Game Day in PDX!?

Sat July 9 at 3:30 PM, Caldera Public House
6031 SE Stark St, Portland, OR, USA (Map & Directions)
Play boardgames, drink beer, eat stuff. You know, the usual....
As Specklet pointed out at the Jessamyn's-in-town-BBQ last week, we haven't had a game day in quite a while.
Any thoughts as to when, where, etc?

I'm thinking a Saturday afternoon could work well.

Maybe we could combine this with (the yet unproposed) 11.11: Enchanted Forest, Part II: The Rise of Mondor.

Yaknow, scary park in the day, games and beer and so forth in the evening..?

Any weekend but the one before the 4th.

I'm free pretty much any weekend in July. Not much help narrowing down a date, but I wanted to at least say I'm interested.

That could work.
Any thoughts as to which weekend?

And speaking of upcoming weekends, has there been any mention of a 12th anniversary meetup?
posted by nickthetourist at 3:35 PM on June 19, 2011

I was thinking the 23rd..?

And no, I don't recall any mention of 12.0. That's a little out of my league, I jjust handle the little monthly ones...

I'm down!

I am into this sort of thing. These sorts of things.

July 23rd? I'm likely not available that day until after 6pm.
posted by mimo at 10:47 AM on June 20, 2011

I'm not sure about the 23rd.
I had intended to go to Cars in the Park that afternoon. And possibly Allure of the Automobile if I haven't seen it by then.

What about July 16th?
posted by nickthetourist at 2:53 PM on June 20, 2011

Or the 9th, for that matter?
posted by nickthetourist at 2:59 PM on June 20, 2011

I could manage the 9th.
posted by fiercekitten at 7:40 PM on June 20, 2011

I have a wedding to attend the weekend of the 9th, but am pretty wide open the rest of July.
posted by dersins at 7:51 AM on June 21, 2011

How about the 30th then?
posted by geckoinpdx at 9:59 AM on June 21, 2011

Is the 16th definitely out? That's my birthday weekend. Anyone want to meet for drinks anyway?
posted by mimo at 10:28 AM on June 21, 2011

I'm open to getting drinks on the 16th, whether that also ends up being Games Day or not.
posted by Greg_Ace at 12:37 PM on June 21, 2011

We could do drinks (and games?) on the 16th, followed by Enchanted Forest (and drinks) on the 30th.
posted by nickthetourist at 1:18 PM on June 21, 2011

I can make any of those dates except the 30th, and I definitely would like to buy mimo a birthday drink!
posted by Specklet at 2:12 PM on June 21, 2011

Just to be clear, I'm not angling for birthday drinks (although any offered will be graciously accepted); mostly I'm just looking for fun things to do that weekend. Also, the 30th works for me as well.
posted by mimo at 4:19 PM on June 21, 2011

So, suppose we were to have Game Day w/Drinks on the 16th....

We could turn it into our own little 12th Anniversary / mimo's birthday Meetup, with games and such.

When and where works for everyone?
posted by nickthetourist at 6:11 PM on June 21, 2011

Umm, the 16th isn't going to work...
posted by fiercekitten at 10:59 PM on June 21, 2011

Umm, the 16th isn't going to work...

It looks like we've got the 9th or the 30th (or even the 2nd, for that matter).

Shall we do both?
posted by nickthetourist at 7:20 AM on June 22, 2011

Shall we do both?

More beer = good, as far as I'm concerned; so I see no downside to that plan.
posted by Greg_Ace at 10:34 AM on June 22, 2011

In that case, we can have game day on the 9th, and Enchanted Forest on the 30th.
Does this work for the majority?

I am a person that is interested in some metafilter games. Assuming these are of the board-and-card variety, and not so much the hunger variety, or the sort where you might kick an enemy's skull into a net.

Where would this shindig likely be held? I know the Lucky Lab on Hawthorne has a regular board game group thanks to their huge cafeteria-like main room.

curious nu: Where would this shindig likely be held?

In the past we've gone to:
Cascade Brewing Barrel House
Caldera Public House
Green Dragon

Caldera seemed to work best.
I'm open to other options....

Oh, and yes, these are boardgames, card games, etc.
Although kicking skulls into nets sounds like loads of fun. To me at least.
I suppose we could meet in the middle and play bocce.
posted by nickthetourist at 10:04 PM on June 22, 2011

I believe I will be back in town and available for this, and it's been some time since the one I went to (and nobody attended my 10th anniversary meetup). I would enjoy this.
posted by Nabubrush at 11:55 PM on June 22, 2011

Does anyone have any preference of location, or have an idea for a new location?
Or should I just make the decision for us?
posted by nickthetourist at 2:07 PM on June 23, 2011

I have no locational preferences.

Do people usually bring board games? I don't have much anymore, just Kahuna and Thud. And probably a cribbage board somewhere...

(but yeah, Caldera seemed the best space to me)

(though it is the furthest east of the three)
posted by Greg_Ace at 4:17 PM on June 23, 2011

Do people usually bring board games?

Yes.
Bring whatever you like and chances are someone will give it a try.
In the past, people have brought Catan, Dominion, Flux....and others I can't remember.

Go ahead, nick, shape our destinies.

Lucky for you I'm not feeling very adventurous....

Cadlera it is.

I mean Caldera.
Yeah. Caldera.

Is 2:30 too early? Should we make it 3 or 4?
posted by nickthetourist at 7:58 PM on June 24, 2011

I would vote for a little later on the off chance that that weather may make me want to be outside.

How cool is a walking-distance meetup? My house is within that map up there!
posted by Nabubrush at 4:18 AM on June 25, 2011

Per mimo's suggestion, I have changed the time to 3:30.
Although really, show up early, late, whenever....
posted by nickthetourist at 7:16 AM on June 25, 2011

My suggestion? I was supporting your suggestion. My suggestion is for 15:37:48 PST.

That's too much effort.

What is everyone planning to bring as far as games?
posted by nickthetourist at 12:10 PM on June 27, 2011

Just a reminder, if you guys want the upstairs space, you should call ahead to reserve it.

Also, next door is Coopers Coffee (where I am writing this), they have beer ($3/pints gilgamesh and migration on tap, cider in bottles) and wine, are open until around 8. There are sandwiches and small bite fare. Also two tables that seat 8+ easily.

I'll be romping around Wisconsin while you guys are gaming, but I hope you all have a good time.

What is everyone planning to bring as far as games?

Well, was going to bring Kahuna and Thud, but I just realized they're both two-player games. What's the preference for these? Lots of people around a single game, or a few smaller groups?
posted by curious nu at 4:45 PM on June 27, 2011

Some of both, in my limited experience, depending on what people decide to play and what's a "good" number of players/teams for each one.

Due to so much of history having happened before 1985 or so that apparently nobody in their right mind would bother being acquainted with, I won't bring Trivial Pursuit. I'll also leave at home my backgammon board and set of dominoes lest I be permanently branded a mossbacked fuddy-duddy or a hopeless recidivist or something.
posted by Greg_Ace at 6:29 PM on June 27, 2011

We could have a separate parlor games meetup! With backgammon and cribbage and Euchre and Hearts and Spades...

Sounds like an idea for the next potluck meetup.
And since it was your idea....well....err....where do you live?

I'll bring Settlers of Catan (with expansion oooh!) and Banagrams.
posted by Specklet at 2:16 PM on June 28, 2011

My game collection is pretty pathetic. I could bring UNO (don't judge). I don't think I even currently have a deck of regular playing cards.
posted by mimo at 3:37 PM on June 28, 2011

Oh, and I can bring my 1000 blank white cards deck, if people wanted to do that again.
posted by Specklet at 3:50 PM on June 28, 2011

I could bring UNO (don't judge).

I once played a single hand of UNO that lasted over 2 hours. Or it might have been 3 or 4. I really don't remember.

We can bring Flux, Lunch Money, Greed Quest, Mille Bornes....and so many others I can't remember.

I stopped by a game store on the way home last night, but the selection was daunting despite the helpful staff. I left with nothing.
posted by mimo at 10:53 AM on June 29, 2011

I will grant you that Scotch is a little bit more foolproof on that front, though the pricing is pretty similar.

I am seriously eyeing Summoner Wars as something to pick up next time I'm over at Bridgetown Hobbies, but that doesn't really come into this discussion since I'm gonna be out of town for this one anyway.

In that case thanks for the teaser - you shameless flirt, you!

Bananagrams is a great pickup game (and good for small wagering too).

ah, so deliciously close to Cheese Bar.

@ Two unicycles - I'm definitely up for a game of Zombies. Haven't played it in years.

We have the space from 3:30 to 6:30.
I figure we can always regroup elsewhere for drinks if we like.

Oh, man, you guys played Illuminati? In the early 90's I spent way more hours inflicting giant kudzu on people than I should probably admit, but I haven't played the game in more than 15 years. Next time have the damn game night on a day where I don't have a wedding to go to, fuckers.
