Board Games in Brooklyn!

Sun October 28 at 2:00 PM, ocherdraco's apartment (#4D)
192 E 8th St, Brooklyn, NY, USA (Map & Directions)
I want to play board games with you fine people! I can host such an event on Sunday, Oct. 28th. We have Ticket to Ride, Scrabble, and Risk, and I've been looking for an excuse to buy Pandemic or Dominion. We can either use my place (we have three tables that could be used for playing games) or somewhere else.

I am interested, too, and I have so many boardgames.

Actually sciencegeek and I were just talking about trying to have another boardgame meetup, so your timing is especially excellent!

Yes, please! I've got Catan & Cities and Knights, Agricola, and Eurorails that I could bring, if desired.

Yay! What time of day should we start? 2pm-ish?
posted by ocherdraco at 12:19 PM on October 15, 2012

I'm very much interested. Maybe 3? But 2 could potentially be fine as well.

I don't have any games, but I'm very much open to learning.

Argh, that's the one weekend I can't since I'll be helping my boyfriend move up to NYC in a U-Haul with, among other things, about 20 boardgames. We'd be very interested in the future!

I need to confer with the husband about the calendar, but I'm interested as well. As mentioned by grobstein, we were talking about this on Saturday while hiking. I even told him that I'd be willing to go to Brooklyn for such an event especially if it were on a weekend afternoon (yay for synchronicity!).
posted by sciencegeek at 1:23 PM on October 15, 2012

I'm sad I missed the hike. But I had a lovely relaxed weekend at home.
posted by ocherdraco at 2:24 PM on October 15, 2012

(So I guess what I'm saying is, with this event I can combine being a homebody and going to a meetup in one!)

I'd be down for that.

That sounds awesome! I hope I won't be called in to work.

How accessible to mass transit?
posted by Karmakaze at 5:08 AM on October 16, 2012

Sounds fun! I'm interested.
posted by inkytea at 5:13 AM on October 16, 2012

Quite accessible. A short walk from the B, Q, and F trains.
posted by ocherdraco at 5:18 AM on October 16, 2012

I can't confirm my calendar yet, but I'm interested if I end up being free.

oooo, I'll be in town for work and I was hoping there would be some kind of meetup. A boardgame meetup may be my favorite kind.
posted by ansate at 2:28 PM on October 16, 2012

ausdemfenster and I are interested in going, pending another meet-up with friends who are in town for the weekend.

The last board game meet-up was a lot of fun!

Risks fulfills my need for world domination in a healthy, non-Geneva Convention flouting, way.

Is anyone definitely going to bring Settlers? I feel bad for not being able to play last time.
posted by bookwibble at 1:09 PM on October 17, 2012

I don't have it, so if people want to play it, someone should definitely bring a copy!

Also, anyone potentially interested in a game of Fiasco to top off the evening? It's another game I've been meaning to try.
posted by ocherdraco at 4:52 PM on October 17, 2012

Assuming I'm free to attend, I can bring Settlers!

I hope there's a copy of Agricola present; I've wanted to try that for ages.
posted by ausdemfenster at 11:51 AM on October 18, 2012

Oh shoot I was going to bring Agricola, but I am last minute out of town that weekend :( Next time!

whoa! an event I barely have to leave my block for! I'm in with a maybe.

I'm having a craptastic week (sprained knee) and am looking forward to this more than I should admit to.

One question: are there a lot of flights of stairs involved in the location?
posted by sciencegeek at 9:13 AM on October 25, 2012

There are stairs into the building (one small set outside and one small set inside) but once inside there is an elevator. Also, I will memail you my phone number, and if you call when you arrive, I can come meet you at the basement entrance (also on the front of the building, but down a ramp, so stairs can be entirely avoided).
posted by ocherdraco at 8:22 AM on October 26, 2012

Also, if you want to avoid stairs as you come from the subway, take the F to Church Avenue, as there is an elevator at that station, while the nearby stations on the Q line do not have elevators. You can then take the B35 bus from Church & McDonald to Church & E 7th if you'd prefer to avoid the walk from the subway.

I'm bringing Carcassonne. I don't have any of the interesting expansions though.

I'm a longtime lurker visiting Brooklyn for the first time. Would my fellow lurker friend and I be welcome to join you all?

Sure!
posted by ocherdraco at 2:25 PM on October 26, 2012

should we bring snackies/drinkies?
posted by sciencegeek at 4:32 AM on October 27, 2012

Do you know what time you will be playing until? I may be back from Philly in the afternoon after all.
posted by mlle valentine at 8:07 AM on October 27, 2012

Please do bring snacks and drinks! I will have a take set up for them.

We did buy Pandemic, so that will be available.

mlle valentine, I expect we'll be playing for several hours. Call/email/text when you get back.
posted by ocherdraco at 10:59 AM on October 27, 2012

Is there anything food/drink wise you'd like specifically Ocherdraco? And do you need some plastic cups/plates?
posted by SpaceWarp13 at 11:45 AM on October 27, 2012

I'll be taking care of cups and plates. Just bring the kind of snacks and drinks you'd like to have, with the one caveat being that it might be best to avoid snacks that give us sticky fingers.
posted by ocherdraco at 11:55 AM on October 27, 2012

I should mention that I know at least one vegan will be present, so vegan-friendly snacks would be particularly welcome.
posted by ocherdraco at 1:08 PM on October 27, 2012

Well. I am now going to be going to work tomorrow to deal with the possibility of water and wind. We thought we'd have Monday to set stuff up and move things off the floor, but now ... who knows. I'm also noting that our lovely mayor may be shutting down the subway system Sunday evening.

(I live at the northernmost end of the 1 train so I want to be home long before this kind of thing starts happening).

This means that I can't come and play board games. Which sucks.
posted by sciencegeek at 6:45 PM on October 27, 2012

Okay! We have three tables set up for games. Two in the living room (dining table and coffee table), one in the bedroom (card table). And we've got a snacks/drinks table set up in the foyer.

When you arrive, buzz apartment 4D (Maloney/Bolotsky). Anyone need help with transit directions?

work people are freaking out and have succeeded in scaring me. :( bummed to miss this. I am literally walking around midtown with games in a tote bag.
posted by ansate at 9:26 AM on October 28, 2012

I'm really sorry i won't be able to make it because of the storm prep. My apartment is in one of the evacuation areas and i want to be home with the cat just in case.

I'm really bummed but thanks for doing this Ocherdraco!
posted by SpaceWarp13 at 10:43 AM on October 28, 2012

I'll be there in 20 minutes or so.
posted by grobstein at 11:38 AM on October 28, 2012

I know I only maybe'd but storm prep has me stuck at home too.
posted by Karmakaze at 11:41 AM on October 28, 2012

Alas, family has called me home to help them prepare for storm-related things. Hope we can have another board game meetup soon!
posted by mlle valentine at 12:28 PM on October 28, 2012

No worries everyone! We'll have another soon.

grobstein and loriginedumond are here; we're having a mini meetup.
posted by ocherdraco at 2:38 PM on October 28, 2012

Can we make this a semi-regular (monthly?) meet up?
posted by sciencegeek at 4:44 PM on October 28, 2012

Yes! We should.

Today we played Pandemic and Power Grid.
posted by ocherdraco at 4:46 PM on October 28, 2012

What a treat! Thanks to our hosts and loriginedumonde. Sorry no one else could make it! I would'nt've come but I live in walking distance.
