Chicago Jaws Viewing Party
posted January 16, 2011 10:21 AM   RSS

So at our last pizza meetup at Ranalli's, it came to my - highly dismayed - attention that several of you people have NEVER SEEN JAWS! That just can't stand. I mean, how can you call yourself a complete soul without having seen Jaws?
So I am proposing a little get-together at our place to watch Jaws. We'll provide the movie, some beer, and will attempt to make miss Kaz's fantastic fish stew (soooooo good). You bring yourself, alcohol, and any muchies/snacks/treats you might like to contribute.

I was thinking in the afternoon (5 pm?) for the movie, and perhaps we could head down to Andersonville afterward for drinks at the Bong/Simons/whatever.

.....and favorite both of the above comments if either works for you equally well.

Honeypie, those are both Saturday dates. Also, Sunday, February 6 is the superbowl. That said I'm in if it is on the 13th. Or either of those Saturdays. But you'll hav to pry me from the superbowl with the jaws o life.

I was looking at my calender wrong. I am also busy Super Bowl Sunday.

Let's just leave the dates and make them Saturdays. SATURDAY the 5th or SATURDAY the 12th.

I have a projector and screen if you want to borrow it.

Oooo, Eamon, maybe! It depends on how it sets up and all that, but that might come in very useful. Thank you!

I can't make it on the 5th but will be there if it ends up being the 12th. What a great idea!
posted by misskaz at 11:47 AM on January 17, 2011

I like the idea. Any of the dates would work.

The rather early start time is good for me as I am coming in from the schluburbs.

This sounds like it would be very fun! I've seen snippits of Jaws but definitely not the whole way through.

My only concern, as ever, is parking. I'm sure if I visited more often than 3-4 times a year I'd get the hang of it, but whatever skills are needed to figure out parking in Chicago are skills I don't seem to possess. But those visits were always on weekdays so maybe on a weekend I'll have better luck.

I feel I should probably warn people as well: we have a decent sized apartment, but we don't have a cornucopia of cushy seating. We only have 1 couch, for example (hey, some people have 2 or a monster L-shaped thing!). So I feel I should warn people that a few of you will have to enjoy our wooden floor. We're going to put down blanket and pillows, but I still feel I should let people know.

I don't know where this is going to be, but if it's not far from my place, I have room in my tandem parking spot, first come first served. I'm also close to the #36, #7, #22, #145/6 North-South buses, #77, #76, #152, East-West buses, and a short walk to the Belmont/Sheffield el stop, if someone wanted to drive to my place and then transit to the meet-up. Which would be convoluted, but an option.

I am going to comment right.... HERE.... so I can keep an eye on this thread. 2/5 is a definite no-go, but 2/12 might be as well, so I'll abstain from voting.

The only thing I potentially have on 2/12 is a "The Room" screening with Tommy Wiseau at The Music Box. But that's not 'till midnight. So bring on the wooden floors, John Williams soundtracks and giant carnivorous fish.

Hey, I'm one of those people who've never seen Jaws! I don't know if I can make it to either date, but I'll keep this in mind.

The last time I sat down to watch a movie with a bunch of mefites there was a lot of chatter. Will this be a somber, dignified viewing worthy of a cinesthete such as myself, or will we be doing our best Joel/Mike impressions?

This is a valid question, as Jaws is a pretty great film but it's also not, like, Fanny and Alexander or something and it isn't hard to imagine it turning into MST3K (remember the time Gypsy was in the theater?! Oh jesus). I think we ought to be quiet so's the folks who haven't seen it can be properly terrified, but what do I know.
posted by shakespeherian at 8:43 PM on January 18, 2011

Were people terrified by Jaws? I'm old enough to have seen it at the drive-in and I don't remember it being at all scary. Of course, maybe I was just too little to get it. I may have fallen asleep, actually. I thought Duel was much scarier.

gosh, I was just about to launch into a "back when I was a kid . . . " lecture, but you know, back when I was a kid, movies stayed in theatres for years. Cause that was the only way to make money off people who missed them the first time around. Thank god for the Brew & View, and the Music Box and all those places that show movies older than last week.

I guess monster movies just don't scare me, but I LOVED the Host.

Jaws freaked me out pretty well. I don't like swimming in the ocean.

As for if it's a serious viewing or not, well, that's up to you guys. I don't think it'll be quiet enough to hear a pin drop, but I don't think it'll be talked over, either. But how truly quiet can it ever be when more than 3 or 4 people get together to watch a movie?

Also, guys, keep in mind we don't have a large TV. It's just an old-school one. 25 inch? I have no idea. I'll see if Eamon's screen will work, but unless it comes with a stand, I have no idea (Eamon, how does it work?).

Oooh, double feature.
posted by shakespeherian at 6:55 AM on January 19, 2011

I have never seen the Host, and I think it's unlikely that the movie will remain quiet, especially if there is alcohol involved, and really, you know there will be.
posted by adamdschneider at 8:42 AM on January 19, 2011

Yes, I can bring a screen and stand as well. Looks like I can't do the 12th anymore, though: Kay and I are probably headed to Belles & Whistles over at the Mayne Stage that night.

Eamon, if it ends up on the 12th and you can't make it, may I still borrow the screen? I KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE

I know this kinda has been left hanging - I was assuming we'd have it this weekend, but over this past weekend I found out a friend of mine died. His death occurred in Thailand, where he was teaching English, and it's been up in the air when the funeral would be as his family has had to fly there to bring his body back. It is really looking like Sunday will be the day. So I'm afraid we'll have to try and do this again some other time. Sorry, guys.

Um, so, I know this isn't the right place for it, but this is the most recent thread we've got so...

Shakes disabled his account.

Anyone got an IRL means of contacting him, or know what's up? I just want to make sure everything's okay.
