Early December? Mondays are out for me for about the next month, but other than that, I'm surprisingly fairly lightly scheduled during the week, once we get past this weekend.
posted by EvaDestruction at 7:20 PM on November 19, 2012

Oddly enough, Wednesdays work for me.
posted by Nomyte at 7:40 PM on November 19, 2012

I'll be around.
posted by zennie at 3:41 AM on November 20, 2012

The fifth? Or the twelfth? Say at 6?
posted by anotherpanacea at 3:57 AM on November 20, 2012

Either one sounds good.
posted by Nomyte at 4:27 AM on November 20, 2012

i probably can't be there until 7 at the earliest, but that's ok unless this is just a quick drink after work we're talking about.
posted by ubiquity at 4:57 AM on November 20, 2012

Either the 5th or 12th look good for me.
posted by COD at 5:02 AM on November 20, 2012

I'm in, depending on the date. Thursday the 6th would be ideal for me, but other days are probably do-able.
posted by JoanArkham at 5:27 AM on November 20, 2012

I can't do Tuesdays or Thursdays although I might not be able to come anyway.
posted by Mrs. Pterodactyl at 5:33 AM on November 20, 2012

I would love to join, but the 5th won't work for me. Like ubiquity, 7 am is about the earliest I can arrive.

// 7 am is about the earliest I can arrive.//

I suspect that will be plenty early :)
posted by COD at 7:10 AM on November 20, 2012

Any of those dates work for me.
posted by oneironaut at 7:30 AM on November 20, 2012

I'm a no-go for Wednesdays; I'm teaching those evenings through the 12th. Have one of SC's delightful veggie burgers for me.
posted by phearlez at 10:00 AM on November 20, 2012

Throwing in my vote for the 12th.
posted by elisse at 9:10 PM on November 20, 2012

So it looks like the 12th is shaping up to be a good date. I am also a likely later arrival -- between 6:30 and 7:00. Is 7:00 a reasonable start time, or would folks like to kick things off earlier?
posted by EvaDestruction at 6:55 AM on November 21, 2012

I can probably be there around 6 PM.
posted by COD at 6:57 AM on November 21, 2012

I will be coming home from a stressful job interview on the 12th, so I would love to drink beers with some MeFites.
posted by decathecting at 7:19 AM on November 21, 2012

I've been meaning to check out the Science Club, and any day of the week works for me. I'm also a 'burb-worker, city-resident, so 6:30 to 7 is as early as I can start.
posted by fontophilic at 10:30 AM on November 21, 2012

I can do the 12th, and could get there around 6 or 6:30.
posted by aaanastasia at 6:11 AM on November 22, 2012

Shall we officially promote this to "upcoming" for the 12th around 6:30-7:00 at Science Club?
posted by Nomyte at 5:45 PM on November 22, 2012

I'd like to be there but can't do the 12th.
posted by peeedro at 10:27 PM on November 22, 2012

Sorry, peeedro. :-( Maybe folks would be up for a late December/early January Friday or Saturday meetup? I would be, anyway!
posted by EvaDestruction at 8:18 AM on November 23, 2012

That's cool, I don't want to be the spoilsport since the 12th works for everyone else.

I'll put my vote in now for a post-New Years/pre-inauguration meetup to follow this one.
posted by peeedro at 8:50 PM on November 23, 2012

I am in for the 12th!

Also, since I'm already commenting, has Penn Social been brought up as a potential meetup location? It's pretty spacious and centrally located (Gallery Place).

I'm in for the 12th.

This will be a nice chance to check out the new L St cycle track.

i might go to this
posted by empath at 8:49 AM on November 29, 2012

I'm in, although that's also the day of our office holiday lunch (at Carmine's) so I may only be drinking Alka-Seltzer...
posted by JoanArkham at 1:50 PM on November 29, 2012

So I drove into work today so I could attend the meetup. It's next Wednesday. Frack!

Next Wednesday should be fine too.
posted by COD at 7:59 AM on December 5, 2012

Yay! I can make it. How do we recognize each other? Will there be a sign? The only time I've been to a meet up, it was at a MeFite's house, and cortex was there (so, hey, I knew I was in the right place :) ).
posted by bluefly at 8:50 AM on December 5, 2012

I think we should agree on the meeting place a day or two before (so basically back room or upstairs). There should be a sign, though I hope the same girl shows up with the MeFi shirt too.

Science club will likely stake out a small place for you. If it's under 10 folks then the crow's nest at the very top will handle you just fine. We have WLDC meets there sometimes and just email them to ask if we can reserve the space.
posted by phearlez at 1:41 PM on December 5, 2012

Okay, I've e-mailed Science Club to see if they can set us up with a space.
posted by EvaDestruction at 6:30 AM on December 8, 2012

I'll regretfully be missing this one, though normally I prefer going out on weeknights. I have to wake up super early for a long day Thursday helping out a homeless friend of mine who recently broke his leg and needs a hand getting some stuff sorted before moving to live with family in the midwest.
posted by exogenous at 1:02 PM on December 10, 2012

That sounds like your good deed for the season of giving, exogenous. I hope your friend is doing better soon! Sorry you'll have to miss this meetup.

I have not heard back from Science Club about space yet, but I will follow-up this evening.
posted by EvaDestruction at 1:11 PM on December 10, 2012

Just heard from Science Club, and they are able to give us a space. So look for the "MetaFilter" sign on entering to find us.
posted by EvaDestruction at 1:04 PM on December 11, 2012

I probably won't be able to get ther until 7:30 or 8... think it will still be going?
posted by empath at 1:19 PM on December 11, 2012

I would think so, though not sure for how long, exactly.
posted by EvaDestruction at 2:53 PM on December 11, 2012

Nice. Thanks, EvaDestruction! Looking forward to it.

Called in sick today, so I'm out. Hope we can do something again soon-ish though.

Grades are due tonight and I might not be done in time. Have a great time, folks!

Look up at the post when you first walk in. Third floor!

My heart says "attend," but my mind says "finish your goddamn statement of purpose." Hopefully another meetup will get posted for January.

Sorry, my work party had an open bar. See you all next time!

As requested, here's my black bean burger recipe/method.

1 can black beans (Goya FTW)
1 egg (can omit to make vegan)
seasonings
plain bread crumbs (in a can)

Drain and rinse a can of black beans in a colander. Dump them in a big bowl and add various seasonings. 2 tsp of cumin and maybe 1 tsp of chili powder is a good start. A bit of onion, frozen corn and cilantro are good too. Make sure any chunky-additions are smallish chunks or you'll wreck your structural integrity. You likely won't need salt.

Crack an egg in the bowl and mash everything together with a potato masher. You'll have something fairly soupy. Take your can of bread crumbs and shake some in. Stir a bit, and add more crumbs as needed until you get something you can easily squeeze into a firm ball. (If you're a measuring type, try 1/4 cup, up to 2/3c)

Divide it into 4 balls, and smoosh into patties. Put a bit of water on your hands to make this go easier. Fry up in a non stick pan. You'll want to cook these on a lower temp than beef burgers, and be sure to start them with a bit of oil. Flip them gently.

I suggest a whole wheat bun, pepper jack cheese, slices of avocado, and chipotle mayo to do up your burger.
