Game Night at Greg_Ace's

Sun July 28 at 4:00 PM, Greg_Ace's house
4414 Southeast Center Street, Portland, OR, USA (Map & Directions)
Since we haven't done a Game Night in a while, I thought I'd host one. Rather that try to create a "meal", I thought it might be better to bring snacky-type stuff (along with beverages), so we can focus on games instead of food.

The 27/28th or the first weekend of August would be good.

Also, we have some new games:

Super Dungeon Explore
Dixit

I would definitely be up for this, but can't do this weekend. I'll be busy playing board games at my wedding :)

I think either of the other proposed weekends could work, although the 27th/28th might be easier.

The 27th/28th and 3rd/4th both work.

Congratulations duien!

I can't do the 27th or 28th, but the other days would work.
posted by Tsuga at 12:30 AM on July 8, 2013

I'm out of town until 15 July, but pretty open any time after.
posted by dersins at 7:30 AM on July 8, 2013

The 3rd or 4th are starting to look like front runners.
posted by mimo at 10:05 AM on July 8, 2013

Congratulations, duien!

The 27th or 3rd or 4th look good for me.

13th, 27/28th work for me.
posted by vespabelle at 10:57 AM on July 8, 2013

It's looking like whichever date I choose (27th/28th/3rd/4th), it will leave out either Tsuga or vespabelle. I'll give a few more folks a chance to comment before I commit to a date.
posted by Greg_Ace at 11:47 AM on July 8, 2013

The 3rd/4th weekend is good for me also, and it's the beginning of the end of TITP!

As for games, we could bring Kingsburg or try another round of Agricola. Also, nickthetourist, we have access to an additional deck for Dixit (if you don't already have it).

As it happens, I'll be in town for OSCON 23rd-26th. I've got an order for the Resistance, but shipment blocked on a preorder release in the order, so it might not be around in time.
posted by pwnguin at 6:15 PM on July 8, 2013

me and smasuch are in Portland on the 27th/28th, if you're up for visitors from the other Vancouver.
posted by heeeraldo at 8:11 AM on July 10, 2013

That just barely tips the balance in favor of the the weekend of the 27th/28th. Sorry, Tsuga; next time I'll be sure to rule in your favor.

So then, the next refinement: Saturday the 27th, or Sunday the 28th?
posted by Greg_Ace at 9:16 AM on July 10, 2013

My vote is for Saturday, the 27th since Sunday makes a nice recovery day should anyone consume too much.
posted by nickthetourist at 10:34 AM on July 10, 2013

should anyone consume too much

That never happens.

I'm fine with either day.
posted by mimo at 12:24 PM on July 10, 2013

After checking my calendar, I realized that the 27th is a no-go for us--we're going to see the Flaming Lips at Edgefield.

So, who's ok with the 28th?
posted by nickthetourist at 12:40 PM on July 10, 2013

Alright then, who's NOT ok with the 28th?
posted by Greg_Ace at 4:19 PM on July 11, 2013

the 28th works for us.
posted by heeeraldo at 3:46 PM on July 12, 2013

Sunday the 28th it is, then. Say, about 4pm? I'm going to go ahead and confirm that time, but speak up if you have a better idea and I can change it.
posted by Greg_Ace at 1:21 PM on July 13, 2013

I was going to suggest 2:00 or 3:00, but this could be too early for some.
posted by nickthetourist at 10:16 AM on July 14, 2013

I'm okay with that, if a groundswell develops in support of it.

If not - Nick, you're welcome to come early and pre-game, as it were.
posted by Greg_Ace at 11:40 AM on July 14, 2013

I'll check with the travel mob; I know we need to be at Devil's Point around 9 for Stripperaoke (this may be becoming a tradition,) so it might be more of a brief stopover than a full evening of games. That said, I probably won't be two hours late for this one, so there's that.
posted by heeeraldo at 10:40 PM on July 14, 2013

Do we want to focus on a particular type of game?
Or just bring whatever?
posted by nickthetourist at 7:29 AM on July 15, 2013

whatever
posted by mimo at 11:27 AM on July 15, 2013

mimo: whatever

I don't know, it's pretty boring....
posted by nickthetourist at 12:08 PM on July 15, 2013

but you're the one that suggested it!
posted by mimo at 1:01 PM on July 15, 2013

I was testing you!

BWAHAHAHAHA!
posted by nickthetourist at 1:13 PM on July 15, 2013

Ah, now I see what type of game we are actually playing.

So, what kind of snacks are you all thinking of bringing? Should I bring, like, chips and hummus type stuff?
posted by Secretariat at 9:03 AM on July 23, 2013

That's the sort of thing I was thinking about. I'll probably make a smoked salmon dip.
posted by Greg_Ace at 1:32 PM on July 23, 2013

I HOPE YOU GUYS LIKE TAPENADE BECAUSE WE FOUND SOME ON SALE
posted by cortex at 6:01 PM on July 23, 2013

TAPENADE IS AWESOME SO I SAY HURRAH
posted by Greg_Ace at 8:10 PM on July 23, 2013

Yep, we're bringing artichoke tapenade and crackers. If I think of anything else to put on crackers I might bring that too.

looking forward to meeting people at my first metafilter meetup

also looking forward to congratulating cortex for the first god emperor of dune reference I've heard in a podcast

Ehhh, once you're around him in person it's "god emperor this" and "Duncan Idaho that" all the damn time....

I must not reference popular culture.
Pop-culture referencing is the mind-killer.
Pop-culture referencing is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my allusions.
I will permit them to pass over me and through me.
And when they have gone past I will turn the inner eye to see their path.
Where the callbacks have gone there will be nothing.
Only observational humor will remain.

It is by references alone that I set my conversations in motion.

I just ran into hermitosis in Powell's, am trying to convince him to join us.
posted by heeeraldo at 3:35 PM on July 27, 2013

Alas, I'll have to sit this one out; deadline driven stuff at work is keeping me in the office over the weekend =(
posted by pwnguin at 9:01 PM on July 27, 2013

Current intention is to bring homemade pesto.
posted by mimo at 10:27 AM on July 28, 2013

I'm bringing blackberry cobbler from blackberries picked by my own scratched up hands.
posted by fiercekitten at 12:11 PM on July 28, 2013

We'll be bringing a black bean and corn salad, and also probably some games. Please don't eat the games. I'm thinking Mystery Rummy, and maybe the new Tsuro (with sea dragons!) if anyone is interested in trying it.

Also, blackberry cobbler sounds awesome!!

Bringing games:

Star Trek (TNG) the Deck Building Game (It's Like Dominion)
Citadels (2-8 player card game thing)
Face Eater (2-6 player weird Fluxx-ish game I bought I while back)
Continuo (2-5 player colorful domino tile game thing)

I am curious about Tsuro whenever I see it.

I think we are going to bring Tokaido, Super Dungeon Explore, Dixit, and....

Carcassonne.
posted by fiercekitten at 2:05 PM on July 28, 2013

If someone has Ticket to Ride Europe I'd like to try that out or at least read the rules.
posted by fiercekitten at 2:06 PM on July 28, 2013

we didn't bring games, but we are currently in Safeway only bringing snacks we find alarming (and/or aren't available in Canada.)
posted by heeeraldo at 2:53 PM on July 28, 2013

Tsuro is a lot of fun, and can be taught in about three sentences. The rules are super simple.

I'll be bringing an assortment of games, and some pretzels and soda.
posted by Sibrax at 3:03 PM on July 28, 2013

I'm bringing chorizo and cream cheese-stuffed, bacon-wrapped jalapenos.

I am looking forward to playing a new game so I am going to try to arrive early and get a seat at the big table!
posted by vespabelle at 3:03 PM on July 28, 2013

I think these are all new games to me, even a few of the ones we're bringing!

After a brisk and invigorating run for the bus, we're waiting on the next one. So... gonna be a little on the late side. But we'll be there eventually with food and drinks and games.
posted by duien at 3:46 PM on July 28, 2013

It was Whitman I think who said that the unchased bus was not worth missing.
posted by cortex at 3:54 PM on July 28, 2013

Thanks for having us! It was a pleasure to see some of you again and meet others of you; we're sorry about leaving so unceremoniously, but our travel mob dinner plans didn't leave us much leeway.

Let us know if you're in Vancouver (the northern one,) and we'll do the same when we're here next.
posted by heeeraldo at 7:37 PM on July 28, 2013

Thanks to everyone for coming. We couldn't have done it without you!

Lost & Found: A set of double-9 dominoes in a wooden box. It's here if you want to pick it up, or if you'd rather just leave it until next game night that's fine too.

I thought he was the one who said "A bus is the only vehicle that travels faster when you're running after it than it does when you're riding on it" ...?

Ah, dominos are ours. You can leave them out back and I can snag them this afternoon if that's fine.
