Great! I couldn't be part of the Empire Garden control group, but I'll be glad to receive the Hei La Moon experimental treatment.
posted by benito.strauss at 10:13 AM on May 22, 2013

I would be happy to support this social science experiment.

Yes!! I can actually make it to this one!

I will be there if I possibly can!

Part 2 will be one of those sequels that is better than the original. I can feel it.

I can make it to this one! I love going to dim sum with new people because it means we end up ordering stuff I wouldn't normally on my own.
posted by backseatpilot at 5:14 AM on May 23, 2013

I hope to make this, but I may be up very late night before and therefore still drunk by 10:30 AM. I'll call it by ear.
posted by maryr at 9:27 AM on May 23, 2013

I fail to see how being drunk prevents you from eating dim sum.

I'm not sure if Boston Pride will mean there are larger crowds than usual around.
posted by rmd1023 at 11:57 AM on May 23, 2013

Wait, there was a Part 1?! Drat. All attempts will be made to attend this and eat my share of dim yum.
posted by cocoagirl at 12:41 PM on May 23, 2013

You're in luck, cocoagirl! Part 1 is this Sunday.

Oh, nevermind. Pride is Saturday. For some reason I was thinking it was on Sunday.
posted by rmd1023 at 1:06 PM on May 27, 2013

I'm adding a comment here so this thread pops back up in everyone's recent activity. Hope to see you on Sunday (or else Horace Rumpole and I will be forced to eat all the dumplings)!
posted by DiscourseMarker at 9:03 AM on June 6, 2013

Oh, awesome, I'd totally forgotten that this was happening this weekend. Hope to see everyone there!

Hope I actually wake up on time this time!

How long does a proper dim sum feed take? My son has a recital (drums, because he's a rocker) at 1:00, which I can't miss unless I want him to bring it up at some point during an argument when he's 30, but it's possible I could do dim sum and then zip back out the the 'burbs in time for his thing.
posted by bondcliff at 11:56 AM on June 6, 2013

Pretty fast, usually, because the food comes over as soon as you sit down. I think we were out in about an hour last time. I guess the only issue would be if they couldn't seat us right away.
posted by Horace Rumpole at 1:50 PM on June 6, 2013

My best friend's birthday is Saturday, and our celebration plans are currently tbd but I'll be there if I'm not at a birthday party.

Just confirming myself, in case you need a head count for the reservation.

Also looking forward to cocoanut bun afters. The only place I know is the little hole-in-the-wall at the other end of Beach Street. Does anybody know a better place? (I'm looking at you, maryr.)
posted by benito.strauss at 3:05 PM on June 6, 2013

Aw, turns out I can't come after all-- next time, I hope.
posted by threeants at 8:27 PM on June 6, 2013

Um, it may be the same place? Right next to the Chinatown Gate. It's really the only place I know, but I really like what they do. It is a little holeinthewallish?

And trust me, I will be getting pastries. You don't need to ask me twice. In fact, no one asked me at all last time. I go to great lengths for pastries. If I had a car, I would drive to Providence just for Seven Stars ginger biscuits. (I'd take the train, but it's too far a walk from the station.)

I think we were out in about an hour last time.

Wow! I'm usually out for longer than that, mostly because they haven't brought around the cart with the damned turnip cakes and I AM NOT LEAVING WITHOUT THEM.
posted by backseatpilot at 5:59 AM on June 7, 2013

I'm with you; we won't leave before we've got what we came for.

Missed Part I (and every other meetup in the past mumble mumble years), but I'm gonna come say hi and eat lots of dim sum!

My birthday having friend is stuck in an airport somewhere so no birthday party today. Tomorrow is still up in the air but if she makes it back at a sane time tonight, we'll be celebrating tomorrow and otherwise I'll be free for dim sum. It's a win-win for me but I feel bad for my friend who is stuck in an airport on her birthday.

Ha HA! I am not really very drunk at all! I should be there!
posted by maryr at 11:00 PM on June 8, 2013

I'm hoping to be there.
posted by bondcliff at 4:22 AM on June 9, 2013

My off-hours work got a bit more involved than I hoped, so I won't be there. Enjoy tasty dim sum, folks!

Universal Hub says a fire at South Station has shut the T down there. If you're coming in on the Red Line, you may want to get off at Downtown Crossing instead.
posted by Horace Rumpole at 5:58 AM on June 9, 2013

And WBUR reports a power outage in the Back Bay. And Fox says the Pike is closed at the Pru, if you're coming that way. Jeez, Boston. I may arrive late.
posted by benito.strauss at 6:16 AM on June 9, 2013

Seeing as I'd be coming in on the Pike and pretty much rushing in and out I think I'll skip it this week. Please plan MORE DIM SUM in the future.
posted by bondcliff at 6:21 AM on June 9, 2013

No service alerts at the moment. Huh.
posted by maryr at 6:35 AM on June 9, 2013

Yeah, South Station is all clear now.
posted by Horace Rumpole at 6:51 AM on June 9, 2013

Not going to be able to make it after all, sorry. Enjoy!
posted by backseatpilot at 7:03 AM on June 9, 2013

I'm on my way in, avoiding the Pike like the plague. See you soon!

We are in the basement, to the right as you get to the bottom of the stairs.

Thanks, DiscourseMarker, for a great meet-up idea! Thanks, everyone else for making it excellent!
posted by GenjiandProust at 9:45 AM on June 9, 2013

Yes, thanks DM. It was delicious and good chat. Apologies if I spooked anyone off with the power outage; places were closed at the Mass Ave end but there was no sign of it at the Public Garden.

(And thanks maryr for the bun place. Definitely better than my previous bakery.)
posted by benito.strauss at 10:16 AM on June 9, 2013

Thanks for coming everyone! We will clearly have to do this again sometime. Don't forget to post pictures (those of you who took them).
posted by DiscourseMarker at 10:20 AM on June 9, 2013

Photos added. I trust Girl Who Ate Boston will upload her food photos--I just took pictures of the people.
posted by Horace Rumpole at 10:39 AM on June 9, 2013

That was fun! Thanks DiscourseMarker and everyone.
posted by daisyace at 11:31 AM on June 9, 2013

Absolutely, I'll upload the food photos in the next day or so. Thanks to DiscourseMarker for organizing, and to all present for indulging my compulsive food blogger-ism by letting me take photos of all the food! :)

It was fun y'all! I would be up for further dim sum outings.
posted by maryrussell at 7:39 PM on June 9, 2013

Yeah, good times once again! Had a bit of fluffy bun coma afterward, but no regrets.

I uploaded the food photos!

I plan to write about our Hei La Moon experience for my food blog, though it might be a while before the post is up because I like to include multiple visits to a restaurant in a single post.

Unfortunately, despite my haphazard notetaking throughout the meal, I'm having trouble remembering exactly what the various dishes were. If you remember a specific item's name or key ingredients, feel free to comment here, or in Flickr, or send me a MeMail.

Thanks, all! I look forward to another Boston dim sum outing. Stay dry!

We always called those shrimp dumplings shumai, or shiu mai. Also, great looking photos!
