I'd like to hold a meetup at Corners Tavern in Walnut Creek. This is an upscale, "swanky" venue, but also whimsical with a sense of humor, and only semi-formal, as I see it. It's situated in Broadway Plaza near Macy's and is easy to find. About 20-30 minute walk from BART, depending on what lights you get. What say you?

This Vimeo video shows the restaurant interior and is pretty good if you want to get a sense of the place, and determine if you would like to attend this meetup.
It has fabuloso decorating and atmosphere - really nice, but not too formal - and there's fun dioramas in the bar section of the restaurant. We could aim for the Happy Hour menu as that is more budget-friendly. Or not!
It is a bit pricier and I wouldn't want anyone to feel they cannot attend because of their budget. Maybe we can brainstorm on this if there is a need?

There's a free shuttle to downtown from the WC BART station, if it is of use.

Swanky restaurants are my kryptonite! I'm not sure I'll order anything more than a drink to save money, unless we go at a "proper" dinner hour....It's definitely awkward at a formal sit-down place when only one person is all NOPE, JUST MORE OF YOUR DELICIOUS TAP WATER, PLEASE. But I really love how often you Walnut Creek denizens meet up, so I'm interested.
For those of you west of the Caldecott -- would anyone like to meet at a Bart station? Say, MacArthur? I can fit three more in my car, four if y'all want to get friendly!

Last time I had a burger there it was fantastic but I wasn't hungry enough for it, we could easily split. (Again, this is sounding a bit cheap when I type this out... ) They gave me a big scary looking sharp knife and I cut it in half to take a photo of it, and it split very easily, I was surprised...
Other ideas: we all chip in a bit extra to "sub" you. Um.. I'm out of ideas. Halp, people.
Also: if you don't see an IRL event that's for you, definitely organize something in Oakland, where you live, that you know and like, and is affordable. Like, you could set something up or some other Oakland resident and Mefite can.

Aww, you guys really don't have to chip in for me! In fact, I'm babysitting for a friend right now, and she's paying me really generously. Or maybe not, I haven't babysat since 1999. I've earmarked this extra cash for meetup fun!

(actually it's unclear whether happy hour menu -- or at least the happy hour price -- is weekdays only; I think the "in between hours" menu we got on a mid-afternoon weekend was a little bit pricier.)

I could make it on Sunday March 8th but I'd probably get there no earlier than 4:30 since I have band practice till 3 and I'd be taking BART. Since this is Walnut Creek I am assuming the meetup won't be running very late :)

I was going to try and make reservations this time, since Pyramid surprised me by asking if we had reservations at one of the previous MetaFilter Meetups.

I've just used Open Table (first time ever) at the restaurant's website. I had to change the start time to 2:30 pm since they didn't have other options, apparently, and I had to change the number to 12, because 13 was over capacity for their Open Table reservation system. Apparently.
So I'm guessing a few people might've said they'll come and they won't, and we'll be okay.
mudpuppie: the place is a bit swanky, that's all I meant. Like, just put on a clean pressed shirt and nice pants or whatnot, you'll be fine. We were there for lunch one day and I saw a guy come in with a baby dressed in shorts and flip-flops... so YMMV. I'm sure you'll be fine!

1) Corners Tavern has rung me on the landline. Yep, I use one of those. They have set us up in the private room, as no one has rented it today. They put signage up, and we get special logo'd menus.
2) I asked again about the Happy Hour menu, and although I was sent this tweet (that I linked to upthread) that indicated they did have Happy Hour, I was told that no, they don't have Happy Hour Menu on Sat/Sun.
Bright side: they do have an in-between menu that has many of the same items (nibbles, and things like their Corners Tavern Burger). She said it was very similar, has desserts too. I think we'll make do.

That was the BEST Walnut Creek event EVER! Really fun - and that private room was something else. I will upload photos when I am more sober later today. Cannot promise they'll be in focus but I think some will turn out okay.
Halifix - I think I "get" why you said dessert was hard work: it's the shape of the glass, right?
missmary6 - I forgot the name of the wallet company, please Memail or state in-thread, thanks! :P

Yeah, I guess now that the pudding was supposed to be mixed up on purpose? In that case the glass makes sense. I treat food like antiques and don't like disturbing other parts of it unless I'm supposed to.
It was very fun; jcifa, thanks for setting it up (and bringing stress man)! Thanks to missmary6 for the ride back, and good luck at work! The conversation on the drive back with bleep was very relaxing.

It was a meetup of literally inedible, unchewable french fries! A hamburger that would not be cut by a mere, insignificant table knife! A dessert that left diners mopping their brows in exhaustion!

I had such a lovely time with y'all! jcifa -- my wallet is from Hobo -- prepare to want every single wallet they offer -- they are so scrumptious.
