open for me - the 10th has a tentative thing on it, but I'd be open to any of those dates.

Yes please!

Woo-hoo! This sounds like a great plan. Food-wise, I'd rather hit up something on Sawtelle.

I'm not available the weekend of the 8th but anything else sounds good.

Oh and I can also do the 3rd but not the 10th.

I haven't yet been to the Getty, and the only date in August I won't be available for sure is the weekend of the sixteenth (wooo, wedding 8D 8D).

Sounds like we're heading boldly in the direction of Sunday, August 3rd. Does anyone on the "Maybe" list (or on the haven't-yet-replied list) have strong feelings against this?

I am so sorry, in my Villa excitement I overlooked the fact that we will be in Minnesota on the 3rd; is there an official I Flaked dunce cap?
posted by jetlagaddict at 7:28 PM on July 16, 2014

The 3rd would be better for me.

(My guest list has already changed once and it will probably change again but assume at least one for the 3rd.)

In the interest of inclusivity, are there other days that would work for everyone including jetlagaddict? It sounds like we're down to Sundays only on account of some folks' work schedules, so that means.. the 24th or 31st?
posted by Alterscape at 6:39 AM on July 17, 2014

Both those days work for me.

I'll have left by then. >

If I'm the only one who can't do the weekend of the 8th don't let that hold up everyone else.
posted by Room 641-A at 7:35 PM on July 17, 2014

I think there's only one option: do something cool on the 3rd, and do something else cool on the 10th! ALL THE MEETUPS. ALL OF THEM. Ahem. Just sayin'.

Totally on board, though after the MeFiversary I now have a distinct preference for meetups involving chickens. Is there any chicken statuary at the Getty Villa?

I'll be away on the 17th, but otherwise all Sundays in August work for me, though I do have to be back on the east side of town by late afternoon on the 10th.

I've un-RSVP'd if everyone wants to go on the 10th. I have a wedding on the 8th but the rest of the weekend may not end up as action-packed as xpected, so there's always a chance I'll be a last-minute yes anyway(with maybe a +n).

I feel like no matter what day we go with, someone's going to be left out, and that sucks. That said, confirming for the 10th?

Anyone feel like Sawtelle on the 3rd, to maintain balance in the universe?
posted by Alterscape at 5:06 AM on July 22, 2014

I'll do Sawtelle on the 3rd! I just brought it up it in the brainstorming IRL I posted.
posted by Room 641-A at 1:37 PM on July 22, 2014

So the 3rd for Sawtelle and the 10th for Getty? I am indeed down for that. And Ethiopian later.

Alterscape would you like to post the Sawtelle event? I'll propose the Ethiopian event and start folks working on the 17th/24th/31st.

Glad I checked back in on this thread, as I'd forgotten about the need to reserve tickets. :D

Thanks Alterscape for coordinating, not to mention this Sunday's event as well.

I'm reserving a ticket. 8D This is the weekend before my OMG DEO HAS A VACATION AND SHE DOESN'T HAVE TO WORK AND FUCK THE WORLD PARY TIME, so I should be pretty stoked.

Does anyone know how timed ticketing works at the Villa? I'll be in church that morning so I can't make it by noon. Is it a problem if I get in around 12:30 in that I might not get in to the villa the same time as the group?
posted by viramamunivar at 10:51 AM on August 7, 2014

If you think you can get in around 12:30, I think it probably makes sense to go for a 12:30 pm ticket. I don't think they kick us out after only 30 minutes -- if so, their $15 parking is a complete rip.

If this is anything like previous meetups (and given the overlap in participants, it will be), we'll be pretty easy to get ahold of via this thread to coordinate meeting up once we're inside.

Thanks Alterscape, that answers the other question I had on how folks coordinated meeting up.

I think I can make this...my uncle's bday party starts at 4.

The Getty ticket thing wasn't working earlier, but it is working now and I got my ticket. See you tomorrow!

Woo, looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow!

Now I'm not sure I'll make it - was on my way but the 10 is shut down in Baldwin park.

Pch traffic is a bear too. Going to be a bit late.

Brujita, chicainthecity, and I are chilling by the amphitheater waiting for folks for now
posted by Celsius1414 at 12:17 PM on August 10, 2014

Made it. I'd say allow 15-20 extra min for PCH craziness. Betweenthebars, hope you can make it.

We've got a quorum here so we're going in. We'll try to keep watching the thread to coordinate any later arrivals.

Shoot, the last couple of weeks have gotten away from me. Have fun and I will see you all next time!
