Desperately seeking San Francisco Mefites

Sat November 13 at 5:30 PM, Pi Bar
1432 Valencia St, San Francisco, CA, USA (Map & Directions)
East coast academic, transplanted to the mid-south, seeks Bay area internet nerds for an evening of meetup fun. I will be in SF November 13-16 for the National Communication Association convention and I would love to meet some new Mefites!
I am staying at the Hilton San Francisco Union Square (the conference hotel) and I won't have a car, so anything that's walkable or public transportation-able is necessary.

I am free in the evenings on Nov. 13, 15, and 16, so I'm open to whichever of those days will be the most convenient.

Any takers?

I'd be up for this, preferably on Saturday (the 13th). Someone else should propose a venue, though.

Meetup!

The 15th doesn't work for me (won't work for gingerbeer, either, as she'll be out of town). 13th or 16th both work.

The 13th is probably the better of the 3 days for me, too. Anybody have any venue ideas?

Union Square Hilton isn't far too from the Yerba Buena center. How about something over there? Jillians has pool tables and drinks, though it's kind of yuppie-ish? There's also Samovar, the tea place. Not to forget Yerba Buena bowling and ice skating.

I like the 13th, & I'll give venues some thought.

Doublewhiskeycokenoice and I would be late for a 13th meetup (9-10), but I'm free the 14th.

And the 16th is the Castle Quiz 8:30. Team Metafilter?
posted by politikitty at 1:12 PM on November 8, 2010

Possibly going: me, kaiserin, and visiting dignitaries mandymanwasregistered and speicus. I just moved here in August, and have been looking forward to meeting some MeFites!
posted by the_bone at 6:38 PM on November 8, 2010

That is, we'll go if the shindig is on Saturday (or possibly Friday night, though mandyman and speicus won't get to Oakland until that evening). Super-duper extra points if the meetup location is accessible via BART.
posted by the_bone at 6:41 PM on November 8, 2010

D'oh, I will just be getting back into town sometime on the 13th, so I am a definite maybe?

BUT I would be totally into some pub quiz Team Metafilter. Either next week or some future week!

I have an official department function on the 14th, so that won't work. Looks like the 13th is the emerging consensus. So where shall we go?

The one and only other time I was in SF was in 1995, and my only memory is of driving around the city and hoping against hope that gravity was going to continue to work. Needless to say, I didn't soak in a lot of the scenery!

I'm afraid mostlymartha and I are gonna be out of town that weekend. Hope you guys have fun though.

How about Pi Bar on Valencia and 25th at 3:14 on Saturday?

I must say I like the idea of a bar with a manifesto.

I have a surprise birthday party to go to, but I am not yet sure what time. If it wraps up soon enough, I'll try to pop over!

Pi Bar looks very cool. It is accessible by BART, right? Alas, I'll be stuck in a very boring meeting until 4:30ish, but any time after that would work.

NCA FTW!

I would like to come, but I have a toddler in tow. Hoping that I can make it happen.

DiscourseMarker: Pi Bar is (according to Google Maps) a five-minute walk from the 24th Street BART station.

speicus and I are up for it if it's more of a nighttime thing than a daytime thing.

Ok, so how about Pi Bar on Saturday the 13th. Time? 6? 7?
posted by DiscourseMarker at 7:44 AM on November 11, 2010

Earlier's probably better if we're going to invade them on a Saturday evening, so 6?

@Mandyman are you guys gonna be in SF?
posted by k8t at 9:14 AM on November 11, 2010

If people are into the Pi Bar idea someone might want to give them a ring and see if they can accommodate a party of uncertain size at that time. I know they have a long table/bar thing in the front window but the rest of the seating is two-tops or four-tops along another wall. And then there's seating at the bar proper, as well.

I've been here once with a couple of friends around 6pm on a Friday night -- and we scooped up the last table. I have no idea what Saturday's are like -- we might want to have a back-up plan in case it's nuts. I'm having a hard time thinking of a good place that can accommodate a group on a Saturday night...

k8t--we're staying in Oakland for the weekend, but will be in SF on Saturday afternoon to meetup with some other MI peeps.

No way! I am there for the conference that DiscourseMarker mentioned above. Would be fantastic to see you two. (Might be the last time in CA!)

I may be able to make this -- I've got another event to go at Pandora's Karaoke later in the night. Someone finalize the location?
posted by benzenedream at 6:57 PM on November 11, 2010

As a non-local, I defer to the better judgment of the locals. Can someone in town find out if Pi Bar will work, or suggest an alternative?
posted by DiscourseMarker at 8:04 PM on November 11, 2010

Um, so I just noticed you are all planning to have a meet up ridiculously close by and that mandyman might come. Tungsten!

By which of course I mean that I will make every effort to be there.
posted by cali at 11:59 PM on November 11, 2010

Another suggestion: Whiskey Thieves, but it's more a drinks-only place without food, and is in a mildly sketchy Tenderloin locale. I'd pick Edinburgh Castle over Pi Bar, unless you've got other plans in the Mission. We'll have to get somewhere relatively early to get space on a Saturday night/afternoon.
posted by benzenedream at 12:56 AM on November 12, 2010

If it doesn't feel too last-minute, I'm happy to call Pi Bar today when they open to see what would happen if we show up around 6 on Saturday with an unknown number of people.

I'm also delighted to show up at the Castle, although I'd have to take a bus (!!) to get there instead of walking, which Pi Bar is close enough for me to do. And that is some fine not-enough-coffee-yet syntax right there.
posted by rtha at 6:00 AM on November 12, 2010

rtha, if you do, talk to Jen, I chatted with her last night and gave her a tentative warning that some folks might be by in a group Sat night. Use my real name (Risa) or description (pink hair currently) so she'll know what you're talking about.

Pi bar has a great beer selection and great pizza. Not that I eat pizza that often, as I'm lactose intolerant. But I can recommend a slice with bacon and onions.

I heart Whiskey Thieves, am a fan of Edinburgh Castle.
posted by superquail at 10:04 AM on November 12, 2010

So...would it be easier to find tables for an unknown number of people at Edinburgh Castle at 6ish on Saturday? From the map it looks like it's walkable from my hotel, so that's a plus I guess.

So would the Castle be better? I suppose we need to decide so I can confirm or whatever we do now in IRL.
posted by DiscourseMarker at 10:26 AM on November 12, 2010

mollymahem, cool, thanks!

The Castle has two large-ish tables that can seat eight or so, or a few more if we squeeze in. Though it's not likely to be packed at 6, the main problem is that the rest of the seating is all (small) booths, which makes it difficult to add people.

We are notorious ditherers, DiscourseMarker, so please don't take any of this personally!

I'm gonna go ahead and vote for Pi Bar, since it sounds like it might be easier to accommodate a group where we need to add tables/chairs. If it's completely and utterly jammed, well, it's a short walk to a bunch of other possibilities (including the place we're going to tonight for dinner, probably: B3 ).

If anyone who doesn't already have my cell phone number wants it, memail me.

I'll show myself out

If we're voting, I vote for Pi Bar, because I like pizza, and because I like pi.
posted by madcaptenor at 11:54 AM on November 12, 2010

Ok, well, I do love pizza, so...rtha, can you call Pi Bar and see if they think we will be able to manage? Is 6 still ok, or do we want to go a little earlier, like 5:30?

where's the radio button? (on my phone)

Click the x attending, y maybe (currently it is 6 attending, 4 maybe) right below the map. Then at the bottom of that page you will see the radio buttons.

It is awesome, special-k. Although the Pi Bar guy I talked to yesterday (mollymahem's contact wasn't available) said that seating a group of unknown size around 5:30 shouldn't be a problem, if it's too crowded we can always stroll the few blocks to B3 and hang there. In addition to delicious burgers, they have Goose Island Bourbon County Stout, which is delicious beyond imagining. It should be on our list for future meetups. (Also, what is this nonsense with you "maybe" attending? Please.)

re: Frjtz: we had what seemed like a thousand meetups in a row there, and there was finally a rebellion, and now we joke about it. Space-wise, it's pretty perfect, especially if we can get the table in the back, and they have fries and stuff available for eating. The main downside for me about them is I don't like any of the beers they have!
