6117 N Lombard St, Portland, OR, USA (Map & Directions)
Hey, let's get together and binge-watch all four Christopher Reeve Superman movies! Brunch! Cocktails! Crockpot dinner! Lots of Gene Hackman!
We'll get started at 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 12th, and go from a potluck brunch and Superman all the way through (with breaks between films) to wrapping up Superman IV and some dinner that's been crocking away all day while we watch.

I'll host at our place in North Portland; we've got a good projector and sound setup and plenty of room for folks to hang around and watch and/or kibitz.

Note: we do not actually live at a 7-11. Mefimail for our actual address!

Hey I guess all it takes to get me to do a thing is to say there will be Superman there! This is not surprising, in retrospect.

So yeah, if you all end up doing it on a Saturday, I'm totally down.

I'm up for brunch, crockpots, and just food in general, but not much of a superman fan. So, I may come by for food and to see people I haven't seen in a while.
My attendance also depends on the status of our new business opening.

Sign me up for some bread-puddingish french toast for brunchtimes. Still thinking about a superman-appropriate cocktail.

A speeding Bulleit (old-fashioned)?
The Americano way?
A martini you must somehow garnish with two twists at the same time?

You'd need a powerful loco motive to drink one of those...

I somehow forgot that Superman was an excellent way to attract a maqsarian! We should have done this a long time ago.

I'd prefer Saturday over Sunday, by a slight margin, but I'd be okay with either.

Saturday does seem like the better of the two since we're planning on going on into the evening—give folks a day to reset before Monday rolls around. So I think we should plan for that if it doesn't somehow turn out to be a dealbreaker.

give folks a day to reset

That's the nicest euphemism for "deal with a hangover" I've ever heard.

Declare for Saturday! I have other things that weekend which need to be arranged to accommodate the Supermannening.

I am totally going to bring something without ANY chocolate in it. :D

Ha! I think we should officially set the date for Saturday, November 12 too. I'll go find someone who can do something about that.

Alright, I'm nailin' this thing down for Saturday.

I have to be at a conference in Seattle until noon that day, but unless I'm wiped out enough that the prospect of driving down to Portland and then back to Olympia is too daunting, I'd love to come. (I have actually never seen any of the Superman movies, and I figure it's always good to have one newbie at a marathon-viewing event.)

We have a couch you can crash on (and we're super-close) if you don't want to cram a round trip all into one day.

Food idea #1: You could bring a cheese plate, with some variety, like a red leicester, a white cheddar, and a blue cheese. I hear Superman is really into the American Whey.

A little research tells me that canonically, Superman's favorite food (even though he has no biological need to eat) is Beef Bourguignon with ketchup. And also, maybe he more recently has decided to be vegetarian? So I am considering trying to make a beefy and a beefless (basically a tasty mushroom stew) version of that for dinner.

Beef Bourguignon with ketchup

So, brown orange and red instead of red white and blue?
posted by Greg_Ace at 8:23 AM on November 8, 2016

I think... I'll serve ketchup on the side. This might be a vermouth sort of thing, where you just pass the closed bottle of ketchup over the plate with a meaningful glance.

So... the headcount is somewhere between 5 and 23?
posted by janell at 1:00 PM on November 10, 2016

Heh, that is a pretty big range, yeah. HEY FOLKS! If you could please revisit your Yes vs. Maybe status and update that in either direction if you're not truly in "can't know at all yet" territory, that'll help us plan a little better for Saturday. If you're a Yes But Not For The Whole Thing, that's fine, maybe Yes it anyway and just add a note in here.

I removed myself from the Maybe list - I don't think I'll be up to dealing with groups of people for a couple of weeks at least, sorry. We all grieve in different ways; mine involves introversion, quiet piano music, and scotch (shooting for small amounts of the last one but making no promises).
posted by Greg_Ace at 6:58 PM on November 10, 2016

I feel you. Zero hard feelings for anybody who's just not in a socializing place right now. For my part I'm feeling like I want to be around y'all and so I welcome the company, and I'ma try to focus on the hopeful vision of truth, justice and the American way wrapped up in these goofy-ass comic book movies. Luthor always loses.

Damn it, I would love to be there, but I've been sleeping badly enough and feel spacy enough that I don't think making that long a drive would be a good idea. Another time!
posted by Kat Allison at 1:01 PM on November 11, 2016

No sweat Kat, try to get some good sleep. We'll see you another time.
posted by Secretariat at 5:19 PM on November 11, 2016

And just a reminder- you can mefi mail me or cortex for the actual address, if you don't already have it. We might not be paying super close attention to mail tomorrow, and the address listed above is a nearby intersection.

I think I will substitute an alternate sweet pastry breakfast object. French toast feeds a crowd, and it seems we will be a smaller crew.
posted by janell at 7:35 PM on November 11, 2016

Still maybe-ing. Supermaybe.

Heading out in a few minutes, with bagels! My +1 won't be able to join us until this afternoon.
posted by Sibrax at 9:34 AM on November 12, 2016

Would it make sense to bring a small espresso machine? Steamers are so much fun
posted by aniola at 9:39 AM on November 12, 2016

As long as you're willing to dance with the one that brung ya, I say go for it.
posted by cortex at 9:41 AM on November 12, 2016

I think that is to say neither of us will know how to use it, but if you're cooking/teaching, sounds like fun!
posted by Secretariat at 9:50 AM on November 12, 2016

I will cook/teach! someone else will have to figure out latte art, though

I am also bringing decaf espresso and a box of stress ease tea.

Sorry for the late removal of my 'maybe'. I've had a hell of a week with this election and other shit, and am just not feeling up to socializing, so, I'm sorry. I hope to see you all again soon, once I process all the bad feelings I'm having. Anyway, hope you are having a good day watching Superman. Stay well.
posted by FireFountain at 2:19 PM on November 12, 2016

No worries, take care of yourself. And boy these movies are kinda weirder than I remember!
posted by cortex at 2:29 PM on November 12, 2016

I am headed up there now. I hope I'm not too late.

That was a rad, goofy meetup y'all. Thanks so much for coming out to those who were able, and hugs to everyone regardless. Let's do something again soon and under slightly less gobsmacking circumstances.
posted by cortex at 9:43 PM on November 12, 2016

Yes, that was fun and weird! We did it!! All 4 supermans!

It wasn't really a "photos" type meetup, but I posted some related photos taken before and after the meetup.
