Sat August 28 at 1:00 PM, Dolores Park
532 Dolores St, San Francisco, CA, USA (Map & Directions)
Can we meet up at a park on a weekend afternoon, grill some food picnic, drink beer, toss a disk and possibly enjoy the sun?
So as discussed below, we're going to meet up around 1 on Sat 8/28 at Dolores Park. We will try and put up something easily visible (Mefi shirt on a pole, balloons etc) but you can also memail me for my phone # if you plan to get there later and can't find us.

Every time I go to Golden Gate Park, it ends in regret, so I strongly recommend against Speedway Meadow.

Dolores Park is usually sunny, especially after the fog burns off around 11 am or noon. SF's open container laws still exist but they're more lightly enforced in some places than others.

That sounds like a great idea... unless it's next weekend (8/21-22), in which case it's a terrible idea since I'll be out of town :)

I'm interested; I've tried to make three different events and missed all of 'em.

Having to drive down from Sacramento is a bit of an annoyance.

I haven't been to one for a while either.

This sounds like a good idea. I haven't been to a meetup in a while so I will try to attend, but I am honor-bound to disclose that any frisbee game I am required to participate in will be 17% less fun.

Oh, and just a heads-up: last time I looked into grilling in GG Park, there was a whole rigamarole for reserving a park grill and it wasn't clear if bringing your own portable grill was OK.

...last time I looked into grilling in GG Park, there was a whole rigamarole for reserving a park grill and it wasn't clear if bringing your own portable grill was OK.

I can't find any clear info on it either but I live a couple of blocks away from the Park so walk/ride through a couple of times each weekend -- I do see people with their own charcoal grills (I believe I read somewhere that gas/propane is not allowed) although only in certain areas. I think I also read that even if you do reserve/use one of the Park's grills most people put/use their own hibachi-style grill inside since the provided ones are dirty and no one wants to scrub them down.

As far as a date goes, I'll make a suggestion: how about Saturday 8/28, location still TBD?
posted by hapax_legomenon at 7:40 AM on August 16, 2010

This sounds fun, although the Boy and I also have some busy weekends coming up. I may be on a work retreat thing the 27-29 and then we'll be belated honeymooning September 9-16. But if the date isn't one of those, we'll likely be there.

Sat 8/28 sounds good. Let's go with that unless people have strong objections.

Bummer, I'm going to Napa the weekend of 8/28. :(

I'm sure you guys will have a great time, though!

Random, disorganized thoughts on location:

If we do GG park, we can grill. If we do Dolores Park, we cannot. Or, we can, but it is officially verboten, and if the cops catch you they'll either make you stop or make you move to a small area near the kid's playground where there's a picnic table or two. The cops don't really care about adult beverages as long as you're not an idiot about it.

If grilling is not mandatory, we can still have a yummy, yummy* picnic in Dolores and have a better chance at sun, the people watching is great and the Muni is right at the edge of the park.

*Bi-Rite grocery story, while not cheap, is a block or so away and has lots of delicious deli-type things, etc. Also, Bi-Rite Ice Cream is right across the street but will be very crowded. And, last time I parked it at Dolores we just got a bunch of pizza from Delfina and had a pizza party on the lawn.

Downside: can be super crowded, not as much room for frisbee and the bathroom lines suck.

Golden Gate Park. Pros: can grill, more room for frisbee, bathrooms are clean and accessible. Cons: more chance of fog, Muni is relatively nearby but would still require a walk of several blocks (mostly through the park but if walking is not your thing you might not like it.)
posted by hapax_legomenon at 11:38 AM on August 17, 2010

can be super crowded

WILL be super crowded. On the other hand, it's much closer to BART than is GG Park or, I don't know, Glen Park.
posted by kenko at 6:01 PM on August 17, 2010

> much closer to BART than is GG Park or, I don't know, Glen Park.

*cough* Glen Park BART station *cough*

Most of Glen Park is up a long hill from the station, but there's a softball field and some other stuff down at the bottom, not too far from BART. Kinda boring, though.

Dolores Park is still a Muni transfer away from BART, so it's not that different from Golden Gate Park. I'd vote for GG Park, mostly because the Strybing Arboretum is lovely and fun to walk around in, and there are often neat birds in the ponds. I don't think you can grill in the arboretum but I'm pretty sure picnics are OK.
posted by Quietgal at 9:00 PM on August 17, 2010

Dolores Park only requires a transfer from BART if you're lazy and like paying an extra $2. (I say "lazy" because would Muni really save time over walking, once you wait for it? This is a half-serious question.)

Out of curiosity, would the weekend of labor day be better or worse for people? (Sept 4,5,6)

*cough* Glen Park BART station *cough*

I know that this exists (which is why I mentioned Glen Park at all), but I also know that

Most of Glen Park is up a long hill from the station

So, you know, it's still true that Dolores Park is closer to the 16th st BART stop than the Glen Park is to the Glen Park BART stop.
posted by kenko at 1:12 PM on August 18, 2010

Glen Park is *totally* close to the Glen Park BART station. Walk one block to Chenery, turn left and walk maybe 2 or 3 blocks and you're there. It's an amazing park, dunno if you can grill, though.

Provided that this does not take place over Labor Day weekend, I will probably come bearing a stone fruit galette and many sweaters because this summer has been some foggy bullshit.

Although today has been quite nice. More of this please.
posted by superquail at 5:24 PM on August 19, 2010

While I do love the grill idea, I'd be very happy with a plain ol' picnic too. And I suggest we do it at Dolores Park - good chance of sun, centrally located, close to shops if people forget or don't want to buy stuff until they get there, etc.

[I've never been to the actual Glen Park for which the neighborhood is named - and while I'm sure it's lovely I'd be afraid it would be foggy over there :( ]

Should we call it for Dolores park, 8/28. No grilling but we'll just bring stuff to picnic and pick up beer nearby?
posted by special-k at 10:50 AM on August 20, 2010

Sure, Dolores Park sans grill would be fine. How will we be able to find each other? If it's a nice day the park will be wall-to-wall picnickers. Cell phone #s, big balloon, MeFi T-shirts, something?

(We once tried a meetup at crowded Stern Grove and a few people gave up and went home because they couldn't find us in the throng. It happens.)

Good news everyone! MostlyBeans will be free on the 28th. And while 11 will be difficult for us late sleepers, it is indeed a challenge to get a good spot in Dolores Park in the afternoon, so we see it is a concern to go later. If it entices anyone, Ms. MostlyBeans packs a helluva picnic and we have an awesome, low-to-the-ground collapsible table we'll bring along.

This will be my first meetup, and in one of my favorite parks too. I could probably be there about noonish. I'm assigning myself hummus/pita/veggies. Possibly all home made if I'm feeling motivated. I second the question about how we'll know where the party is. Blue balloons?

I can be there at 11, so maybe special-k and I could stake out some turf for the rest of you lazybones. I kid because I love.

Whaddaya say, -k? Official start time is 11, with stragglers arriving whenever?
posted by Quietgal at 10:45 AM on August 21, 2010

I can't make it up there that early. Earliest I could do is 1ish. So unless you or someone else can get there earlier and stake out a spot, I'd say we set the time for 1 and whoever gets there first can start looking for a spot.

We can update the thread once we settle down and I can also memail people my phone # for latecomers who can't find us. sound good?
posted by special-k at 9:49 AM on August 23, 2010

I could make it earlier, but I also don't want the responsibility of Being Sort Of In Charge because I don't know anyone and would probably find a really bad spot.
posted by madcaptenor at 10:03 AM on August 23, 2010

One o'clock sounds good. If it's crowded, we'll just deal with it.

Recognition devices? Some of us (meaning me) don't have fancy phones that can access the internet, so updating the thread won't help us fossils. Flag, balloon, MeFi T-shirt on a stick?

I can bring a flag from a recumbent bike, one of those little orange triangle jobbies, so maybe you should send me your cell # so I can find you before planting the flag.

I will also bring luscious fresh fruit from the farmer's market, pre-washed for your delectation. Plus paper towels - when I say luscious, I mean luscious.

Hit the button, special-k!

Ok, guys - do we have a plan for finding one another? I'm happy about the flag but Dolores Park is not a tiny place, and given the 18th Street partay, I imagine it will be crowded which may make it tricky to zero in on the group. I don't have a good MeFiGPS suggestion but am wondering if anyone else does?

I'll bring a blue shirt that is quite close to Mefi blueTM and either wear it or put it on a flag pole. That and most people in this thread have my phone # (if not memail me anytime before the meetup).

As soon as we find a spot, we'll get someone with a smartphone to update the thread with the exact location. I'm excited to see y'all tomorrow!
