November Brunch at RMH

Sun November 23 at 8:30 AM, Ronald McDonald House
5444 South Drexel Avenue, Chicago, IL, USA (Map & Directions)
Let's go to the Ronald McDonald house in Hyde Park and make brunch for the families of sick kids. Now with different and accepted by RMDH date!
We've done this a couple times before. Brunch time is targetted at 10am, so plan accordingly as to when to show up. I'm planning on getting there around 8 to help everyone out and start working on whatever concoction I'm making (probably sloppy joes)

The Hyde Park house asks that we don't bring more than 12 volunteers, but I don't expect that's a problem.

The house has 98% of the utensils and tools you need for cooking, we just need people to a) volunteer to be head chef for a brunch dish or b) volunteer to be sous chef for any / all of the head chefs. A variety of dishes that can get around a variety of tastes, allergies, and dietary restrictions is preferred by us, though the house is just happy for us to show up. We're typically cooking for 25 guests + us, and they'd prefer us to err on the side of leftovers if we can. We've rarely had issues with that though.

A couple of us drive down there, so if you need a ride, mention it and we'll get you there.

HOPE ME.
Our office is supposed to be making dinner at the Streeterville location on the 3rd, which has a waiting list like 6 months long. 6 months ago lots of interest in cooking food. Today, those people are not interested and no one knows how to cook. I have no idea what to make, especially since they specifically say no Mexican and no pasta for that location. Help help help help help help help help help help help

For this one though I'd like to do baked eggs again because I liked those and they're nice and brunchy.

For your Streeterville issue: Baked chicken is easy (oil and spice the chicken, throw in the oven for 30 minutes at 350 or so). Add in a Salad that's basically throw some chopped vegetables in with premix lettuce bags, make some cookies, maybe a potato salad, and some baked beans, and you're good to go.

I am panicking less already.

I'm doing it at Streeterville for work too! (On the 28th of this month, so I'll be able to give you the skinny on the differences.)

I somehow got myself on the planning committee and I was going to pretend like I have no idea how it ever works, but I can't help but interject some knowledge when I've got some to give.

(perhaps you've met me)

phunnie: if you want to add an easy vegetarian entree, you can do a veggie shepherd's pie easily.

Sweat an onion, celery and some carrots; mix up some TVP with hot water (per the package instructions), garlic powder, veggie Worcestershire sauce (available at the Jewel), salt and pepper. Mix it all together and put in a casserole dish.

Mix up some instant mash potatoes, spread them over the top of the TVP stuff and put in the oven at 350 for 10-20 minutes, then under the broiler for about 5.

For the brunch, I'll make a bunch of biscuits and bring some jam, some honey, some sausage patties and some veggie sausage patties.

I guess I'll do a potato again? Not feeling inspired right this second, so I'm open to other suggestions.

calendars are hard.

we get scooped on the date, but I missed that the 23'rd was open so that's when we're doing it. Sorry about the confusion.

Oh, hello everyone. I've never been to a meetup but it is possible this would work with my work schedule, and I'm a decent cook (grew up in parents' restaurant, etc.) who loves to do it. And I'm nice. Do you still have space?

Only for jerks like me who can't cook, sorry.

We totally have space! And we are actually nice! if maybe slightly tease-y.

Menu so far:
baked eggs
biscuits and sausage and other biscuitty toppings
a single potato.
sloppy joes
fruit salad

If anyone's looking to suggest a menu item, something vegetable-y might be nice. Or we can go with it as is, and damn the vegetable torpedoes.

Oh I feel like this might be the appropriate time to mention: I really really want to come to this but might have a Girl Scout delivery that morning. They won't actually tell me yet. So my eggs are currently tentative.

And yes I was being teasy, spelunkingpotato you should totally come!

spelunkingplato, rather.

Spelunkingplato, we'd be happy to have you, with or without a potato or phunniemee or the eggs.

Can I come and help out? I'm a medical student at U of C, and I'm embarassed to say I never realized we had a Ronald McDonald House down here!

sure!

Any menu updates? I'll be submitting it today. No worries if we do update it later on our own though.

90% sure I can come, confirming herb baked eggs.
posted by phunniemee at 1:12 PM on November 14, 2014

100% sure I will be there, ESPECIALLY if eamondaly agrees to the role of chauffeur yet again.

Still bringing biscuits, butter, jam, honey, sausage.

I've got you, crush.

Still haven't settled on a potato.
posted by eamondaly at 9:39 PM on November 20, 2014

Updating to 100% +1

Also, all of you folks who have knife sharpeners but forget them, this is a reminder that you wanted to be reminded about bringing a knife sharpener!

And Eamon, how about this potato?

Did we ever get a rough head count of diners?
posted by eamondaly at 9:16 AM on November 22, 2014

I can probably come...are we bringing food/supplies? Or cooking it there? I was going to suggest biscuits since I can make/bring those pretty easily but it looks like they're already on the list. If it's all right, perhaps I can just show up, without supplies/cooked dish, and chef it up.
posted by spelunkingplato at 9:52 AM on November 22, 2014

We bring supplies and cook there--sometimes people do some prep work at home because that's easier for certain dishes. Leftovers are a good thing.
posted by crush-onastick at 2:46 PM on November 22, 2014

Eeep--not sure if I can get food supplies before coming in tomorrow (but I will be there). May be able to get to Target right when they open, and be there later than I expected--perhaps I will get something more on the lunchy end of the spectrum. Will figure it out tomorrow, but let me know if there's something I can help someone pick up.

Running late. I think I'll just show up without stopping to get food, and help.

Fuck. Calendars are hard. I just woke up and from a text realized this is today, not next week.

I'm really sorry guys, I can't make it.

I feel like such an idiot.

Who is coming? We have 4 people here but only eggs!
posted by phunniemee at 7:00 AM on November 23, 2014 [1 favorite]

Thanks to those who saved the day, but unlike usual, we did not have too much food! It's always nice to have brunch with you folks.

It's okay, garlic. Now phunniemee is our leader.
