Hey Portland, a meetup soon?

Sat September 25 at 6:00 PM, Horse Brass
4534 SE Belmont St, Portland, OR, USA (Map & Directions)
There hasn't been one in a few weeks. How about 25-September?
I propose September 25th at Horse Brass.

A second venue suggestion, if this one is too far out of the way, is Thirsty Lion.

Yes! I support this wholeheartedly. I will be there.

I've never been to either place, so I'll trust whoever has a preference on the location.
posted by maqsarian at 2:04 AM on September 6, 2010

For those of us at the mercy of public transit, Thirsty Lion may be a slightly more convenient choice. But I'm ok with either place based on, as maqsarian said, anyone who has a preference.

argh! I just moved to p-land and I've been hoping someone would call a meetup so I don't have to and then there it goes on the weekend I'll be in Seattle. And I do so want to hangout again IRL with cortex (flashback: oh! you're..oh... :eyes get wide:) and all you others I met at my first Portland meetup.
perhaps I'll get back early enough Sat. evening to make it.
le sigh.

Voting in favor of meetup happening.

Derail. .. will be at MFNW Saturday at Pioneer Square, in case anyone wants to have a beer and say hi, or somethin'.

I had a real nice time meeting y'all the last time around at the anniversary meetup, so once more sounds great. Plus, I've been meaning to check out the Horse Brass for a while now. Their beer selection is supposedly fairly epic.

Also, for some reason I get a kick out of telling my afk friends that I'm going to go drink with "the people from the internet"... they're sorta befuddled by that.
posted by anarcation at 3:04 PM on September 7, 2010

Regarding the actual meetup, I haven't been to either place and would happily go to either.

Maybe I'll post my own IRL about the pirate festival once I figure out what day I'm going.
posted by Secretariat at 5:15 PM on September 7, 2010

I suggested the Horse Brass a few meetups back, so I'm in favor of going there. It's right on Belmont, so the bus goes right past it.

The Horse Brass Pub website states "A bit of England [...]"... I hope they don't serve their beer at tepid temperatures! Otherwise seems good to me, they appear to have the imported Old Speckled Hen (an English beer) on tap as well as the local stuff. Never been to it yet though.

No, we need to have a meetup at Tugboat for that sort of thing. Which we really ought to some time, it's a great weird little place.
posted by cortex at 6:16 PM on September 8, 2010

Sounds good to me - saved the date in case we work out a location.
posted by mrxinu at 6:59 PM on September 8, 2010

Well, it sounds like Horse Brass is the place.
Shall we say 6:00pm?
I figure that's early enough to claim some space and still gives the opportunity for a few to arrive fashionably late.
posted by nickthetourist at 8:37 PM on September 8, 2010

Seconded.

Agreed. It's shockingly non-douchey for a downtown bar.
posted by dersins at 4:56 PM on September 9, 2010

I too like Tugboat! But I'm not a good judge of venues. I just ate lunch at Deschutes Brewpub in NW with some coworkers, and it reminded me of the time I suggested we have a meetup there. I will never forget the disdain exuded at that meetup.
posted by Secretariat at 1:59 PM on September 10, 2010

Agreed that Tugboat is surprisingly cool - and on the oddest little street.

Meet-up at Horse Brass YES!

With all this mention of Tug Boat, I'm curious to see it.
Next time, perhaps?

Horse Brass is great but it can get packed in the mid-to-late-evening. I think we'll be safe staking out a big table at 6:00, though.

Food there is good, British pub fare stuff. Fish and chips and some good sandwiches are standbys, scotch egg for the adventurous, and some pretty awesome cheese/veg platters for the uncarnivorous. Beer's not served warm or anything and they have a lot of rotating taps. And possibly the best scotch selection I've come across in Portland. Service can be a mixed bag, usually pretty good but occasionally kinda awful. Hasn't kept me away, though.

Uh, not sure how that turned into a Yelp review all of a sudden. What I mean is; let's do it, I'll be there, xoxoxo

I'm so there.

I just entered the event in to my calendar, and I plan to be there. I look forward to seeing you guys again (hope you make it, dersins).

Hey, while we've got a Portland thread open, I've gotta add a quick "I Saw U": SE 43rd and Belmont food carts, during the street fair (today) at about 4:15. Tall, gray hair, male, wearing a Metafilter shirt. You walked up the French cart (bus), but then walked away. I was giving chair massages in the canopy right beside. Sound familiar, anyone?

Maybe I'll drop by! I haven't been to a meetup since before I was of drinking age.
posted by hopeless romantique at 6:29 PM on September 12, 2010

I don't know if I know any tall gray-haired portland mefites- maybe it was someone from out of town? Or someone who doesn't generally come to meetups?
posted by Secretariat at 12:39 PM on September 14, 2010

Could've been danf in town from Eugene?
posted by dersins at 12:47 PM on September 14, 2010

I'm excited, I'm excited, I'm excited about this meetup.

Also, yeah, we should maybe go to Tugboat for the next one.
posted by maqsarian at 1:18 PM on September 14, 2010

Tugboat good! Small, but good. I recommend a weeknight for that one.
posted by churl at 9:02 PM on September 14, 2010

Hmmm, no I don't think it was danf. Oh well, it'll remain a mystery.

Could it have been msalt? I don't remember what color his hair is, though.
posted by churl at 2:41 PM on September 15, 2010

His hair is mostly fleshtoned.

I was at the food carts on Free Massage day, too! I didn't get a massage, though. Just a falafel sandwich. Mmm...falafel...

Anyway, the Horse Brass is cool.

Jeez, since cortex refuses to click the "yes" button I'll just add him as my +1.

Just a heads up for those who may be interested:

The Polish Festival will be on September 25th and 26th.

fiercekitten and I will there the afternoon of the 25th, prior to the meetup.

Great food, great beer, etc.

I'm going to shill for the Polish Festival on the same weekend. Thetourist and I will be going prior to the meetup. It's near St Stan's Polish Church and is usually awesome. The placki are apparently to die for.
posted by fiercekitten at 6:55 PM on September 19, 2010 [1 favorite]

I may actually attend this one, though I am going to be at the Flock and Fiber Fest all day out in Canby. That may be all the excitement I can handle in one day!

Oh ya, and the Polish fest rules! Get there semi-early because they sometimes run out of pierogies later in the day.

Turns out I am working a 56 hour week, 8 of said hours on Saturday from around 3 to 11 pm. I could be back in the neighborhood of the meetup by midnight or midnight-thirty, if things are still raging then.

Tugboat, indeed.

I always lose motivation to go and meet strangers right at the last minute. It's hard to combat my unsocial tendencies. Maybe next time.

So, Trimet expects me to carry around a bag of 5-cent coins, do they? Huh? I must have blinked at the wrong moment because I still thought the fare was $2. Pretty ludicrous that they only take exact change. The driver preferred to refuse to take me than to accept a crisp extra dollar bill to cover the lack of said 5-cent coin.

On the plus side, it turns out that walking 3.8 miles has a nice sobering effect.

Also: Tugboat.
posted by spherical_perceptions at 3:06 PM on September 26, 2010

Fare hike caught me out, too. Fortunately Secretariat had nickels.

Nuts that the driver gave you shut about overpaying, though. On the rare occasions that I've done that sort of thing they just shrug. You may have gotten an asshat.

Also, the iPhone thinks I wanted to say sashay.
posted by cortex at 3:11 PM on September 26, 2010

I've had to overpay before due to lack of change as well; drivers couldn't have cared less. I've found most of the bus drivers around here to be pretty relaxed...most, but not all....
posted by Greg_Ace at 3:46 PM on September 26, 2010

My taxi's card machine wasn't working, so I had to pay a $45.00 cab fare in cash. Cleared out my wallet. The cabbie, however, was very nice and not an asshat.
posted by maqsarian at 4:13 PM on September 26, 2010

I used my bus pass.
posted by Secretariat at 1:03 PM on September 27, 2010

I've gotten a lot of last-minute "whoops I forgot to mention my card machine isn't working" from Portland cabbies. It kind of seems like shenanigans to me. But I live right near the Horse Brass, suckers!

Anyways. Next meetup, I'll remember to put a little food in my guts before stumbling down the Scotch menu in alphabetical order.
