Sun March 24 at 4:00 PM, Greg's House
4414 Southeast Center Street, Portland, OR, USA (Map & Directions)
It's been a while since we've done one of these at my house, and I'm in the mood for some barbecue as well. You know the routine - food, beverages, games (including but not limited to Dominoes, apparently). I'll be making pastrami.

I think I'd be good for any day but the 9th.

Anytime between March 22nd and April 1st works for me.

I am also unavailable on the 9th.

I just got a new set of dominoes!

mimo: I just got a new set of dominoes!

SWEET!
posted by nickthetourist at 9:07 AM on February 21, 2013

I'm with nick on the dates- that's PSU's break before spring quarter. I could probably swing some dates earlier in the month too- just not right before finals!

I'd enjoy playing some dominoes with someone who could remind me what the rules are. Do you know the chicken foot one?
posted by Secretariat at 9:22 AM on February 21, 2013

Looks like we've narrowed it down to the weekends of March 23-24 or 30-31.* Does either one of those NOT work for anyone?

*or possibly-but-probably-not March 2-3 or 16-17
posted by Greg_Ace at 10:35 AM on February 21, 2013

I only play the simple, basic dominoes game, no chickens or trains. However, the set came with instructions for those variations, so maybe we could figure them out.
posted by mimo at 1:06 PM on February 21, 2013

I would love to learn the train dominoes game (is there a currently preferred nomenclature than "Mexican Train"?).
posted by Prince_of_Cups at 1:12 PM on February 21, 2013

(is there a currently preferred nomenclature than "Mexican Train"?).

That's how I always see it. I didn't know about the variations until recently. You can buy sets specifically for them. Also, my dominoes have up to nine pips instead of just six. The number of pips can go higher too.
posted by mimo at 1:33 PM on February 21, 2013

Indeed they can. I just checked - my old 91-piece set goes to double-12. Also, they're so old they're made of wood. WOOD! Dang. (Sorry, not trying to one-up anyone, I was just amazed)
posted by Greg_Ace at 3:18 PM on February 21, 2013 [1 favorite]

My dominoes came in a wooden box. :(
posted by mimo at 4:23 PM on February 21, 2013

Well, there ya go - mine are in cardboard, that's falling apart and being held together by a rubber band.
posted by Greg_Ace at 4:51 PM on February 21, 2013

The rubber band isn't long for this world either.
posted by Greg_Ace at 4:52 PM on February 21, 2013 [1 favorite]

Sounds awesome. I actually have a copy of Hoyle's which includes rules for dominoes as well as all the card games. (Though I'd love to get a round of Spades going.... trying to gear up to learn Bridge!)
posted by ansate at 7:44 AM on February 22, 2013

I usually play all fives domino rules. It'd be fun to try it with a double-twelve set.
posted by homodachi at 9:24 AM on February 22, 2013

I feel like I need to learn to play Bridge also.
posted by Prince_of_Cups at 3:01 PM on February 22, 2013

I tried to learn Bridge once. Hardcore Bridge players can be scary if you don't know what you are doing. Erratic bidding earns many stern looks.
posted by mimo at 3:40 PM on February 22, 2013

I've got double 15 dominoes I can bring.

Wow, perhaps I should rename this event "(potluck and) DOMINO WARS!"
posted by Greg_Ace at 6:54 PM on February 22, 2013 [1 favorite]

I have no dominos to offer, but will bring food of some sort if the event-to-be is held on the March 23/24 weekend. The following weekend I'm working, and would not be able to bring dominos or food of any sort.
posted by dorey_oh at 10:11 PM on February 22, 2013

Looks like the 23rd-24th weekend is the target, then. I vote for Sunday, but Saturday would be okay too. Any objections?
posted by Greg_Ace at 9:41 AM on February 23, 2013

Sunday's fine with me! dorey_oh, you could always go with something like this.
posted by Secretariat at 10:03 AM on February 23, 2013

Secretariat, those cookies are excellent!

Sunday works for me, too.
posted by dorey_oh at 7:38 PM on February 23, 2013

I know how to play Bridge, I just never bothered to memorize the bidding conventions. I could be motivated, and I could be motivated to finally show up. Does anyone like to play Euchre? I also like Skat and Doppelkopf, but can never find anyone else who knows how to play (or wants to learn). I only know one way to play Dominoes, but am willing to learn.
posted by grootless at 8:59 AM on February 24, 2013

If you need a fourth, I'd learn bridge, too.

You don't think I can do it? Don't push me, man, don't PUSH me! I'll pull it...so help me God I'll PULL IT!! (sweats, shakes, fidgets, looks around nervously, doesn't pull it)

Really I'm just waiting until tonight or so, so that any view-at-work-only Mefites have a last chance to chime in on date/time. So far it looks like Sunday March 24 at...5pm? Or earlier?
posted by Greg_Ace at 10:31 AM on February 25, 2013

maybe a 4pm start? running late on a Sunday can be brutal
posted by Prince_of_Cups at 12:52 PM on February 25, 2013

Good point. I'm fine with starting earlier, but I think the last time we said 3pm, most people didn't show until 4 anyway.

Hmm...maybe I should shoot for 3pm again!
posted by Greg_Ace at 1:57 PM on February 25, 2013

I think I'd set it for 3pm and just assume that some will show up an hour or so late.

I find this to be a very prompt group. Show up at 4:10 for a meetup that starts at 4:00 and 90% of the people that will attend are already there and have already eaten 95% of the food.

I'm arriving at 2:30.

It has come to my attention that if I pull all the moving blankets off my downstairs Rumpus Room floor to expose the bare tile, it would be a perfect place to set up a big elaborate domino-effect type design. Bring your ideas!

I would play hearts and spades. Now I just have to screw up the courage to show up. You are a scary lot. And, nobody said anything about euchre or doppelkopf. *le sigh*
posted by grootless at 11:44 AM on March 2, 2013

You are a scary lot.

That's purely due to poor lighting. Come in to our parlor...

Seriously, we're always happy to include new people. No big whoop.

I have to admit it was the colorful artwork that piqued my interest. The explanation of the game made it sound like something worth playing

I would very much like to make this but I'm hosting a Passover Seder the next night and may be in a frenzy of cooking and cleaning. One day, I will get to play some cards.

Logistics: I've got 6 dining-table chairs, 8 folding chairs, and two folding tables as well as the couch and living-room chairs. If the typical attendance rate holds true, we should be covered (seated? seat-covered?) But if you have folding tables / chairs you'd be able to bring, please keep an eye on the attendance list; if it looks like we may go over 14 people or so it would be helpful to bring them.

I doubt the weather will be warm enough to set up table(s) outside, but there's always the downstairs Rumpus Room - if we're not using that for jousting or elaborate dominoes installations, of course!
posted by Greg_Ace at 5:22 PM on March 18, 2013

We've got four folding chairs we could bring, for sure.
posted by cortex at 5:48 PM on March 18, 2013

Yeah, actually, we still have 8 folding chairs and a table, because we didn't return one we're borrowing yet! So we can just throw the table in the car to have around as a backup.

Food! Sounds like we've got meat and dessert planned, so... maybe I'll bring bread and homemade jam? Is that too similar to dessert? Pickles? Cheese? It's hard to decide.
posted by Secretariat at 7:47 AM on March 21, 2013

Pickles would be good, since I'm making pastrami. Just a suggestion.
posted by Greg_Ace at 9:31 AM on March 21, 2013

I will bring cheese and crackers. The crackers may be home made.
posted by mimo at 9:57 AM on March 21, 2013

I can bring pickles, but I just realized I'm out of traditional cucumber dill pickles. I think I can bring dilly beans, though, and some sweeter pickles.
posted by Secretariat at 6:05 PM on March 21, 2013

I may not be able to make this after all. How late do you guys think you'll be going? I'm helping my wife's sister move and not sure when we'll be done.

(Normally I have a strict policy of avoidance when it comes to helping people move, but since this is her moving into her own apartment and out of our house I'm willing to make an exception.)

Re: food. I'm most likely bringing a carrot and cabbage salad, and a lemon meringue pie. Away on vacation now, will be home Saturday night, so cooking depends on how energetic I'm feeling on Sunday.
posted by dorey_oh at 8:57 PM on March 22, 2013

I'll be out all day Sunday and my kitchen is severely ill-equipped still, so I'm thinking of picking up some hummus and pita or something of that sort (e.g. chips and guac) from a food establishment. Looking forward to playing games I don't know!

Bringing various pickles (I grabbed some dill ones at the store), baguette, homemade jam and marmalade. I've discovered the reason I can't fit anything in my freezer is that I stored too much fresh fruit in it last year, so I've got to turn it into foods so I can make the space to freeze more things . It's the circle of life.

I believe Chris brought the biscuits. He usually brings good things (bring the cookie truffles again!).

Joust would be better in an open space without saxophones and things projecting from the walls. Also, maybe there should be Lycra suits or something.
