October PDX Game Night

Sat October 12 at 12:00 PM, Sibrax's house
13807 Southeast 28th Street, Vancouver, WA, USA (Map & Directions)
It's that dark and bedraggled time of year again...time for another game night!
Sibrax has consented to host the event in his new spacious accommodations. There's very little in the way of public transportation to Vancouver on weekends, so read the thread for info on who's willing to carpool from Portland and contact one of them if you want a ride.

Food - potluck meal, or just snacky foods?

The 5th, 6th, and 27th are out for me. Other dates available.

The 27th specifically, or the whole weekend?
posted by Greg_Ace at 10:05 PM on September 29, 2013

Just the 27th. I'm taking a sewing class
posted by mimo at 10:23 AM on September 30, 2013

my month is pretty busy, but I will cross my fingers and hope that I'm in town and not wiped out on whatever date you settle on.

The 6th, 19th, and 20th are out for me.

Pub would be ok.
Caldera opens at 5:00pm.

House might be better.

So it's looking like either Saturday or Sunday on the 12th/13th, or 19th/20th, or maybe Saturday the 26th.
posted by Greg_Ace at 1:09 PM on September 30, 2013

Whoops, I missed Nick's update. Saturday the 12th or Sunday the 13th?
posted by Greg_Ace at 1:10 PM on September 30, 2013

Saturday the 12th!
posted by curious nu at 3:00 PM on September 30, 2013

Well, it just so happens that I have moved into a new house with a lot of space for gaming. Are people still willing to come up to Vancouver? I'm pretty flexible on the dates; the 12th would be fine.
posted by Sibrax at 4:21 PM on September 30, 2013

How's public-transportation access there? In my limited experience, getting to Vancouver from this side of the border can take a fair amount of time. If we do this at Sibrax's we might want to coordinate some carpooling.
posted by Greg_Ace at 4:38 PM on September 30, 2013

12th would be good for me, too.

Carpooling would probably be a good plan, yeah. There are C-Tran buses that cross the river but it's a lot spottier as far as I can tell than the typical in-town experience if it's not commute time. We could give a couple people rides, three if one of you can squeeze into the middle back seat of our hatchback.
posted by cortex at 5:46 PM on September 30, 2013

I'd be coming from SE PDX and could carry 3 people without having to scrunch up.
posted by Greg_Ace at 5:54 PM on September 30, 2013

nu and I could comfortably fit two, originating from about the same general region as Greg so we could scoop up anyone to the north.
posted by mimo at 7:32 PM on September 30, 2013

I need to check on the bus schedules, but we have someone at work who commutes from out in Beaverton, so I know it's doable, though probably not terribly convenient. I'm happy to pick people up at the station, though, and everyone is welcome to come by early or late if that helps with the scheduling.
posted by Sibrax at 9:40 PM on September 30, 2013

We have space for 2; 3 if you don't mind squeezing.
posted by nickthetourist at 8:37 AM on October 1, 2013

I'm pretty sure I could do any of the dates in play. And I can carpool folks up as well. I'm the NE.

I'm assuming you guys wanna go to Washington just so you can play stoned Johann Sebastian Joust.
posted by Lutoslawski at 2:16 PM on October 1, 2013

That would involve...what, just standing around, mesmerized by the lights and the music?
posted by Greg_Ace at 3:07 PM on October 1, 2013

The 12th for me is a good friend's birthday game night already. Ah well. Have fun!
posted by aniola at 10:17 PM on October 1, 2013

It's almost impossible, unless something has changed in the last few years, to take a bus from Portland to Vancouver on the weekend. They do run decent buslines during the week at peak commuter times. So yeah, carpooling is wise.
posted by Secretariat at 10:18 AM on October 2, 2013

I have committed to an Ikea trip with my mom on the 12th, but board games sound like way more fun!

If it's in town, I might be able to swing by for the later part of it, but I'm guessing we'd be too late for the carpool train to Vancouver.

I will put in a vote for the 13th instead if that possibility is still open, though.
posted by duien at 6:28 PM on October 2, 2013

Ah, I didn't realize the bus options dropped so dramatically on the weekends. The 65 route does run on Saturdays, and the Fisher's Landing station is close to here, but carpooling is probably best if you can manage it.

Let me know if there's anything I can do to help people get here.

Oh, and here's the house.
posted by Sibrax at 9:55 AM on October 3, 2013

As soon as we settle on a day (Sat 12th or Sun 13th), I'll update the post with Sibrax's address.
posted by Greg_Ace at 11:02 AM on October 3, 2013

Oh, hrm. Looks like the 13th actively doesn't work for me. Which is okay if it's the better choice, I just shouldn't be offering anybody rides if I'm not actually gonna be there.
posted by cortex at 11:12 AM on October 3, 2013

So far I've seen 2 against the 12th, and 1 against the 13th. Speak up folks, let the majority be heard! Which day works best for the most people?
posted by Greg_Ace at 9:44 AM on October 5, 2013

Either day is fine with me, but in the interest of making a decision, let's say Saturday, starting at noon?
posted by Sibrax at 10:43 AM on October 5, 2013

Does that work for everybody? Going once, going twice...
posted by Greg_Ace at 1:43 PM on October 5, 2013

Gone! Event info updated. Now...what shall we do about food?
posted by Greg_Ace at 11:29 AM on October 6, 2013

Since there are a lot of "maybe"s, we were thinking of doing something like a sandwich bar and snacks, and then if it extends into dinner time or a ton of people show up we can order some pizza.

Everyone is welcome to bring snacks or drinks, but that is completely optional. We will have an assortment of both available.

Also important: if anyone is allergic to dogs, please let me know!
posted by Sibrax at 2:44 PM on October 6, 2013

We shall be bringing the following games:

Takenoko
Love Letter
Lost Cities
Morels

Lost Cities and Morels are both 2-player games so if you're interested in checking one of those out while you're there, feel free; they both play pretty quickly.
posted by curious nu at 3:00 PM on October 7, 2013

Playing Morels makes you a fun gi.

Any idea how late this might go?
The Duck is at noon :/

What, The Duck?
posted by mimo at 11:07 AM on October 8, 2013

Do, uh, you mean the football game? You can watch at the house if you'd like. The TV is in a different room.

Big maybe, the Portland Letterpress Fair is that day as well.

I hope Morels is as fun as it is beautiful; I bought a copy based on your mention, curious nu! :)

Yes, the Duck game.
(This is what happens when I post with a mobile device)

I think this alternate plan may work.

I'm uber-allergic to dogs. Please vacuum everything in the house.
posted by fiercekitten at 6:20 PM on October 8, 2013

I'm allergic to vacuumns. Please replace all the dust and air and food crumbs after you've removed the dog dander.

(just kidding!)

I don't hear about dog allergy often- I assumed it would kind of go hand in hand with people sensitive to cats or things like wool. Interesting- as far as animals go you're just allergic to dogs?
posted by Secretariat at 11:53 AM on October 9, 2013

The whole situation would be avoided if you would just regularly vacuum the dogs.

Also, vacuum is a funny word.
posted by mimo at 12:21 PM on October 9, 2013

It's a good, woody word. (specifically at 1:54)
posted by Greg_Ace at 12:33 PM on October 9, 2013

Glad I asked! We will make it clean as can be.
posted by Sibrax at 2:13 PM on October 9, 2013

Man, I would love it if you could fashion little space suits for the dogs by Saturday so they could be in attendance. Do you think that's possible?
posted by mimo at 2:42 PM on October 9, 2013

Does Fabric Depot have space suit material?
posted by curious nu at 5:04 PM on October 9, 2013

Possibly.

Also, it would be awesome if the dogs were salukis. They are so pretty.
posted by mimo at 5:12 PM on October 9, 2013

There's a guy in Portland who's building a DIY spacesuit (my cousin just interviewed him for her radio show) so maybe he can make the little dog spacesuits. Although I get the impression he hasn't worked all the kinks out yet.

Sadly, I don't think I'll be able to make it this time around. Maybe next time!
posted by duien at 8:34 PM on October 9, 2013

Alas, they don't make fishbowls that fit his head, so I think a space suit is out of the question. It's just the one dog, by the way. A greyhound.
posted by Sibrax at 10:29 PM on October 9, 2013

A greyhound?! I was not that far off with saluki! Does it look like this?
posted by mimo at 6:50 AM on October 10, 2013

Kind of! Same ballpark.
posted by Sibrax at 11:54 AM on October 10, 2013

Awesome!
posted by mimo at 12:06 PM on October 10, 2013

A greyhound? You really need to meet my other Vancouver friends sometime, who own two greyhounds! (I'd invite them, but they're very passionate about Halloween costumes, so I already know they'll be spending this weekend working on their costumes.)
posted by Secretariat at 3:21 PM on October 10, 2013

I've never felt so down about living in Vancouver, BC.
posted by justsomebodythatyouusedtoknow at 4:05 PM on October 10, 2013

Why, are there no greyhound owners there?
posted by Greg_Ace at 4:31 PM on October 10, 2013

I hear greyhounds are an efficient means of transport. You should adopt one and come visit!
posted by Secretariat at 5:44 PM on October 10, 2013 [1 favorite]

Oh cool! Always glad to meet other greyhound people. Maybe we could do a dog-centric meetup in the future.
posted by Sibrax at 10:36 PM on October 10, 2013

Don't know if it generalizes to greyhounds.
posted by mimo at 4:01 PM on October 11, 2013

Food: I'm bringing regular and sweet potato oven fries with chipotle lime dip. And beer.
posted by Greg_Ace at 4:31 PM on October 11, 2013

I'll bring... pickles?

I might bring something interesting from the farmer's market too, depends what I see there.
posted by Secretariat at 6:45 PM on October 11, 2013

Alright, we'll be heading out in twenty minutes or so with a variety of pickles and other vinegar-based items!

Good times. Thanks for hosting, Sibrax!

Yes, thanks! We will cross the river again.

I concur (easy for me to say, I'm originally from across the river). Thanks for hosting!

Thanks for coming out! We'll aim for another game day next month.
