Beer! Conversation! ...Beer!

Sun April 30 at 6:00 PM, Burnside Brewing Co.
701 E Burnside St, Portland, OR, USA (Map & Directions)
Because (a) we haven't had a pub meetup in a while, along with (b) my own rather sequestered circumstances and (c) general consternation over the state of the nation, I could really use a restorative or three and some amiable palaver.

Beer! I think we should do it at a place, at some time on a given day.

Since you missed the Wurst Haus/Occidental meetup due to a big storm/power outage last fall, should we go there again?

If ye could find it yer hearts to hold such a gathering on a Sunday eve, we could surely attend.
Mondays work, too.
posted by nickthetourist at 9:14 AM on March 30, 2017

Perhaps this Friday eve?
posted by cnidaria at 9:16 AM on March 30, 2017

Or... I momentarily forgot that many places are packed at that time. Something to consider, anyway.

I'd love to come. I work at 6am, so I have a hard time making Mon-Thurs nights, unless we meet at 3 or 4pm. Sunday could work if it's not too late in the eve. 5pm?

I'd be fine with a Sunday late afternoon/evening. Weekdays are harder for me since I'm a 9-to-5-er; 6:30 or 7 is realistically the earliest I could be anywhere. Jeezy Pete, the rush hour traffic around here!! I continue to be grateful I work from home.

Unless we all come to a consensus pretty quick, this weekend might be too soon (but if we do that's fine with me). Otherwise, all my April weekends are free at the moment.

Should we shoot for a central location? North? West? South? I like places with a varied beer menu - and to be honest, I found Wurst Haus' selection pretty limited.

I suspect HUB/Hopworks on Powell might be a bit far for some folks, but it has the advantage of a decent beer selection and large amount of seating.

I am out of town April 8th-9th and 13th-16th. Other weekends in April work for me. Mondays and Wednesdays are a no-go generally -- I have work all day and then night classes at the union hall.

In that case, anyone have a preference between this weekend and the weekends of April 22-23 or 29/30?
posted by Greg_Ace at 12:31 PM on March 30, 2017

I keep missing meetups for various reasons like being sick and having to work, and I'd love to make it to one. I can't really do weeknights, I'm out of town the weekend of the 8th, and the 16th and 23rd are both bad, but beyond that, I hope I can make other weekend times. And if I don't catch this one, I'll try again next time around.
posted by Caduceus at 4:05 PM on March 30, 2017

That sounds like Sunday the 30th would work?
posted by janell at 5:59 PM on March 30, 2017

We can do this weekend or the 22/23 for sure.
posted by Sibrax at 6:06 PM on March 30, 2017

I think I could do April 23rd or possibly April 29th? Also, I like the HUB location on Powell enough that I don't mind that it's a little bit of a drive. I've been to at least one meetup there before, and it worked pretty well from what I can remember.
posted by Secretariat at 10:26 PM on March 30, 2017

It's looking like Sunday the 23rd may be the day. But for the sake of Caduceus, one last check before ruling it out: does April 30 NOT work for anyone?

Much as I like the HUB's food and beer variety, I recall it being noisy both times we've been there, mostly due to little screaming banshees who weren't being properly supervised by their parents. I'm not dead set against going to HUB, but that's something we'd need to be prepared to cope with.

I would love to come and am very much pro-bars-without-kids but will gladly go wherever folks decide!
posted by masquesoporfavor at 3:38 PM on March 31, 2017

I may have blotted out some of the more annoying parts of previous HUB Powell experiences and focused on the glass of soft pretzels and the Velvet ESB. Other venues are good too!

Evening of the 23rd should be good for us. After our first Magic the Gathering prerelease weekend I'll need a drink.
posted by nickthetourist at 12:49 AM on April 2, 2017

We do have a great taproom out here in Hillsboro: McNally's Taproom
Along with a rotating tap list, they also have a variety of bottles.
And it's basically on the MAX line.
posted by nickthetourist at 10:41 AM on April 2, 2017

I can't do the 29th and would prefer the 30th over the 23rd.
posted by janell at 4:21 PM on April 2, 2017

I guess we need to take a vote, then: Sunday the 30th or Sunday the 23rd?

And does anyone have any thoughts regarding McNally's Taproom? Other suggestions?
posted by Greg_Ace at 5:40 PM on April 2, 2017

Either the 23rd or 30th should be fine for us.
posted by nickthetourist at 9:29 PM on April 3, 2017

Any day works for me. I probably wouldn't make it to Hillsboro though - I try to walk or use transit when there's beer involved and it looks like an hour on the bus. I don't want to be a special snowflake though, so I can always make the next one.

Sunday the 30th!

Just to cross-post more locations (ignore if more locations complicates things!) since I just made up a list for this other portland meetup:

Rogue Eastside Pub and Pilot Brewery (previously The Green Dragon, where we've had many meetups- I haven't been here since the recent name change)
Lucky Lab (location 1, other locations)
Breakside Brewery
Oldtown Brewing
Ecliptic Brewing
Occidental Brewing who just added a reuben to their menu

I'll add the comment that I don't remember if Ecliptic had a good spot for a large group- they might?
posted by Secretariat at 9:37 AM on April 6, 2017

Wow, Green Dragon -> Rogue pub is getting some bad Yelp reviews for food (the good reviews mainly mention beer). Hmm. Hopefully it's just growing pains; we might want to wait a few months and give them a chance to find their food groove?
posted by Greg_Ace at 11:28 AM on April 6, 2017

Yeah, I wonder. Rogue food is usually pretty good, or at least pretty OK, so while I'm really sad they didn't keep the name, I'm not ready to write the place off. I suspect there are some growing pains, though.
posted by Secretariat at 2:06 PM on April 6, 2017

The Green Dragon is now Rogue Eastside blahbitty blah? That's just not right.

As far as I can tell, nobody has said they couldn't make it on the 30th - is that accurate? If so, let's plan on the 30th.

Now...where? McNally's Taproom as nickthetourist suggested? One from Secretariat's list?

I'll be honest, I haven't been in a mindset lately to make Executive Decisions, so y'all hash it out and I'll confirm the result.
posted by Greg_Ace at 10:04 AM on April 10, 2017

Let's rule out Breakside, since that's the 4/14 meetup. I'm not particularly inclined to head to Hillsboro on a weekend (I do that commute enough) for McNally's.

Counter proposal: Bazi Bierbrasserie. Many beers available (since that's Greg's stated requirement), not all-IPA-all-the-time (my preference), happy hour all day on Sundays (yay), yelp reviews are pretty positive, reservations are a thing if we need that and have 8+ names... The only potential downside is if there is some rowdy sports-watchery, but in late April on a Sunday afternoon? Seems like a risk we can live with. There's nothing on their event calendar for 4/30 yet.

[To be clear, I'm fine with anywhere that doesn't trigger my going-to-work autopilot. Since I'm rejecting one, I thought I'd add one to the pool for consideration.]
posted by janell at 2:31 PM on April 10, 2017

I think that's a great suggestion, haven't been, we can jostle conversationally with the sportos I bet, and I'm excited about this kinda executive decision-making.
posted by cortex at 2:35 PM on April 10, 2017

Bazi's beer list and happy hour fried things look good.

I could go for Bazi Bierbrasserie.

Could we bring this in a little closer to downtown? Nick and I get off at 6pm, so anything that's say, around Hair of the Dog or Ten Barrel would be great. I know Bunk Bar is down there but I've never considered myself cool enough to go in.
posted by fiercekitten at 11:16 PM on April 10, 2017

I just want to throw in that the Green Dragon's recent menu change did not impress my wife or I the last couple of times we've gone. And that was before this name change, that I'm just finding out about here.
posted by Caduceus at 5:04 AM on April 11, 2017

A vote for Bunk Bar. If we're uncool, we'll be uncool together.
posted by Tentacle of Trust at 12:33 PM on April 11, 2017

Pretty limited (and dare I say, hipsterish) draft selection at Bunk.
posted by Greg_Ace at 1:36 PM on April 11, 2017

Yeah, their beer list is pretty small but the Double Mountain Kolch and Anthem Dry Cider are pretty good.
posted by fiercekitten at 8:51 PM on April 11, 2017

Again, this looks like a Sunday meetup so I might be able to go, mental health and life chaos providing. I'm putting myself as a maybe but putting it in my calender.

How about Burnside Brewing at NE Couch and NE 7th?

I'd been curious about Burnside so that might be the thing.
posted by fiercekitten at 10:50 PM on April 15, 2017

Alrighty then, really-o truly-o last chance to say nay to Sunday April 30 at Burnside Brewing....

(and maybe in May or June we can plan a meetup at Bazi Bierbrasserie, which looks pretty interesting)
