Penguicon is a combination scifi convention and open source conference that's been running annually for 15 years. I'm a guest of honor at Penguicon 2017 (my schedule), as is MeFi's own Cory Doctorow (schedule) and Ada Palmer (schedule) whose work's been discussed on MetaFilter several times. Other speakers include MeFi's own John Scalzi. [more inside]
Are any MeFites going to SCALE 15x (the Southern California Linux Expo) at the Pasadena Convention Center in Pasadena California running March 2-5, 2017? [more inside]
Any public radio or podcasting MeFites gonna be in Chicago for the Third Coast Conference from Nov 11-13 at the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place? I'll be in from L.A. representing KCRW. Would be fun to have a lunch / drink / meetup at some point over the weekend, if we aren't already going to be stacked with plans. I haven't even looked at the schedule yet, but just throwing it out there. Would be fun to raise a glass with my fellow producers! (I'm also planning a field trip to the best bookstore in the world.)
Anyone visiting Austin for DjangoCon and want to meet up with some Austinites? Sunday or Wednesday nights look like good times that don't conflict with planned conference events. UPDATE: This event is dead. Check out the event on the 27th instead.
It's decided that I'll be in San Francisco for the GDC again. It would be lovely to meet some fellow mefites in connection with this. [more inside]
I'm going to 360 MacDev in Denver. So, I've got Thursday and Saturday (Feb. 2 and 4) evenings to kill. I'd love to kill one of them with some MeFites! Is anyone up for hanging out somewhere in downtown Denver any of those nights?
Hey, Seattle persons! Me and iamkimiam and lewistate and DiscourseMarker are all gonna be in town on Tuesday, October 11th for an academic conference thing, so let's get together at Vito's at 7!
This will be my first time attending and I'd love to get to know Mefi's geo community in person. The preliminary program (PDF) they've put out looks kind of packed, so I'm open to times and places.
At the College of Staten Island, this coming Saturday, there will be an academic conference devoted to Staten Island's 350th anniversary. The keynote speaker is Ms. Carmen Farina, Former Deputy Chancellor of New York City Public Schools. At 2:30, I will be giving a short presentation about the period (late 1860s) in which General Don Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna was in exile in Staten Island.
We'll be meeting for drinks at Murphy's Law, of Gone Baby Gone fame. It's not the closest bar to BCEC, but it's a short easy walk, and hopefully that means it won't be too busy. This'll be Saturday night, overlapping some of the late Saturday events (JoCo and Omegathon round 3, in particular), but there's not a lot of drinking time that doesn't overlap, so there's really no choice. The next TEDx - regional TED event is in Detroit on Wed Sept 29. Any mefites going besides me? [more inside]
