DC Ice Cream Social Redux

Sun August 5 at 3:00 PM, Crispus Attucks Park
23 U St NW, Washington, DC, USA (Map & Directions)
The 2016 Ice Cream Social/Potluck at Crispus Attucks Park was a lot of fun, so how about a repeat? Does July 7, 8 or 22 work for people? Or if July's too hot, later in August or early September?

UPDATE: August 5th looks like the best date. Looking forward to trying everybody's efforts. At least one attendee is lactose-intolerant, so I'm making the Vegan Chipotle Chocolate again.

July 7-8 are no good for us... July 22 is doable but probably only in the evening.

Thank you for posting this! I hope we can join.

We want as many people to attend as possible (especially you and your multiple delights!), so maybe July won't work. How about August 5, 12, 18, 25 or 26?

We’d love to do this again and I think any of the August dates would work for us.

All the August dates work for me!

Thanks for posting this, Johnny Wallflower! The 22nd and the weekend of Aug 11th don't work for me but all the others are good.

I'd love to be able to attend! Aug 18 or 26 would definitely work for me AFAIK at this point. The other dates would require a little finagling with the PITA daughter, who loves ice cream but not so much people, sunshine &c.

August 12th and 18th would work for us!

I have to double-check, but August 5th and 12th are probably good. We're leaving town on August 17 for 2 weeks, so later August is a no-go for us.
posted by duffell at 5:27 AM on July 2, 2018

The 5th and the 12th are the most available. Mrs. P. and drlith, could you do the 5th so everybody had matching towels can make it?
posted by Johnny Wallflower at 11:37 AM on July 2, 2018

Only if we can move the event to North Carolina ):

But Ms. Towels makes fantastic ice cream so my feelings will not be hurt if you select a day she can make it

Agreed, towels-for-all ice cream is transcendent.

At the risk of pushing this forward indefinitely, post-Labor Day works too!
posted by duffell at 12:33 PM on July 2, 2018 [1 favorite]

If the 12th works best for everyone else I can always drop the ice creams off with someone!

That was so fun! July 22 or any of the August dates work for me!

August 5 probably works best for me, and I'm also up for post-Labor Day if a longer planning timeframe would help.

As someone who couldn't make it in 2016 and had never been there, I took a minute to look it up and thought the google maps link might be helpful: Crispus Attucks Park.

I have lost the plot on the date discussion above, I'm afraid. Is Aug 5 the leading contender?
posted by phearlez at 1:45 PM on July 6, 2018

Yeah, let's go with August 5.
posted by Johnny Wallflower at 2:41 PM on July 6, 2018

I should be able to do the finagling to make it on the 5th.
posted by drlith at 4:06 PM on July 6, 2018 [1 favorite]

What's the likely sprog attendance here? I'm thinking I may fly solo since this falls right before the by-then 11-month-old's naptime and the five year old has a future kindergarten classmate get-together at 4.

We're so there!

phearlez, we're planning on bringing our kiddo (she's 2 years old plus change). Kiddos are always welcome! I believe the Pterodactyls brought their daughter last year, though we left ours with my mother-in-law.

Not sure what I'll be making, but there probably will be a at least one vegan and full-dairy option; and at least one ice-cream "treat" (pie, cake, sandwiches, bonbons, who knows).

Also, we can bring a folding picnic table!

Is anyone coming allergic to nuts?

I don't know how you guys managed to throw the dart at the not-likely-to-rain bulls-eye, but congrats!

After some (very brief) debating, I decided NOT to make mayonnaise ice cream.

Without giving too much away, I'm doing one full-dairy ice cream treat and two vegan ice creams (one sorbet, one with coconut milk). I'm excited!

I have a surprise to distribute. It's from the wilds of Portland OR, courtesy of Secretariat. Must be present to win.

We’re bringing a canopy in case we can’t find a shady spot since our kiddo is still pretty small. Will also have one standard ice cream and one vegan one, plus maybe another snack if I have time and ambition!

I am bringing watermelon and possibly a friend! (Thank you for the canopy brilliantine!)

We found a shady spot in the middle part of the park! See everyone soon!!

That was a great time, and my first MeFi IRL! It was a pleasure to meet everyone. For all who fell in love with aaanastasia’s injera chips, it looks like this is the company: Tsiona Foods

( I can vouch for their dips too, now that I recognize the name.)

Looking forward to next year already!

We had so much fun, y'all! I got a few photos--not too many--and I'll post them here shortly. As we were driving away Mabel said "papa, I had fun with my friends!"

Added a link to a Google Album on the right navbar above; link is here too. Didn't get nearly as many photos as I'd hoped, but what a wonderful time!

Posted some pictures. It was a lot of fun—your typical get-together where the women are off talking about hockey while the men swap recipes. Thanks especially to duffel for the table and to brilliantine for the canopy.

Speaking of recipes:

Vegan Chocolate (Chipotle) Ice Cream (PDF)

4 oz. dairy-free semisweet chocolate chips (Ghirardelli 60% Cacao Chips are good, but not vegan)

Mixture #1:
3/4 c. water

1/2 c. corn syrup

1 tsp. vanilla

Optional: 1 1/2 Tbsp. amaretto, Frangelico, Kahlua, or other coffee, chocolate or nut liqueur

Mixture #2:
1 c. water

3/4 c. commercial soymilk, almond milk or hemp milk

1/2 c. raw cashew pieces

1/2 c. unbleached sugar or Grade A maple syrup

1/4 c. Dutch cocoa powder (unsweetened)

1 Tbsp. tapioca starch or instant tapioca

1/4 tsp. salt

Optional: 1 dried chipotle plus chipotle powder to taste

Melt the chocolate in a double boiler over barely simmering hot water. Keep melted over the hot water but off the heat.

Combine mixture #1 in a blender until well-mixed, then set aside in a bowl.

Blend mixture #2 in a blender until it is very smooth and frothy (make sure that it is not grainy at all). Place this mixture in a heavy-bottomed medium saucepan, and stir over medium-high heat until thickened.*

Whisk mixture #1 into cooked mixture #2, along with the melted chocolate. Chill the mixture and then freeze according to the directions for your ice cream machine. Scoop into a 1-quart plastic container, cover, and freeze for several hours before serving.

Chipotle Version: soak the chipotle for 15 minutes in 1 c. hot water and add both to mixture #2 instead of the 1 c. plain water. After cooking, taste for heat and add chipotle powder as needed.

*If your blender is powerful enough, e.g., it came with recipes for blending and cooking soup in the container, you can thicken mixture #2 in the blender until it steams, 5–6 minutes or so. Dump mixture #1 and the melted chocolate into the blender, whiz for 30 seconds and transfer to a bowl to chill.

Sorry it took so long, but here is a link to the video of kittens that were raised with bunnies and so are extremely hoppy.
