January PDX pub meetup!

Sun January 26 at 3:00 PM, Moon and Sixpence Pub
2014 NE 42nd Ave, Portland, OR, USA (Map & Directions)
The seasonal dark dreariness has been getting to me this year. We need a beverage, some pub food, and good conversation to cheer us up!
Settled on Moon and Sixpence, a British-style pub just off Sandy Blvd near the Hollywood Max/bus stop.

I’m up for that.

Yay.

I haven't done an IRL yet, but I'm interested in meeting local folks. Location-wise, NoPo is good, but anywhere with semi-easy parking works for me.

North Portland definitely has a lot of options, that we haven't adequately explored.

Still new-ish to town and so don't know local venues very well--I'm very flexible as to location, but would plead for special consideration of the not-too-noisy qualifier (I have auditory issues when there's lots of background noise). Thanks for proposing this, Greg_Ace!

Inner NE quieter options, obv slightly variable based on time:

Lucky Lab on Killingsworth
Backyard Social
Book Pub (used to be County Cork, challenging to find parking)
Oregon Public House (can be kid-heavy at times)

Quiet in N is pretty time-dependent, mostly dives or neighborhood bars. Leisure, Slims, Garrison, Barlow can all be good options. Stormbreaker is good on an afternoon, heated patio space.

I'm up for whatever/wherever. Some place with non-booze options (food) would be ideal.

curious nu makes a good point that a "quiet" place is often time-based; maybe we should shoot for a mid-afternoon start time, like 2 or 3pm on a Saturday or Sunday, to avoid the noisiest of the crowds?

The Moon and Sixpence on 42nd has served as a good venue for several work-related events, and hasn't been crowded/noisy on weekdays with 5 pm starts just for future reference. Parking is a bit challenging in the area, but it's easily walkable from Hollywood MAX.

I'd be happy with Moon and Sixpence. It's been a while but I've been there before and I liked it.

Haven't been to the Moon & Sixpence in forever, but that would work for me. I also like a mid-afternoon start time for a quieter space.

(A) Any objections to Moon & Sixpence?

(B) Which weekends DON"t work? Jan 11-12, 18-19, or 25-26?

(C) Saturday or Sunday?

A. I'd rather go somewhere a little closer to the west side, more central - A Roadside Attraction, Lucky Lab, The Bit House, downtown PDX, maybe even Doug Fir in terms of ease of getting there via public transportation. On the other hand, the Moon and Sixpence is only 30 minutes by bus so it's not that bad.

B. I have no plans for any of those weekends.

C. Either one is fine and I agree with an afternoon start.

Evenings are all I have available on the weekend, if it’s likely to go past 6pm I might make it out. The 18th & 19th are definitely out, however.
posted by nickthetourist at 8:27 AM on January 5, 2020

Any of those dates are fine with me.
posted by Sibrax at 10:10 AM on January 5, 2020

Nick, I'd guess that we'd likely still be going strong at 6.

So - next weekend (11th-12th), or shoot for the end of the month (25th-26th)?
posted by Greg_Ace at 12:10 PM on January 5, 2020

Either one works equally well for me.

I can't make it this weekend, but am a very strong maybe for the 25th-26th!

Yeah, at this point the lack of immediate response is making me think this weekend isn't likely a go. Any objections to the weekend of the 25th-26th? Saturday, or Sunday? (Sunday might be quieter??)
posted by Greg_Ace at 9:16 PM on January 7, 2020

Hey, I had a lot of fun at the last one of these that I attended. 25-26th sounds good to me and either day is fine (though Sunday will definitely be quieter).

Sunday Jan. 26 at 3pm - Yea or nay?

I vote yes!

That's a birthday weekend for myself and my partner, so it's unlikely that I could make it out, but no need to plan around me. Sunday the 26th is more likely to work for me than Saturday.

Sure!

Ok, I formalized it. Looking forward to seeing everyone!

How's this locale for board games? Should I stick to the very small, mostly talky ones (Skull, Spyfall, etc.) or is there room for a bit of actual cardboard and wooden blocks?
posted by Scattercat at 11:19 PM on January 24, 2020

I wish I had an answer for you, Scattercat, but I don't have enough experience with the place to say one way or the other.
posted by Greg_Ace at 11:12 AM on January 25, 2020

It's mostly round 4-tops and booths (you can check Yelp for photos) There are a few square 2-tops which the staff may/may not be okay with you combining. I'd aim for smaller games!

Something's come up at the last minute and I don't think we'll be able to make it. See you next time!
posted by Sibrax at 1:16 PM on January 26, 2020

Got the booth and table at the front, just to the left of the door.
posted by Greg_Ace at 3:02 PM on January 26, 2020

...and we're done as of 4:45. Next time!

Thanks for organizing this, Greg!

And thanks in return to those who made it there. I had fun!

A very good time--thanks to all! And I'm going to have to come back and try that impressive-looking fish & chips.
posted by Kat Allison at 6:11 PM on January 26, 2020

It was okay, not great. There's better fish & chips elsewhere.
posted by Greg_Ace at 7:47 PM on January 26, 2020

Sorry I didn't make it. Really want to get there next time! Thank you for setting this up.
