Is sobbing permitted also? Been looking to get my sob on.

Oh yeah, totally. Sob away.

Other dude: Yeah, man!

What are we sobbing about?
posted by IndigoRain at 6:43 PM on January 26, 2011

Ze lady is headed out of town for a conference, so I'd need to run home and take care of the dog for a bit, but perhaps I could swing by after that.
posted by SpiffyRob at 6:18 AM on January 27, 2011

And I'm guessing the sobbing is because it was decided Jay Cutler can't run for mayor because his ligament doesn't have permanent Chicago residency.

Woo! Much will depend on how Tuesday goes and whether I end up making plans to return to my homeland of Tim Horton's and healthcare.

I'm unemployed as of Friday (hopefully temporarily), so I will be sobbing. Into free beers. At home with the puppy.

Our goal should be to get Fernando Perez to come to one of our meetups.

I should probably come and sob because I have always been too shy to come to meetups.

Yes, bleary, you should!

If I don't make it to Cupcake's tomorrow I'll come to the meetup. I hope my Sherpa will walk me back to the train station. I'll have to hop the 8:40pm train back cuz I'm guessing you guys will not be hanging out till the 11:00 train.

If Cupcake were to bring me XOCO I'd buy her a lot of drinks.
posted by IndigoRain at 11:56 PM on January 28, 2011

Ok, went to the party so I won't make it to the meetup. I would, however, like to cry and weep over driving in downtown Chicago. It's traumatic! Had these chicks yelling at me from the corner "why are you stopping, the light's green" and I'm all like "do you see that car in the middle of the intersection where I want to go?!"

I did, however, finally get my XOCO.
posted by IndigoRain at 2:09 AM on January 30, 2011

Well, since there is a high likelihood of OMGBLIZZARD I am going to switch to a maybe.
posted by bibliogrrl at 7:09 PM on January 30, 2011

Ditto.

I love you guys, but I love not being caught out in a blizzard more, reenacting a scene from a Laura Ingalls Wilder book (as Cupcake put it. We cannot decide between which book. She says A Long Hard Winter, and I was thinking about the end of On the Banks of Plum Creek).
posted by Windigo at 7:11 AM on January 31, 2011

My attendance will depend on whether the office is open on Wednesday. There have already been hints from HR that we may be closed if the storm pans out as predicted. If I get a snow day, I'm staying home and playing in the backyard with my snow-loving doggy.
posted by misskaz at 7:43 AM on January 31, 2011

I take the el in to work and don't have to deal with driving, so maybe I'll show up. But probably not if no one else is going to be there. On the other hand, if I am feeling particularly shy that day, no one else being there is a bonus. :)
posted by bleary at 9:18 AM on January 31, 2011

so, i got staggeringly drunk at this party on friday night and starting yelling for some reason about metafilter and then this dude was all like i'm on metafilter! and i was like me tooooo but i mostly lurk

and that dude was adamdschneider and i will try my gosh-darn hardness to come tomorrow and meet you all and not get staggeringly drunk. the end.
posted by chickadee at 12:13 PM on January 31, 2011

I would point out, though, that we have no problem being staggeringly drunk. We even trend towards it.

Know that it is on Wednesday, though, not tomorrow. So any drunkenness tomorrow would have to be on one's own. Or, I guess, with non-internet friends.

I've only been to one other meeting (with stewriffic and darncat), but I'd love to try to make it. Whether I can actually do that depends on whether the city is only mostly or entirely shut down.

yep, got wednesday! i spent today thinking it was tuesday, when, in fact, it is not.
posted by chickadee at 8:32 PM on January 31, 2011

Oh why the hell not? Everyone else will be fleeing in the other direction, so other than the massive amounts of snow, nothing should stand in my way of coming.

If the weather outside has gone crazy,
You must keep your spirits afloat!
For a few dollar bills,
say goodbye to your chills!
You can never say no to the Goat.

Warm yourself with a cheezborger
At this famous tavern of note,
Cause the man with the beard
has now summoned you here,
And you just can't say no to the Goat.

So forget what the weatherman tells you!
Just throw on your heaviest coat!
You can rest all your fears
with a few tiny beers,
But you cannot say no to the Goat.

The city is so crazy today with OMG, OMG, snowpocalypse, I feel as though I must be a contrarian and drink in a bar. I am more inclined to be in than ever.

2011: The Blanketing means I'm off tomorrow! I may be up for a drunkening. Jeannette is skeptical of my plans to go out, all the way downtown, just to spend a night at the Goat. She's got a point. Our pad is pretty cozy, even with the thundersnow and rattling windows.
posted by hydrophonic at 9:35 PM on February 1, 2011

I am so obnoxious every time the local news gets all crazy when snow is going to happen ("are we to be surprised by winter in Chicago again?") that I've been pshawing this all week.

But this is all kinds of f'ed up.

Even though my company has closed all buildings in Illinois today (checking which is why I'm even awake -- like checking snow days as a kid), I'm tempted to go to the Goat, but I don't know if I'll wimp out or not. It's know it's pretty obvious, but be sure to call and see if they are even open before you head out. Because I'm your mom.
posted by MCMikeNamara at 3:22 AM on February 2, 2011

Hmm. It appears that I won't be going anywhere tomorrow.

My office is working from home today and the rest of the week, so I'll have to make a game time decision. Heard it was taking 2 hours to get from downtown to Logan on the Blue Line last night so if that's still happening then ehhh.
posted by evisceratordeath at 8:58 AM on February 2, 2011

My choir practice got cancelled so I will be there if anyone else is going. If the Goat is closed I say we all bring a six-pack and drink underneath Michigan Avenue.

I will not be moving any further south than Andersonville tonight. Simons.
posted by Windigo at 12:28 PM on February 2, 2011

Bad news: I've called the Goat a couple of times today and no one's picked up: I suspect they'll be closed. I'll keep trying, but I wouldn't start your trip down there without calling first.
posted by eamondaly at 1:04 PM on February 2, 2011

I will be happy to go to Simon's, but one bus ride is all I have in me today.
posted by bibliogrrl at 1:07 PM on February 2, 2011

Hrm. In that case, and since most everyone is planning on going there anyway, we might as well just go to Simon's.
posted by adamdschneider at 1:17 PM on February 2, 2011

Simon's may be closed too - power went out there last night and phone calls are also going unanswered.

Hopleaf? Sovereign?
posted by misskaz at 2:02 PM on February 2, 2011

Has anyone been on the CTA today -- I'd rather not have to take the train all the way downtown and back out if the main bus lines are running OK (I'd be taking the Pulaski & Foster buses), but I also prefer not to be stuck on a bus somewhere in Albany Park or whatever.
posted by tivalasvegas at 2:04 PM on February 2, 2011

on preview: ugh. My vote is (purely selfishly) anywhere near Logan Square. But I don't know where any of those places are, and I've already shown my hand by being willing to go to Andersonville....

Revolution Brewing at 2323 Milwaukee is open, I just called there.
posted by tivalasvegas at 2:07 PM on February 2, 2011

fwiw, I live next to the Kedzie brownline stop and it's been running fine. probably wise to check for cta status updates before heading out.

bleary: oh nice, I used to live on Spaulding just north of Lawrence, and my cousin lived at Spaulding and Sunnyside.
posted by tivalasvegas at 2:29 PM on February 2, 2011

I'm with Tiva on Logan Squarish, for the same reason. This is, of course, why we meet at the Goat. However, the beer and food at Owen & Engine are AWESOME SAUCE (but Revolution Brewery would be better, because it's right off the Milwaukee L at California.)

CTA trains appear to be running, with the exception of the far end of the Douglas line, which is stopping at Pulaski, and the Skokie Swift, which is not only not Swift, it's not running.

Ravenswood trains are running again all the way to Kimball, there was some problems west of Western earlier.

Looks like no one's amswering at the Goat or at Simon's. I'm going to throw in the towel and do more digging.
posted by eamondaly at 3:19 PM on February 2, 2011

I'll check back in later to see if anyone is meeting nearish. If there is something at 6 and it's not near an el stop, I'll be late or not there.

I am glad we got a meetup out of last night. It was a great time. Although I am incredibly sluggish at work today, it turns out most everyone decided to take a second snow day, so nobody is around to notice.
posted by Zaximus at 9:47 AM on February 3, 2011

I am also glad I did not do my last shot of soju. This morning was rough and I'm still struggling to motivate to do anything today. I promised mr.kaz that I'd go to the hardware store today since I got another snow day...
