Tugboat! PDX meetup at Tugboat!
posted October 1, 2010 11:35 AM   RSS | iCal | +googleCal

Sat October 9 at 4:00 PM, Tugboat
711 SW Ankeny St, Portland, OR, USA (Map & Directions)
Let's all go to Tugboat and buy idiosyncratic beer from their awesome staff!
Worth noting: they've been cash only since forever and so it is probably best to assume they remain so. It's right downtown so getting to an ATM isn't hard, but plan ahead if you don't want to pay a fee to US Bank or whoever.

The one thing remaining to settle: what time? I vote for 4pm since that's when they open, but my recollection of our discussion of the details at the last meetup is a bit hazy.

the one thing remaining to settle: what time?

Well, also settling the date would be helpful, unless you want to meet at the Tugboat at 4PM every single day for, like, ever.

Which maybe wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

Oh man. I changed my mind about how to post this and forgot there's no date.

Next Saturday, the 9th. At 4pm. Is my proposal.
posted by cortex at 12:17 PM on October 1, 2010

We start meeting at 4 pm immediately. And the meetup never ends.

I wanna come!

*cries*

Get drunkified for me!

So then, a week from tomorrow? Sounds good to me.
posted by Greg_Ace at 1:55 PM on October 1, 2010

The 9th at 4 is good. I'll come, and I'll dedicate all my idiosyncratic beer drinking to rtha.
posted by maqsarian at 1:57 PM on October 1, 2010

I plan to be there. I should have no work schedule conflict this time.
posted by idiopath at 1:57 PM on October 1, 2010

I'll tentatively say that could work for me, unless something goes horribly awry.
posted by dersins at 1:58 PM on October 1, 2010

Well, that's enough confirmed to at least commence drinking at 4, so I'll go ahead and make this official-like.
posted by cortex at 2:02 PM on October 1, 2010

You guys, maybe we should have fewer meetups, our comments are starting to synchronize

HOLY SHIT SEE WHAT I MEAN
posted by maqsarian at 2:03 PM on October 1, 2010

Mmmmmmm...warm flat beer.... "Bière tiède", I believe the French call it? Sounds better that way than the American English, anyway.
posted by Greg_Ace at 2:04 PM on October 1, 2010

9th @ 4, Tugboat: yes.

Tugboat.

Tugboat.
posted by cortex at 2:28 PM on October 1, 2010

cortex - I dare you to try saying that three times quickly after 3 or 4 warm flat beers!
posted by Greg_Ace at 4:32 PM on October 1, 2010

Count me in, assuming that this meetup didn't happen at 4:00 on Oct. 1st.
posted by nickthetourist at 6:08 PM on October 1, 2010

Dammit! Fixed. Crazy websites with their databases and their widgets and there requiring actual thought when you set up dates.

Also someone should get a like a mod or somebody in here to help cortex out he is really floundering with this
posted by churl at 8:15 PM on October 1, 2010 [2 favorites]

Someone should make a metatalk about it. That is probably the only way to communicate with a mod. Or so the legend says.
posted by Secretariat at 12:48 PM on October 4, 2010 [1 favorite]

I'll try to be there! My first metafilter meetup-- how exciting. I don't lurk in real life nearly as much as I do here, thankfully.
posted by mingo_clambake at 9:00 PM on October 5, 2010

Ok, I'm actually gonna make this one. I was called out of town for the last one and cried for many days and nights.

Tugboat! Whoot.
posted by Lutoslawski at 9:30 AM on October 6, 2010

Tugboat is kind of small, so we might end up wanting to split into two tables to avoid becoming an obstruction. I was there with 6 other people once and I kind of felt like we were right on the edge of being an annoyance.

Just a thought for whoever shows up first and is picking out a table- or for people coming in looking for the meetup group.
posted by Secretariat at 12:59 PM on October 7, 2010

people coming in looking for the meetup group.

Oh, please-- when's the last time we had a new person who wouldn't recognize the rest of the group?

P.S. Hey new people, please do come. Seriously00 we'd love to meet you. And mostly we're not dicks or scary.

Mostly.
posted by dersins at 9:54 AM on October 8, 2010

Gah! I was trying so hard to act non-clicque-ish! I can no longer deny that the mefites of Portland are nice enough that once you've gone to one meetup you will want to keep going back for more. And some of us are, um, distinctive enough to be recognized.
posted by Secretariat at 12:49 PM on October 8, 2010

Secretariat: I was trying so hard to act non-clicque-ish!

Pffft, right...so why do I never get seated at the "cool" table??

(Kidding, kidding! The PDX Metafilter crowd has always been non-dicky and non-scary from the very first time I showed up not knowing what sort of reception to expect. Seriously, come join the fun - confronting one's introvertive inclinations has a huge payoff in this case!)

BASICALLY ALL THE TABLES ARE ALWAYS COOL
posted by churl at 10:40 AM on October 9, 2010

I have to move around during meetups because otherwise I get coolsores from staying in one place too long.
posted by cortex at 10:56 AM on October 9, 2010

Incidentally, "The Coolsores" is the name of my new band.
posted by Greg_Ace at 12:38 PM on October 9, 2010

That link cortex posted says they are not open today until 5 (in case anyone was planning on showing up before then).
posted by idiopath at 2:24 PM on October 9, 2010

I'm already on track to be down there around 4, so if Tugboat is closed, I guess I'll hang out at Powell's or whatever until they open.

Plus about half the people usually show up late anyway, so it should work out fine.
posted by maqsarian at 2:43 PM on October 9, 2010

Man, that is weird. I swear to god it said 4 when I posted this, all seven days. I guess maybe he went in and updated it for whatever reason? This does make me feel slightly better about prior claims of idiosyncratic hours.

We'll probably aim to get there right about five, then. Silliness. Perfect day for drinking at the Tugboat, anyway.
posted by cortex at 2:51 PM on October 9, 2010

As it turns out, I'm not feeling super awesome so will not be joining you guys this evening. I know you're all heartbroken about this, but I hope that a few beers will help you get through this difficult time.
posted by dersins at 3:00 PM on October 9, 2010

This link claims 4pm. Don't know who has more authority, Google or the pub owners. Probably google.

dersins: I am indeed heartbroken. How horrible of you to ditch us just a mere hour before your Appearance. [/sympathy mode]

It's the meetup that refused not to happen despite the best efforts of the organizer. I'll be there at 4:00ish 5:00ish with bells on, just try and stop me
posted by churl at 3:35 PM on October 9, 2010

I arrived at 4 to find a very dark and sad-looking establishment. I too am at Powells, dying for a convivial beer!

We are on bus! We are en route!
posted by cortex at 4:23 PM on October 9, 2010

Dersins just look at this comedy of errors you are missing out on. I just finished my burrito and am heading into the breaches.

Once more unto the breeches, dear friends, once more;
Or close the wall up with our English dead.
In peace there's nothing so becomes a man
As modest stillness and humility:
But when the blast of war blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the tiger

So did you people ever figure this shit out and meet up or what?
posted by dersins at 9:14 PM on October 10, 2010

We met up, anyway. If we'd actually figured shit out I might not have dumped a beer in my lap.
posted by cortex at 9:36 PM on October 10, 2010

Not being a regular drinker, I am a lightweight without the basic hard learned skills of not being a total dumbass after two drinks.

I lost and later recovered my hat and cellphone, yelled about experimental music beyond the point of obnoxiousness (sorry), got maudlin and was one forgotten cell phone away from a self-pity drunk dial to a woman who left me a decade ago, forced my roommate and his friends (and through thin walls, the neighbors) to listen to the youtube versions of all the good tracks off of Locust Abortion Technition and the next mornimg I got an angry voice mail from the landlord about leaving my least favorite couch on the sidewalk in the rain over night.

I see teetotalling in my near future.

Oh and at some point I also cracked the CD accompanying my new Brün book in two.

It was nice to respectively catch up and meet you all though.

I might not have dumped a beer in my lap

In our lap, pal.

Other than that, though, it was a good time, yeah. Plus, the bartender/cook/sole crewmember of the Tugboat looked like Billy Mays, so there was that.

And even further beyond, to be honest. Ah well, laundry day was brought forward.

But it was fun.

Idiopath... you seemed ok to me when you left us...

Workin' on it, Dersins. :-)

By the way, just to float the idea here...I don't know how many PDX Mefite "orphans" might be around on Thanksgiving, but I'd be willing to offer my place and kitchen to host a small group (up to, say, 8) and we could cook up a storm. Memail me if interested.

Be forewarned, however, that I'm willing to resort to Drastic Measures for my fair share of crispy golden turkey skin.
posted by Greg_Ace at 3:21 PM on October 11, 2010

Yeah, sorry about your cd (and phone (and couch)) Justin, but I totally enjoyed talking to you about music and recall nothing that anybody'd need to apologize for.

Except for when that weird guy in the long hair and Memepool shirt jumped up on our table and shouted it's a rodeo, motherfucker and hurled his beer in the air while pretending to ride a bronco. I don't know what got into that guy, although I admire his ability to party super hard.

Pics added, for Tugboat and for Horse Brass...meetups 11.2 and 11.3? I've lost count.

I know this thread should be dead... but I just wanted to suggest that a Walken walk-in would be awesome.
