Walnut Creek, CA meetup: Pinky's Pizza

Sun December 7 at 3:30 PM, Pinky's Pizza Parlor
2085 North Broadway, Walnut Creek, CA, USA (Map & Directions)
A meetup in the leafy suburbs of the East Bay: Walnut Creek. Venue: Pinky's Pizza. Good beer in bottles and on tap, and decent pizza. Also: Addams Family pinball machine.
Proposed meetup that is within walking distance for me so I can drink and walk home safely. I'd like to meet those who want to meet me!

My husband and fellow Mefite, We had a deal, Kyle, may or may not be attending but I suspect beer will get him there - and the convenience. These two factors also greatly contribute to my own attendance.

There is also "world-class shopping" in Walnut Creek (as realtors are fond of saying), so you could make a day of it: shop during some of the day, and meet-up in the evening.

This is a good, local establishment that I wish to support. BATHROOMS ARE CLEAN. Nice staff. You can view the menu here:

Let's talk dates / times. I prefer an earlier meetup, say, from 5 or 6 pm (flexible here, though).

(Just looked at their menu and there are deals for beer on Tuesdays and Thursdays, fyi.)

Hi neighbor! I've never attended a MeFi meetup before, but I'd love to attend one so close to me. I prefer weekends or earlier evenings (I'm very much not a night person) - 5 or even earlier. What days were you thinking of?

I'd be driving in from WC near the Concord border. I see Pinky's is right near my cats' vet so I have a pretty good idea how to get there.

Well of course I'm in. Weekends much better for me as I work 40 miles away and skew my commute late/late , but could rearrange a work day if necessary.

Easily walkable from WC BART, FWIW: Google says 0.6 mile/12 minutes which seems about right to me.

Okay let's aim for Saturday or Sunday, then. We could start at 3:30 pm if earlier is better.

Thanksgiving is just around the corner, so I propose one of the following dates:

- 6 December (Saturday)
- 7 December (Sunday) (Nat'l Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day)
- 13 December (Saturday)
- 14 December (Sunday)

After that it gets too close the Xmas IMHO. So there are four dates to play with, which ones are good?

DON'T BE SHY! :D

The 7th would be great! 14th is next best, then the 13th.

Ok, let's say 7th December (Sunday) so we're not dithering about.

MAKE IT SO, MR RIKER. 🎉 🍻

I've set it to begin at 3:30 pm but obviously in the middle-class way it would be fine to turn up at 4:00 pm.

December 7 at 3:30 it is! Thank you for starting it early - I'm a decided morning lark. Looking forward to meeting fellow Walnut Creekers and nearby!

Weird, I didn't get an alert for this. Now that I live here I want to go to ALL the meet ups and be friends with ALL of you who want to be friends with me

Unfortunately I work on Sundays until 7:30, so I won't be able to attend. Have fun!

Oh goddammit. Mr. psho and I will be in the UK by then. Booo!

We do love Pinky's as well (especially the sandwiches and the tanachos).

Say hello to Dan and Butch for us!

Rosie M. Banks: whenever we walk by that vet, my husband and I always say "get well soon, cattas!"

My birthday is December 8, and I'm one of the few Contra Costa mefites, so yeah, I'll be there!

Have a great time in the UK psho! Sorry I won't meet you I was kinda curious having seen your name in my profile for so long... Noms_Tiem sorry you cannot make it either.

Very happy to see other attendees and "maybes" - wintersweet, bleep, asterix, BrotherCaine.

I want to emphasize this is just a casual thing - this isn't the Algonquin Round Table, if you turn up, drink your beer and stare off into space that's fine!

I neglected to mention there is a quarters machine that takes dollars if you need money for the games (there is at least one sit-down style arcade game - I did not note what it was, though.)

Mr. psho is most annoyed that they removed his favorite arcade machine -- I can't remember if it was golf-related or racing-related, but he liked it a lot.

Damn, I'm actually *in* Walnut Creek, but we may be in LA that weekend for a friend's engagement party. If we're in town, we'll totally come by.

Oh that's a shame! I'd love to meet up. Have a good time at the wedding if you go there - or if you turn up that's great too.

There will hopefully be a "MetaFilter" branded small paper sign at a table, and a "fidget bucket". Okay, I nixed the fidget bucket but I am bringing a couple of things to play with if you need to fidget whilst socializing. (Like me. I usually play with the straw wrapper.)

Heads-up on Walnut Creek shopping: there is a plastic ban bag ordinance in force in our city. It's a bit confusing because at some places they still have bags (Uniqlo) while at others they will charge you 10 cents or so for a paper or reusable bag (Target, Cost Plus, Container Store, etc.). Here is more info.

So bring your own shopping bag, messenger bag, backpack or whatever if you don't want to pay the small fee.

Pizza and Metafilter are two of my favorite things. I might stop by!

I'll be getting back from a trip to Japan on Saturday afternoon. I'll see how I feel but this might be just what I need to stay awake all afternoon on Sunday!

Okay this is still on, of course.

I don't have a mobile device so cannot communicate from within the pizza place, in real time, FYI.

Hope you stop by - you can just swing by for a drink or whatevs, leave when you feel like it. Very low-key. I shall be having pizza though! Gotta line the stomach. ;)

It's not a very big place but there are sort of two sections for diners: one is adjacent to the bar (around the corner as you walk in the main entrance), the other is the main dining area that is more brightly lit, right by where you place your pizza order. I tend to like the bit by the bar but we'll take what we can get. So if you don't see a "MetaFilter" table immediately, just keep walking around the joint, you'll find us. :)

Oh ya it would be helpful if there could be something to look for? Otherwise I'll wander around briefly, get super nervous and go home. (Ask me how I know.)
posted by bleep at 5:29 PM on December 5, 2014

bleep, I know the feeling. If you want my cell number, memail me--then at least we can wander as a cluster.
posted by wintersweet at 6:53 PM on December 5, 2014

Look out for a Blue Metafilter logo, on the table and/or tacked to the wall above it. We can all be awkward together.

(joseph conrad had me fire up the color printer at work. It's odd how hard it is to find MeFi logos online; of course Matt's not really the type to have an online press pack of such things.)

(Yeah, I think it would be helpful to have an official Mefi Meetup kit, with logo'd table cards - pdfs or what have you - that you can print out at home. Might help with missed connections.)

Thanks, guys, I had a good time!

Look for that Oakley meetup in January or March or something.

Good meetup, hope to see you all again. Much beer and good conversation, in between the football enthusiasm.

Was interested to learn that the Addams Family pinball game board was tilted a bit less to make it a slightly easier play, and that the board needed cleaning, which affects gameplay. Also - I never read that lower-left hand corner piece of paper with rules/instructions - but some people do.

Dang - this is what I get for not adding a comment to the thread early on: I forgot about this! Looks like it was fun and I'm sorry we missed it. (My sidebar filling up with local mefites adding each other as contacts made me go hey waitaminute....)

It was so nice meeting you all, I look forward to the next time we can get together in the East Bay. bonus incentive: The TCP-IPA I was running home to is now bottled, and should be ready to share & drink in a couple of weeks.
